Three syllabel Girls Names - with nice shortening

I'm not bothered by popularity. I have a popular name and I like it.

I love the names Isabel, Olivia, Amelia, but would not use as I'd run the risk of Izzy, Livvie or Milly. I don't like the ie or y ending.

I like a classic strong name.

I have a lot of name associations, so although nice names, I would not use Annabel, Verity, Catherine, Christina, Susannah or Violet. I just can't get past the people I know with these names. Silly I know.

Certain names that trend on here, such as Allegra, I consider too posh, and it doesn't fit with common DH and I.

Hope I have not offended everyone.

So far we have one name:

Helena

Any other suggestions?

It's not very pretty sounding and nobody likes Edwina Curry. It's a bit like calling your son Adolf. It just won't happen.

AKissIsNotAContract · 10/12/2011 14:17

I'm called Helen and was called Hell at school. It doesn't matter what you choose for a nickname, the kids at school will have other ideas.

prizeelliott · 10/12/2011 14:17

Yey I got on the list!!! Why am I so happy about this?!!! Love the name game!!! Love Helena/Nel....gourgeous.

Good luck with everything!! x

HoHoHoFunIntended · 10/12/2011 14:48

Heloise.
Or Heloisa if Heloise runs into your surname too much.

PeanutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 10/12/2011 19:43

Eliza Faye is very pretty and I think fits with a pretty, intelligent farmers daughter Grin

EssentialFattyAcid · 10/12/2011 19:51

Sarah

EssentialFattyAcid · 10/12/2011 19:59

Serena

Redrubyblues · 12/12/2011 09:50

Can I suggest a one syllable name?

Grace - pretty, non poncey and will never date or even Eliza Grace

shouldnotbehere · 12/12/2011 13:25

FellatioNelson - Lana is lovely

Ishbel - not so keen.

Edwina - euggh. As Fellatio said ruined by Edwina Currie. Horrid image just came into my head of her having a bath with John Major. Arrrgggg

Heloisa / Heloise - not keen, just a bit pretentious. Thank you though.

Sarah - too many name associations

Grace - I know this is a popular name but I don't like it at all. I just think Grease, rather than Grace Kelly.

I'm signing out for a little while, as need to get up to date at work, will update on name thoughts in New Year.

Thanks all.

Dh decided that he loved FFion above all the others on the shortlist, and although it didn't fit with me, it was a grower, and it was pretty much settled on.

Last night, one of our best friends text, to say that they'd called their baby daughter Ffion.

So now we are back to the drawing board, and the shortlist is:

Helena
Iona
Faye
Eliza

Iona

redrubyshoes · 05/01/2012 13:53

That is sorted then.

Next!

shouldnotbehere · 05/01/2012 14:03

Nope. Not sorted. I have been going off Helena, Iona and Eliza. Not sure why - perhaps its hormones. The only other name I like at the moment is Fay. Spelt FAY.

DH does not like it.

Strangely I'm also liking Laura.

I know an Isobel known as Bella (if you want to avoid Izzy).

redrubyshoes · 05/01/2012 14:06

Laura Fay?

OrmIrian · 05/01/2012 14:08

Tabitha? I guess the shortening might be Tabby though Hmm But tabitha is pretty,

redrubyshoes · 05/01/2012 14:08

Why don't you name her after me?

redrubyshoes · 05/01/2012 14:10

OP thinks the name Tabitha is for a cat and has rejected every other name in the known universe. We are currently researching names from the Kappa Epsilon Delta which is eleventy million light years from our galaxy.

shouldnotbehere · 05/01/2012 14:20

So well remembered RedRubyShoes.

From three syllable girls names, without y or ie ending or nickname. I'm now loving Fay, Emilia and Laura.

Ah OK. Should have read all of thread then.... Hmmpphhh.

Laura's alright I guess.....

redrubyshoes · 05/01/2012 15:50

How about Laxia The First and Most Supreme Mistress of the Universe and All Creation - it sounds sweet.

shouldnotbehere · 26/01/2012 14:07

WE HAVE A NAME!!!! Yes, we have a boy and girl's name......

DH has agreed to Sylvia (suggested by Belgo). I initially said that I loved the name, but it conjured up images of old ladies and made me sing the song... Sylvia's mother says Sylvia's busy, to busy to come to the phone.... I HAVE MANAGED TO OVERLOOK BOTH THE OLD LADIES AND THE SONG (actually I do like the song). Yay!!!

DH likes the shortening Sylvie. I didn't want a -ie ending nickname, as it alliterates with our surname, however if it means getting his agreement, he can call her Sylvie.

Thank you everybody.
