Three syllabel Girls Names - with nice shortening

shouldnotbehere · 07/12/2011 15:04

I'm not bothered by popularity. I have a popular name and I like it.

I love the names Isabel, Olivia, Amelia, but would not use as I'd run the risk of Izzy, Livvie or Milly. I don't like the ie or y ending.

I like a classic strong name.

I have a lot of name associations, so although nice names, I would not use Annabel, Verity, Catherine, Christina, Susannah or Violet. I just can't get past the people I know with these names. Silly I know.

Certain names that trend on here, such as Allegra, I consider too posh, and it doesn't fit with common DH and I.

Hope I have not offended everyone.

So far we have one name:

Helena

Any other suggestions?

Beverley
Melody
Mirabel/Mirabelle
Serena
Romilly

Nerissa
Blandine (pronounced Blondine)

I think you need to forget about shortenings many people don't shorten. for instance i wouldn't shorten a Melinda I would just say Melinda

kalo12 · 08/12/2011 16:14

Hannah

HoHoHoFunIntended · 08/12/2011 16:16

You said you liked Abigail earlier, I think it should go on your list.

maybetoday · 08/12/2011 16:17

How about Juliette, with Jules as a short. None of the Juliettes I know are ever called Julie.
Has Harriet been suggested yet?

shouldnotbehere · 08/12/2011 16:39

I do like Abigail, but I can't get passed the name associations. Not a sleb this time, but real life.

Update, DH does not like the names Caroline or Scarlett, he's not too keen on Faye Helena or Lillian either, but its not a dislike. He likes Iona and Lorna!!

I've gone off Angharad, I like the name, but it just doesn't make my heart sing. I may have been influenced by redrubyblues description.

Juliet, I'm singing in my head the Dire Straits song - a lovestruck romeo.... So much better than the Killers version.

I love Juliet, but I have an irrational dislike for the name Julie, and just don't want to take the risk.

Current list

Iona - MrsOzz
Lorna - FellatioNelson

Faye
Lillian
Helena

FellatioNelson · 08/12/2011 16:42

The stumbling block in all of these seems to be the husband. Perhaps he needs to go.

FellatioNelson · 08/12/2011 16:42

Harriet.

AnotherMincepie · 08/12/2011 16:45

Useful (or useless) facts about your shortlist...

Three of your shortlist end with "na" (and one of the others with its reverse "an").
All of your shortlist start with a letter in the first half of the alphabet.
All the names contain only fairly "soft" sounds, i.e. no hard consonants.

shouldnotbehere · 08/12/2011 16:48

There's an update. Just had a quick look back through the thread, and theres other additions:

Eliza (cheeseandmarmitesandwich, Crumbletopping, ThoseClementineShoes, and FellatioNelson - must be an "in" name with so many suggestions)

Isabel (yes, I know on my first post, I didn't like Izzy, but taking the risk, that she will be Isabel, for now)

I did consider Cassandra, but thought it would become Cassie or Sandy, and I'm not keen on either.

Redrubyblues · 08/12/2011 16:49

I think Agnes should be considered and I agree with Fellatio regarding the picky husband. Way to much power is being handed over to him and not us

shouldnotbehere · 08/12/2011 16:50

AnotherMincepie - thank you. It's interesting to have my taste in names deciphered. Much appreciated.

Harriet - this has been one of my DH suggested names, but alas it's a name I don't like. Not sure why. Also don't like the nn's Harrie or Hattie.

Helena Faye surname
Iona Faye surname
Lorna Faye surname
Iona Katherine surname
Faye Charlotte surname
Eliza Faye surname
Isabel Faye surname
Lillian Charlotte surname

(Yes, Charlotte is a new name, middle but not a first name. I love this name, but I have friends and cousin with the name. Lillian is a bit risky, so just in case daughter does not like the name I love, she has a nice safe middle name. A friend from school's parent chose an unusual first name, but my friend didn't like it, and changed to using second name - when still in primary school.)

So is the three-syllable condition abandoned then?

SmashCake · 08/12/2011 17:04

Has any suggested Samantha yet?

PercyFilth · 08/12/2011 17:07

Oh, and I think you should reconsider Julia. Timeless classic which is not much used now, and I have never known a Julia who has been called Julie. All the Julies I have ever known have actually been named Julie, not Julia.

HugeGrant · 08/12/2011 18:09

Phoebe
Henrietta

[racks brain for any girls name not here]

I've never stuck with a baby names thread for so long! Xmas Grin

cheeseandmarmitesandwich · 08/12/2011 18:17

As you're in Wales, has anyone suggested Seren? Beautiful Welsh name for star. Or Serena?

Anyone else desperate to know when OP is due? I think this baby name will be more eagerly awaited than Lily Allen's!

prizeelliott · 08/12/2011 18:21

I know it isn't really what you asked for, but had I been choosing an english name (rather than Welsh) I would have gone with this all day!!

Love it.... Nel

Let it sink in!
I love it, strong, yet kind, intelligent yet aproachable, traditional yet fun!

Either that or Elsie (lttle nieces name...is adorable on an actual child! She even has white ringlets!!!!)

prizeelliott · 08/12/2011 18:28

Oh you are in Wales...sorry jumped in without reading the whole thing! That changes everything!
My 3 DD's Tesni Angharad, Nia Haf and Betsan Awel (please don't slag those as I love them all...now...rocky road finding them!)

Ana
Ania
Cerys
Llio
Glesni
Annest
Heulwen
Branwen
Elain
Marged
Glain

Hope they help x

PiratecatClaus · 08/12/2011 18:34

oh, can i take credit for the maybe middle name Charlotte if the baby is a girl. Xmas Wink

MrsOzz · 08/12/2011 23:26

Ooo glad to see Iona is still on your list. I do LOVE that name (can't use it though as DH is Ian and sister is Fiona).

Iona Faye is my favourite on your list.
Iona Charlotte is also lovely.
I do also love Helena but Iona just sounds a teeny bit more special to my ears.

Lorna is nice too, but it makes me think of Lorne sausages. And as someone with as many name associations as you, I'm sure you can appreciate that!

Redrubyblues · 09/12/2011 09:39

A few more for you to mull over;

April
Avril
Belinda
Bronwyn (I read somewhere that this means 'Beautiful Breasts' Xmas Grin

Camerondiazepam · 09/12/2011 12:02

Josephine?
