Sonny?

Honest opinion on Sonny? It's either that or George and I'm just feeling that George is too popular. But Sonny was suggested by my DH (who's a boxing fan) and I much admit its growing on me. But is it solid enough for a boys name? X

I love it, it was on our list, I know two, one age three and the other age two.

BigBongTheory · 05/05/2013 21:19

How funny. I know someone else who couldn't decide between the two.

I don't really 'get' it as a name. Is it after the sun, is it a form of junior?
I think it seems too much like an adjective to me and not a man's name, just a child's.

It has a nice sound to it though.

diamondsneezer · 05/05/2013 21:20

I love it too. I know one who is 4. I also know a Solly which I love too.

Would you consider it as a nickname? For perhaps Solomon? (I love Solomon)

steppemum · 05/05/2013 21:28

really really don't like it, not even indifferent, I think it is awful.
Imagine a grown man called Sonny??

Sorry, you did ask for honesty

ElBombero · 05/05/2013 21:44

No I like honesty!! TBH the only people we know is a friend of my dads who in his 50s called Sonny. And a boxer from why back... Good response, thanks x

I love it. Apparently my friends do too - I know 5 aged between 0 and 4!

(And I certainly could imagine calling a grown man Sonny, for what it's worth Smile).

jkklpu · 05/05/2013 21:48

awful - sounds as though a child's parents couldn't be bothered to think up a name

Suzietwo · 05/05/2013 21:48

I don't hate it but I do think I'd go 'urgh' if I heard a friend had called their child it

ElBombero · 05/05/2013 21:49

Oh and meaning is from old Greek origin meaning Wisdom

I know a Sonny. He's 6/7. It really suits him.

SoulTrain · 05/05/2013 21:52

Meh.

George is excellent.

forgetmenots · 05/05/2013 23:16

Sounds too nicknamey for my own taste tbh, but I know a few of different ages and they all wear it well! Love George too, though

raisah · 06/05/2013 06:29

Fine for a boy as a nn but not as a proper name for a man. It doesnt pass the high court judge test for me.

seeker · 06/05/2013 06:35

I always imagine what it would be like to be a young supervisor trying to manage a group of people older than him and being called Sonny.

Remember you are naming a man, not a little boy.

munchkinmaster · 06/05/2013 06:40

Nope

Thingymajigs · 06/05/2013 06:55

I love it. Its on our top 5 list. Its growing in popularity so won't be as unusual as people here are making it out to be.

Sleepyfergus · 06/05/2013 06:55

.....and Cher?!

No. I'm not a fan of the name Sonny. It sounds v babyish and as pp have said, not a name for a grown man.

I do like George though. It's popular for good reason! But in actual fact, it's not that common where I live (Edinburgh).

badtime · 06/05/2013 11:41

I really dislike the name Sonny. I can't see it as a name.

ItsYonliMe · 06/05/2013 12:12

Not often I really dislike names - but I don't like Sonny. Feel I'd have to say in in an American accent.

ItsYonliMe · 06/05/2013 12:12

George is cute though.

TigOldBitties · 06/05/2013 12:47

I love it, George is boring.

I know a Sonny of 18 months and then one of around 30. Suits both of them.

Only thing I would say is (older Sonny) is on DH's football team and whenever the shouts of "Go On Son" start, as they always do with football, he normally jokes that he's trying his best but can't do everything. Obviously they aren't all for him but it does sound like they are. So I imagine whenever you say sentences involving My Son, Sonny... it will sound a bit weird.

RunnerHasbeen · 06/05/2013 12:55

Grayson? Sonny is cute on a wee boy and Gray is quite nice on an adult.

gillywillywoo · 06/05/2013 12:59

Not a fan... Had a Sonny in my year at school and he was the biggest most spoilt little prick ever... So that's kind of put me off.

That aside, I just think George is so much nicer.
