Last year's statistics have just been released http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=184 online

Oliver and Olivia still top names.

I'm about to scour the rest of the list for inspiration and to check the names I've chosen aren't too popular

What do we think?

@muminthemiddle - true about future popularity. I have a cousin named Jack. At the time he was born our reaction was very much Shock as it was such an old-fashioned name. He is now 21 and Jack is incredibly popular.

Just searched the list properly and DDs name is in there at the mid-600s so not too bad. I did think it very strange that it wouldn't be in there at all.

4madboys · 29/07/2011 12:21

i cant look at the lists, grr can anyone find the name Rudi for a boy? i am wondering where it is, i think its growing in popularity, mine is 3 now tho.

stardustn · 29/07/2011 12:27

Rudi is no.574 with 59 boys with the name last year :)

4madboys · 29/07/2011 12:39

thankyou, i knew it wasnt that common but didnt think it was that unusual either!

mine was born in 2008 and i have since met one in a park, but thats it.

i have no idea why the list wont open for me, it just redirects me to some microsoft site? very odd and annoying!

redlac6 · 29/07/2011 12:52

Scotland's baby name list came out ages ago!

NoHunIntended · 29/07/2011 13:06

Olenska, for some of us, part of the appeal of our chosen names is that they aren't that well-used.

I'd be interested to know middle names too.

SusanneLinder · 29/07/2011 13:23

With some of the names on that list, it is pretty obvious that some people like to name after some very obscure celebrities.

And the misspelling of many popular names just makes me cringe.....

Wiktoria?????? Someone is having a larf-surelyShock

gallicgirl · 29/07/2011 13:54

Popular Polish version of Victoria, I imagine.

Quite interesting to see how many non-English spellings there are. Just shows how multicultural the UK is becoming.

vividgingerchilli · 29/07/2011 13:56

Wiktoria is Polish, I know a few of them. It's pronounced the same as Victoria.

vividgingerchilli · 29/07/2011 14:01

Is Chavi a Jewish name?

issynoko · 29/07/2011 15:56

How do you see the full list? Thanks!

Megfox · 29/07/2011 16:35

I named my first son Asa Jon.
Asa was for Al Jolson, while Jon was for a favourite cousin

My second son is named Calum Emrys MacDonald.

Calum is for a friend, Emrys is the name by which King Arthur was known during his childhood with Merlin - and I was totally into the Arthurian thing at the time; I'd have chosen Arthur, but that it suggested a character from east Enders, rather than the legendary king - while MacDonald is our clan name, derived from our Scottish heritage.

I can't be doing with trends in names. I've seen too many children named Kylie and Jason, too many named Demi......
I even heard someone recently calling to her son named Travis......

Name your children not after so-called stars, or by what names happen to be trendy.
Give them names that have significance to you.

NorfolkBroad · 29/07/2011 17:28

I would say name your children what you like within reason! I have taught for many years and even the most unusual of names ends up suiting the child and seeming sweet. It does appear though that children find having a very unusual name quite difficult. The only rule i had when picking my dds name was that people wouldn't constantly say "WHAT?" every time she introduced herself. It ended up being one of the most popular names and has remained so but I think it's beautiful and it suits her.

saoirse86 · 29/07/2011 17:34

Well my DD was one of 59 last year, my niece was one of 9, there were 52 born with my name, but my sister's name isn't on there at all! We always said my mum made it up! Grin

I also noticed the 9 Neveahs, though admittedly that's how I automatically spell it thinking of the pronounciation, and I have to correct myself by thinking that it's heaven backwards :o

NotJustKangaskhan · 29/07/2011 19:46

vivid Yes, Chavi is a Hebrew name. It's usually a nickname though.

Mortal · 29/07/2011 20:02

So glad my sons name was not listed.

vividgingerchilli · 29/07/2011 20:05

I thought Chavi might be, it sounded similar to names I've seen mentioned by an Orthodox Jew that I know. I wonder if she's on here, I expect she might be.
