What names would you choose?

I think mine would by Ayla for a girl (from the earth children series) and Harry for a boy (from Harry Potter Blush)

Some fabulous names here. I love Ged (Earthsea - beats HP off the globe), Lyra and I always liked Charlotte from C's web. I'm sure there's more ... Atticus obviously and Finn (Finn McCool - Irish Giant).

Oh and Wart from one of the Arthur books (TH White)

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 12/08/2012 22:04

I had a cousin called Heathcliffe.

I love the name Sirius! The from Harry Potter part makes it a no...

BonzoDooDah · 12/08/2012 22:04

Ribena - Heathcliffe really? HE was an UTTER git!
(and wasn't Rebecca too?)

RibenaHasLeftTheBuilding · 12/08/2012 22:09

They are still my favourite characters. I didn't claim they were nice people Grin. I am never sure about Rebecca though - it's all come second hand from the husband and he does rather have motive for painting a nasty picture...

BonzoDooDah · 12/08/2012 22:17

True enough Ribena. She (DuMaurier) should have written a *leave the bastard" book in response.

RibenaHasLeftTheBuilding · 12/08/2012 22:22

I am actually about to read 'Rebecca's Tale' - which I think her estate sanctioned (not sure about that)- which is intended to be her side of the story.

NellyBluth · 12/08/2012 22:29

According to DP - Jimmy the Hand, Paul Muad'Dib and Kruppe.

Fortunately DP is not in charge of naming the DCs.

ScrambledSmegs · 12/08/2012 22:30

Atticus or Titus (Gormenghast trilogy) for a boy. Sadly, although his character is far more memorable, Steerpike is not a name I would suggest! From children's books, Chrestomanci.

Girls more tricky - favourite would obviously be Scout, but I suppose Anne (of Green Gables) or Esme (Weatherwax, Discworld) are in the running too.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 12/08/2012 22:47

I did this.

My eldest dd is named after the second Miss Bennett.

I read it at a young age. I think she (the character, obviously) was my first girl crush.

thewhistler · 12/08/2012 22:49

Ooh Fabrice..

I've always assumed Titty's name was Letitia, which I do like.

Love Dorothea, as it was my adored granny's name , though I find her irritating.

Sally, both from Enid Blyton ( I much preferred both her and her name to the androgynous Darrell) and a wonderful 1950s book called Sally's Family published by the Seagull Library.

Nicola, from the Marlowes.

Jessica and Portia from the Merchant of Venice.

But we only had a Ds.

quirrelquarrel · 12/08/2012 23:14

Hedda from The Children's Book (too uncultured to have read Ibsen).

Joey, Chiara or Gisela from the Chalet School

Asher from Asher Lev, Chaim Potok

Djuna....Anais Nin....well, I like the name Jorma most, it's so bold.

I had a hamster whose middle name Blush was Raskolnikov. Height of 15 year old ponciness.

quirrelquarrel · 12/08/2012 23:15

Oh yeah, forgot about Scout!

Plus Tadzio :)

quirrelquarrel · 12/08/2012 23:18

Ach we all have Heathcliff in us, a bit of wild Haworthian heather and heavy heart with flashing eyes and distant glare.....we all have a bit of the git in us too. Is true.

lunchbox · 12/08/2012 23:40

Edward and Bella

Just kidding Grin

BonzoDooDah · 13/08/2012 00:05

Grin at Quirrel

Be interested in Rebecca's Tale.

Haribojoe · 13/08/2012 00:09

Dinah from Red Tent.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 13/08/2012 00:10

I'm so pleased to see some Dark Is Rising fans. DS5 was actually named from those books (Barney & Simon)

I also love Phil Rickman, and Merrily is such a pretty name but I'd worry I'd end up giving birth to a miserable girl!

Stephen Lawhead is another of my faves and I love the names Taliesin (boy) and Charis (girl)

ObviouslyInvisible · 13/08/2012 00:12

Lyra (His Dark Materials) or Arya (A Song of Ice and Fire)

Faramir (LOTR) or Ron (Harry Potter)

ColourMeWithChaos · 13/08/2012 00:41

Holden from Catcher in the Rye, Owen from Prayer for Owen Meany, Jude from Jude the Obscure or Leopold from Ulysses for a boy.

Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice, Anna from Anna Karenina, Esther from The Bell Jar or Hester from The Scarlet Letter for a girl.

almapudden · 13/08/2012 00:48

When I was 14 I decided that if I had a son, I would call him Kheldar. Wine for anyone who can correctly identify the works of towering literary genius book(s) I got that one from.

ColourMeWithChaos · 13/08/2012 01:05

alma is it from The Belgariad series? My DBro was obsessed with them when he was a teenager and I read the one summer when I was stuck inside with glandular fever.

zaphod · 13/08/2012 01:12

Jean louise To Kill a Mocking Bird, Samuel, The Runner (Cynthia Voight), Charles, Little House on the Prairie, and dh named the other two.

Nyx · 13/08/2012 01:18

I did name DD after Lucy from Narnia - I always said if I had a girl she would be Lucy. And had she been a boy, she'd have been Ged, except we'd have spelt it Jed.

monsterchild · 13/08/2012 01:20

I used to love the name Atticus until I was at a lecture where the speaker (using TKAM as inspiration) kept pronouncing it "adequate". He was telling us all to strive to be an "Adequate Finch".

Since then I've really considered myself a superlative sparrow, and decided I would giggle too much if I ever named a child that...

monsterchild · 13/08/2012 01:21

ooh, Nyx, i loved Ged, but Jed is more hillbilly than wise wizard.
