Last year's statistics have just been released http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=184 online

Oliver and Olivia still top names.

I'm about to scour the rest of the list for inspiration and to check the names I've chosen aren't too popular

What do we think?

Joes-v?
Am lurking hoping no one mocks my ds's name considering only 5 of them registered last year, though the shortened version is at 132

stardustn · 28/07/2011 21:30

41 sets of parents used Pheobe Shock which made me think it might be pronounced differently or be a different name than a misspelling of Phoebe

MelinaM · 28/07/2011 21:33

I think it more likely to be a misspelling! ...unfortunately!

TeaOneSugar · 28/07/2011 21:33

My SIL will be very put out that there are over 500 girls out there with her daughters very unusual name Grin.

Orla is up to 175. Wasn't in top 500 when we named DD! Must have spread out of the Irish community.

stardustn · 28/07/2011 21:42

VivianDarkbloom I know, I couldn't believe how high up it was for a misspelling Shock

bilblio · 28/07/2011 21:42

I wonder if as a registrar you could ever point out to people that it may be spelt wrong?

I've an unusual name, (even more unusual than Pheobe) people spell it wrong all the time and I've had the odd person insist that it's spelt differently. I generally point them towards a dictionary seeing as it's in any half decent one.

MelinaM · 28/07/2011 21:42

It is addictive reading is it not ladies?! Grin

The amount of 'creatively' spelt names is infuriating ...or is that just me?!!!

MelinaM · 28/07/2011 21:44

Surely they research their potential name and find out the correct spelling? ..non?! Hmm

stardustn · 28/07/2011 21:46

Very addictive reading!

Apparently a fair amount of people don't, worryingly Confused

mogandthecat · 28/07/2011 21:46

Some of the names questioned on here are perfectly legitimate:

Chavah/Chavi - Yiddish form of Eve, shame it has been ruined by the C word!

Ila - gaelic spelling of Islay, also a Sanskrit name meaning Earth/Speech

Northernlurker · 28/07/2011 21:49

Hurrah. Dd3's name is still out of the top 100 and dd1 and dd2's names are well down the list. That's the way I like it Grin

stardustn · 28/07/2011 21:49

3 Avelines last year as well, which just reminds me of Bread :) That's the only place I've heard that name. I'm making myself seem older than I am here! :o

MelinaM · 28/07/2011 21:49

Umm very worrying indeed, it just goes to highlight the state this country is in! Shock

My DDs are at number one - but when I chose it over 20 years ago I was worried it might be too obscure, and was reassured by the existence of Olivia Newton-John! - with the others at 613 and 862. But Olivia has now added a forename and calls herself Lily. Not that that is much less popular!

3 Messiahs. That's going to get nasty later.

TadBitStrange · 28/07/2011 21:55

Wow in 2010 there were 3 girls named Xi, 3 named Qi, 7 named Chavi and I also found some 'unique' spellings of Maisie - Mazy, Mayzi, Maezie, and Maisi. Hmm

ebsln · 28/07/2011 21:59

Just checked, and in the year Olivia was born, it wasn't in the top 100 - shows how things change.
