What names would you choose?

I think mine would by Ayla for a girl (from the earth children series) and Harry for a boy (from Harry Potter Blush)

Will from The Dark is Rising

purpleloosestrife · 13/08/2012 18:46

Yossarian or Atticus for a boy.

My DD's middle name is Storm after a character from a book DH had read years and years ago.

I liked the name (but not particularly the character, which is not what OP asked but what the hell!) Mercedes from Shakespeare - but would never use this is RL!!

I was a bit pony mad as a child so my DC could have been called Black Beauty, Flicker and Brumby !!

scentednappyhag · 13/08/2012 18:49

Johnny- House of Leaves
Thursday- The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fford
Lincoln- The Jeffrey Deaver novels

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 13/08/2012 18:54

Scout, Jem and Atticus, all from o Kill a Mockingbird.

SurprisinglyCurvaciousPirate · 13/08/2012 19:01

DD is named after the famous Miss Lizzy Bennet. Grin

DS is named after the not quite so famous lead male character from 80's teen movie sixteen candles... Blush

I was hoping to find Emily of New Moon for my kindle but its not there:(

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 13/08/2012 19:34

greylady, go to www.gutenberg.net.au, click on Free Ebooks, then go to authors beginning with M. You'll find all the Emily books under Montgomery, plus a few other more obscure titles which I didn't even know existed until I found this site. If you copy the text into Word, Notepad or other format and email it to your Kindle, your Kindle will automatically transcribe it into readable format. Et voila!

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 13/08/2012 19:44

Also, while I think of it, www.gutenberg.org has the rest of the Anne books, plus some other rare LM Montgomery books. I discovered these two sites when I was a very bored temp and was promptly enthralled. They also have some Angela Brazil and all classics - anything out of copyright, basically, depending on what has been transcribed and uploaded. I wiled away many a happy hour reading lots of Wilkie Collins and Frances Hodgson Burnett as well.

MeUp · 13/08/2012 20:17

I would chose Orion or Sheldon - both characters from Pandoras Star by Peter Hamilton.

Astr0naut · 13/08/2012 20:21

WEll, she's actually a Josephine, but I'm sure her tomboy years will be Jo (like I longed to be George from Famous five).

She's got a fair bit of hair for a 9 month old. If she's like her brother, she will have a mane. Envy

dementedma · 13/08/2012 20:25

For those with an Emily, the first book we ever bought dc1 was called 'Emily's letters to james,'. Its lovely.

theTramp · 13/08/2012 20:33

Astro - I think we had similar tastes. Did Daryl in Mallory towers also make your fave list?

MrM and I are talking names at the mo. Weirdly some improve with familiarity and others really don't. I have two fave boy and two fave girl names, which I fully expect to change as time goes on, however we're not at all in synch with either. With one exception, I am bringing MrM around to Inigo as a (boys)name. Which would be awesome. Of course a fairly ordinary middle name would be required to balance it out, just in case.

UniPsychle · 13/08/2012 20:47

I have an Atticus (well as a second name anyway, wasn't quite brave enough for a first.) If he had been a she, it would've been Merrial (Merri for short) after a character from a Ken McCloud novel.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 13/08/2012 20:59

issynoko i have laughed very loudly! Those are great names, i really love Heffalump.

posypoo · 13/08/2012 21:02

I did - Catherine (Wuthering Heights). Sadly though, Anne of Green Gables doesn't like how it's spelt. How am I going to deal with that one?

Frikadellen · 13/08/2012 21:05

Ayla was on my list but dh vetoed

dh got his one though with Phoebe (the Catcher in the Rye)

For boys there wouldnt be a name laughs

WyrdMother · 13/08/2012 21:13

Esmerelda (Esme) for Granny Weatherwax Doyenne of Witches and Samuel (Sam) for His Grace, His Excellency, The Duke of Ankh; Commander Sir Samuel Vimes.

Both names had already been taken by pets in our extended family sadly, luckily they were only one entry each on a fairly long list.

Whatiswitnit · 13/08/2012 21:21

Not a baby name, but I'd love a cat called Richard Parker.
I did have a cat called Peggotty, named after the character in David Copperfield (or is it Nicholas Nickleby?)

I used to love the name Regan after reading The Exorcist. Couldn't bring myself to use it, however. Also Carlotta, Gwendoline, Darrell, Mary-Lou, Zerelda - all from Enid Blyton books. I thought they were very exotic or pretty. All seem naff now.

What I like now:

Pip (Great Expectations) but my surname starts with P.
Luna (Luna Lovegood - HP)
Aibeleen (The Help). What a beautiful name.

WantAnOrange · 13/08/2012 21:29

I love the name Pip!

DS name, Caleb, did come from a book. It's in the Rriftwar Saga by Raymond E Fiest. He's not named after the character as such, we just saw it in there and liked it.

I know an Atticus and think it's a very cool name.

thisonehasalittlecar · 13/08/2012 21:32

Ignatius from A Confederacy of Dunces. sausage I think Jennet is a great name too but aside from the howling ghost issue I think it would get terminally misheard as Janet.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 13/08/2012 21:37

kahlan, Terry Goodkind. It's Pronounced Kay Lin.

Dd was always going to be Katy Scarlet. DP put the mockers on that by insisting she be Victoria or Elizabeth.
I had to compromise and she was Catherine Victoria. I've always regretted that. She is so Katy Scarlet!
Gone With The Wind is a big favourite. I live most of the names. India is one of my top, and Ashleigh and Beau for a boy.

CommaChameleon · 13/08/2012 21:41

If I were to name them after my favourite characters, rather than using names that I prefer or like better but from characters I don't like as much then I would have:

Lenore - after Lenore Doolan from Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris, Including Books, Street Fashion, and Jewelry by Leanne Shapton.

Leah and Dinah - from the Bible yes, but I got them from The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.

Jerusha - after Jerusha Abbott (also known as Judy) in Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webb.

Hope - after Hope Clearwater from Brazzaville Beach by William Boyd.

Stu - after Stu Redman from The Stand by Stephen King.

Roland and Eddie - from The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.

Matthew - after Matthew Emerson from The Clock Winder by Anne Tyler.

jai38 · 14/08/2012 07:45

I have a dd named from the borrowers - a favourite childhood story. Also Lyra is a popular brand of excellent colouring pencils in Germany and i can never get past that

choceyes · 14/08/2012 09:17

I already have. My DS is called Atticus. Always wanted to use the name since I read TKAMB and I'm glad I was brave enough to use it as a first name (was thinking of it as a second name as I felt it was too out there at first - but i went with my instinct in the end) Always have had great reactions to his name from everybody and never have regretted it for a second!
