Last year's statistics have just been released http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=184 online

Oliver and Olivia still top names.

I'm about to scour the rest of the list for inspiration and to check the names I've chosen aren't too popular

What do we think?

Thanks CaptainNancy, interesting reading there.

381 boys named Filip.

QueenOfFeckingEverything · 28/07/2011 13:15

Is Filip not a Polish spelling of Philip though?

Sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 28/07/2011 13:17

Jayden, Jaiden, Jaden, Jaydon.

103 Maksymilian - is this a traditional variant?

Sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 28/07/2011 13:18

I did wonder Queen!

CaptainNancy · 28/07/2011 13:20

I feel sorry for the 3 boys called Tailor though... and the 3 called Taeler Confused

I am surprised to see 'Ollie' so high up, all the Ollies we know are actually Olivers on their birth certificates.

Actually the Sylvesters stand a good chance of being Polish too...

Sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 28/07/2011 13:20

Maksymilian is also Polish, can see Igor in there as well which is possibly the coolest name ever.

CaptainNancy · 28/07/2011 13:21

QoFE- I'm guessing the parents of Biscuit-Hymen wanted to keep it quiet?

jellybeans · 28/07/2011 13:48

I like reading the stats. I think they should do a spellings together one aswell. Names like Lexi/Lexie are obviously the same name; yes they could be pronounced differently the odd time but so could names spelled the same. If you add up all the spellings of names like Isabelle and Zack they all come much higher up the list. It's interesting to see so many short forms more popular than the long forms; Archie, Alfie, Ollie etc. Wonder if this will be a long lasting thing.

littlemisstax · 28/07/2011 13:49

Aren't most of the names with 3 instances just spelt wrong?

Abbiegail? Chole? Hollee? Bayleigh? Leiam?

I'm pleased that DD's name is still in the top 100, but not the top 50, but falling. We wanted something common enough that people could say and spell it, but not so common there will be more than one or two in her class at school.

CaptainNancy · 28/07/2011 13:52

Spelt wrong? [shocked]. My little Mackyynnziee is just special.

ShoutyHamster · 28/07/2011 13:53

DD's not there - I suspect that she is definitely one of the 1s Grin

Cherrypi · 28/07/2011 13:53

Can't the registrars tell them they're spelling it incorrectly?

mypersonalfavourite · 28/07/2011 14:11

How do I find the full list?!

NotJustKangaskhan · 28/07/2011 14:12

princessdave · 28/07/2011 14:52

Oh dear, our favoured boys name is number 3 and girls number 6! We picked them when we found out I was pg and never really gave a thought to looking at the stats, just double checked if any of our friends/relatives had used the names in recent years (they hadn't!). Ah well, if we like them that's all that matters, esp with Smith as a surname, I wasn't keen on going for anything obscure! :)

WiiUnfit · 28/07/2011 15:01

Grin PMSL...

'A-Jay', 'C-Jay', 'T-Jay'

'Osama', 'Ferdinand', 'Barack', 'Beckham'

'Precious', 'Goodluck', 'Gift'

'Tiaamii'

'A', 'C'

'KC', 'TJ', 'MD'

'Baby'

[facepalm]

WiiUnfit · 28/07/2011 15:02

Oh & my favourite variant: Daniyaal Shock

CaptainNancy · 28/07/2011 15:06

No- Daniyaal is valid Asian name! (same root as Daniel, different name)

Cherrypi · 28/07/2011 15:07

Jack-Daniel is fairly terrible. Also Ace, Merlin and Lancelot?

princessdave · 28/07/2011 15:08

WiiUnfit - where are you seeing those?! I hadn't spotted the t-jay's etc!!

NotJustKangaskhan · 28/07/2011 15:19

I believe 'Baby' is what is listed in the stats if the child isn't registered within the 6 weeks.

There seems to be a lot of growth in short form names and double first names, particularly among boys. I'm surprised that a classic like Alexandra look close to dropping out of the top 100, I thought it would be much higher.

I'm mostly just happy, as a pregnant woman, that none of my short list names have become really popular Grin though I'm surprised at where they rank. The ones I thought were 'odd/unusual' ranks far higher than the one I thought was 'normal'.

Cattleprod · 28/07/2011 15:43

It all gets much more interesting towards the bottom of the list, doesn't it?!! Seems to be all kre8tiv spellings, Asian names (the Asian cultures must have a much bigger variety of names to choose from, or maybe more confidence to pick something different) or double barrelled names. There's the odd name right down the bottom that seems pretty 'normal' - Sandy, Timmy, Wallace etc., so they must just be out of fashion at the moment.

I do feel a bit sorry for the 7 little Manmeets - I hope they weren't named after their fathers', .........erm,..........manmeat!

Quenelle · 28/07/2011 15:44

Agree the spellings shouldn't matter, they all sound the same when yelled in Asda called in the playground.

Cattleprod · 28/07/2011 15:47

Is there an easy way of searching for a particular name to find out it's rank, without having to scroll down and look through the entire list?

Nancy66 · 28/07/2011 15:52

i can't open the full list of 100 names - is it in some weird format?
