Had our 20 week scan today, not only are we lucky enough to be having a healthy baby, but we also found out will be having a boy. Squeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

We already have a (very ecstatic) 7 year old boy - Oscar.

Names we both like:
Felix
Spike
Max

Names I like:
Caspar
Ptolemy (I know Grin Wink)

Names DH likes:
Stanley
Elvis (I know Confused Hmm)

What else could be add to our list? Our surname begins with an N and is one syllable.

Absolutely. I could imagine just as many reasons for wanting to be named something unusual (e.g. Elvis, Spike, Caspar, Ptolemy) than something more common (e.g. Jack, Harry, Alfie, Tom), although I personally would prefer a less common name.

Depending on what field of work you're working in, it can be beneficial to be easily 'found' and identified, which becomes more difficult if your name is Tom Smith, Harry Jones or Jack Miller for example.

We sometimes forget that the whole point of naming someone or something is to identify him/her/it.

I grew up with a name that is unusual for my age group (although v common in under ten ish now). Coupled with a foreign place name as a middle name and complicated to spell Irish surname, I hated it. I used to tell people I was called Laura.

Now, thanks to lots of tenish yo girls, and a traditional English occupation surname (and barely used middle name), there is nothing odd about my name (although I do share it with a rock star), which I love.

BikeRunSki, did ou hate having an unusual first name or did you hate having to spell your complicated Irish surname?

Personally I always wished that I had a more unusual first name, at one point there were 4 Rachels in our class....

I hated my unsual first name mainly, although the rest of my name didn't help.
