Pretty, cool & unusual girls' names

We have just found out that our third (and final) attempt at IVF was successful and that we are having a girl. Although I've had years to think of names, I am completely out of inspiration at the moment. Also, we live overseas so are not familiar with the trends in the UK.

I would really appreciate some suggestions. I am looking for a pretty name, but one that is also cool. And not in the Top 100.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Pearl - I know a little Pearl and she's absolutely lovely

redrubyshoes · 31/01/2012 15:08

Sardine

But would you want to be The Mother of Pearl? Smile

imip · 31/01/2012 17:20

I second pearl, as I have one! I am the mother of pearl. Currently have one week old dd5 sitting next to me. Currently unnamed because we thought she was ds1. It's between kitty or violet, but surname begins with v and name may sound like a porn name.
I have an oz friend who has an elke. I also love clemence, but dh refuses!

Also quite like Anja/Anya

PuraVida · 31/01/2012 21:50

Ooooo I love margot, which reminds me I know a lovely margarita, i think that's how it's spelt, her mother is Russian (and looks like angina jolie )

redrubyshoes · 31/01/2012 21:52

True.

No one is called Mussel, Winkle or Cockle Wink

JobCarHouseNoBaby · 31/01/2012 22:08

Sadly no DC for me yet, but here's a list of cool unusual girls names from school/uni/work:

Jasmine
Adeola
Yeska (Swedish I think)
Esme
Thea (she was Norwegian)
Maya (may-a, Aussie)
Jacqueline
Betsy (nn for Elizabeth)
Verity
Petra
Kirsten
Ella (think probably popular now)

Congratulations!

JobCarHouseNoBaby · 31/01/2012 22:10

Forgot to add, Thea is pronounced tay-ah not thee-ah!

Offspring · 31/01/2012 22:10

Congratulations!

Sasha
Delphi
Thea
Romilly

How do you pronounce Valentina with a British accent? Genuinely curious, I'm Austalian and I've tried saying it out loud. I think it still sounds nice - to my ears anyway!

Good luck choosing from your lovely short list :).

Offspring · 31/01/2012 22:13

X-post with Job and a repeat with Thea (although with pn. Thee-a). I was too busy sitting here saying Valentina and not posting!

Tonksforthememories · 31/01/2012 22:15

Ooh DD2 is Eden!
I love:
Merren/Merryn
Arya
Romilly

Friend of mine has a Valentina and she's the most gorgeous girl, barring my DDs of course! :o
Congratulations! Thanks

SeaStrand · 31/01/2012 22:16

I wanted a Pearl Delilah (Lila for short) for a second girl, but I had a boy.
I once taught an Eden which I thought was a cool name.

MissGreatBritain · 31/01/2012 22:19

Flora
Rita
Claudia
Florence
Rowan
Elodie
Jana
Mercy

PercyFilth · 31/01/2012 23:22

Mercy is very cool, and surprisingly uncommon. You would think with the popularity of other 'virtue' names like Grace that it would have caught on, but it remains mysteriously exclusive!

kiteflying · 01/02/2012 01:27

Lulu
Aphra
Iris
Elsa

kiteflying · 01/02/2012 01:29

Congrats on your pregnancy. It is lovely having a baby after wanting and wanting one for so long. Do what we did and give your baby three names!

brdgrl · 01/02/2012 01:37

kiteflying, i also had a long long wait...and DD has four names.

Blush
MoggieThatcher · 01/02/2012 01:41

FizzyMakeFeelNice · 01/02/2012 01:41

Ohh, 3 suggestions of Aria/Arya on here! That's my beautiful DD's name! Those that suggested it, where did you get it from, out of curiosity?

TheCatInTheHairnet · 01/02/2012 01:44

congratulations on the much wanted pregnancy!
Addy/Addie. I love that name, and only know one in rl and she is a very cool 7 year old.
