Three syllabel Girls Names - with nice shortening

I'm not bothered by popularity. I have a popular name and I like it.

I love the names Isabel, Olivia, Amelia, but would not use as I'd run the risk of Izzy, Livvie or Milly. I don't like the ie or y ending.

I like a classic strong name.

I have a lot of name associations, so although nice names, I would not use Annabel, Verity, Catherine, Christina, Susannah or Violet. I just can't get past the people I know with these names. Silly I know.

Certain names that trend on here, such as Allegra, I consider too posh, and it doesn't fit with common DH and I.

Hope I have not offended everyone.

So far we have one name:

Helena

Any other suggestions?

Jocasta was the mother of Oedipus, so it's been a name since the Greek myths! Annabeth is probably a recent coining (heroine of the Percy Jackson books); I rather like it!

On a mythological note: Thalia, Artemis, Athena, Calypso, Callista, Hestia?

Tabitha - a cats name
Keziah - sounds made up
Miranda - I've previously suggested this to DH, he doesn't like it
Jezebel - just not us, we're too boring/safe for a daughter called Jezebel
Saskia - doesnt work with surname
Theresa - ruined by Theresa May, and a bit 1960s.

Thank you.

Sorry, not very good on my Greek myths

Thalia - not us, sorry. We're both over 6ft, rather gangly and naturally blonde.
Artemis - not us.
Athena - I love this name, but it's again not us. I associate it with the Onassis heiress btw
Calypso - It will always be Loveday's mother in Coming Home, played brilliantly by Joanna Lumley in the screen adaptation
Callista - too close to Canistor, although I do like Callista Flockhart
Hestia - again, not us.

Tilda is quite nice, but too old ladyish for my ears. Too close to the name Hilda.

Jacinta - not us
Louanne - sounds made up to me
Mariella - associate it with Frostrup, she is rather gorgeous though. Too posh for us
Hermione - Harry Potter, and just not us.
Eloise - love this name, I really love it, but DH does not like it.

Glad you said that, it's my DD's name ! Xmas Grin

It means "Father's Happiness".

The only issue I have is that you would not believe the amount of people who cannot grasp the concept of 'shortening'.

We have Abbi, Aby, Abby, Abbey, Abbie etc....

Abigail - Abi It's really not that hard !

shouldnotbehere · 07/12/2011 15:46

Rebecca - my cousin's name. I love this name, but don't like nickname Becky, and I'm very close to my cousin, so couldn't use it. I love the Daphne du Maurier book Rebecca too.

kalo12 - I would just use the name Helena without a moments hesitation, but DH is not too keen, but if we can't find a name we both love, we will use it, if that makes sense.

Canella · 07/12/2011 15:48

Realised the last 2 are 4 syllables - no use!

shouldnotbehere · 07/12/2011 15:49
