Three syllabel Girls Names - with nice shortening

I'm not bothered by popularity. I have a popular name and I like it.

I love the names Isabel, Olivia, Amelia, but would not use as I'd run the risk of Izzy, Livvie or Milly. I don't like the ie or y ending.

I like a classic strong name.

I have a lot of name associations, so although nice names, I would not use Annabel, Verity, Catherine, Christina, Susannah or Violet. I just can't get past the people I know with these names. Silly I know.

Certain names that trend on here, such as Allegra, I consider too posh, and it doesn't fit with common DH and I.

Hope I have not offended everyone.

So far we have one name:

Helena

Any other suggestions?

FellatioNelson

Iona Faye is beautiful isn't it?

Not giving daughter my middle name, just a bit narcisstic. Thanks

Oh I was coming on to suggest Cassandra - a fine name Xmas Wink

Cassie - helper of man

Cass - if you don't like Cassie (but why wouldn't you?!)

scarlettlips · 08/12/2011 13:28

Hahaha I thought as much should Faye Iona or Iona Katherine?

I think you SHOULD use a name you love regardless of bloody syllables.

ps; my dd is Honor. Would love an Iona but it doesn't work with Honor.

Redrubyblues · 08/12/2011 13:30

Agnes is a good strong name.

If I had my way your little cherub would be called Kylie-Peaches-Heavenly-Sinitta-Pepsi-Sonia-Beyonce-Britney-Your Surname.

shouldnotbehere · 08/12/2011 13:30

Cynthia - not us, I think synthesise
Seraphina - love this name, DH considers it poncey. Previously run it by him
Isadora - love this name, but DH considers poncey
Evangeline - evangelical comes to mind, sorry
Persephone - not a name I could use, just not us. I am trying to make my way through the Persephone books. Oooh, I should start a Persephone book thread. I love them. Only read three so far though (started making my way through them two years ago).

I think this should be moved to Classics. My particular favourite...

"Emerald - it's a rock, and it's green too"

Shouldnotbehere -I think I love you...

hohohoshedittant · 08/12/2011 13:31

You like Eliza, but not any nn, so call her Elizabeth and shorten to Eliza?

Maybe you should rethink your naming philosophy and instead of naming her exactly what she will be (a working class, farmers daughter with soft 'r's' resident in North Wales) give her a name to grow into, something exotic or heroic?

scarlettlips · 08/12/2011 13:32

My DD has my middle name..
I don't see it being an issue, Katherine is a great name. I know loads of children with their mother or fathers first name as a middle name. I think it's nice, you could have Faye Iona Katherine...put it at the end!

shouldnotbehere · 08/12/2011 13:32

Veronica - I dont find this name pretty. For some reason a veruca comes to mind.

Lorna - I picked this name for my daughter as a child, after reading Lorna Doone. Perhaps it could go on the list. ITS ON THE LIST.

FellatioNelson

Why can't you just tell your DH you are having Penelope and tough shit? Penelope is beautiful and Penny is nice, and we are all tired and losing the will to live now.

Because my husband is more stubborn than I am, and doesnt give in, AT ALL. If he doesn't like he doesn't like it. I can't change him.

Elspeth

PercyFilth · 08/12/2011 13:39

Besides the issues with R and S, I think you should also avoid names with an N or an M in, in case anyone who meets her ever has a cold. Wink

ThatsNotSantasBabyBelly · 08/12/2011 13:40

Antoinette

mrswoodentop · 08/12/2011 13:41

Why are you obsessing about the shortened form,I have threee children ,all are called by their names not by a nickname derivative, who on earth would shorten Juliet to Julie they are two completely different names .

In my experience nicknames develop mainly at school by the child's friends and you will have no control whatsoever over that.

ThatsNotSantasBabyBelly · 08/12/2011 13:41

Georgina

shouldnotbehere · 08/12/2011 13:41

Heather - aunties name

Jasmine - dont like nn Jas

Linden - a chocolatre

Dahlia - not us, but nice all the same

Tamsin - I LIKE, ON THE LIST. Is it posh?

Theodora - not us, but its still a nice name

Thea - don't like this name, I think its the TH, that puts me off. Is it pronouned Thee-ah or Tia. Th's can be difficult to pronoucse

Kirsten - like, but not enough.

I don't understand why you want Huw for a boy but have discounted Fay for a girl as it is just one syllable

I think one syllable names are strong and masculine for a boy. We both love the name Huw.

For a girl, I think three syllables is pretty and gives her options. We have a short surname, so it just works to my ears.

I knew a Thea, but it was pronounced Tay-ah
