As I said, I just did not have a clue Clementine was so popular and was initially a bit Hmm when DH suggested it, but this was not to be 'posh' or 'on trend' it was simply to remember DHs great gran (not posh at all!) and I absolutely love it as nearly 1yr old DDs middle name now! Grin Also chuffed no one has mentioned her first name! Grin

mrsjohnsimm · 19/05/2011 12:01

Honor. I know of three Honors born in the last year, and it was on my list too.

MamaLazarou · 19/05/2011 12:06

I can see plain names such as John, Jane, Mark and Clare making a comeback.

hellojude · 19/05/2011 12:54

NOOOOOO not Honor....Shock That's my DD's name! Not impressed picked it because it wasn't trendy or popular!!! Grrrr

Clementine is defintely becoming popular, I remember there was a couple of Radio 4 discussing their children and they repeatedly referred to their daughter as Clemmie but the father had a strong Brummie accent and all I kept hearing was Clamaaaaaay, it was odd and sounded as though she was very damp.

I think MamaLazarou has a point, as those with grandparents/parents with the plainer names become more frail, they will want to commemorate them by naming their offspring with those names. They have the advantage of sounding unpretentious (perhaps a little too safe for now) and are consciously non-aspirant which may merge well with forthcoming times of austerity.

Jean - I'm telling you, it will be the next Ruby.

KittyBigglesworth · 19/05/2011 13:25

Yes, plus there is the forthcoming series about Jean Shrimpton. God, does that mean Terry and Julie will become trendy?

KittyBigglesworth · 19/05/2011 13:27

Honor is on its way up, largely due to Jessica Alba's daughter. Annoying for those not naming after 'slebs'.

Nancy66 · 19/05/2011 13:29

Jean - can be cool. I can see that. I know a couple that have called their daughter that.

Terry and Julie will never be cool

freesias · 19/05/2011 13:33

also wondered if vera may rise in popularity after the recent detective series not vera duckworth.

have noticed on recent threads people suggesting names such as susan and anne , christine etc as middle names after mothers and mils and have wondered if once unused names start to reappear as middle names , do they then reemerge and become accepted over time as first names.

funnily dd1 (18) and ger friends think freda is a lovely name, 10+ years from now maybe freda will be the new lola.

NormanNorris · 19/05/2011 13:46

You may have a point about Jean. There was a baby Jeanie on a property program last week and a friend has just had a Jeanie.

legallyblond · 19/05/2011 13:58

I predict Clara, Freya and Honor for girls, and Xavier, Nathaniel and Max for boys as being the next Ruby/Eva/Finley names.

Do you know, I have liked Jean for a while, but put off using it, I am sure it is very up and coming, along with Joan/ie and possibly Jane.
Definately Arlo aswell - that is going to be big.

redcarnations · 19/05/2011 14:10

My neighbour has just named twin boys Cooper and Colley.

Amongst friends in the last year there's been: Ossian, Glenn, Joseph and James for boys and Lorna and Janey for girls.

I agree with Nancy66 that Shoreditch arty types are starting to use names like Jean, and Maggie (in fact, any names that have songs about them!).

Jean - AC/DC
Maggie - Rod Stewart
Mary - Bruce Springsteen
Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners
Donna - Joan Baez

redcarnations · 19/05/2011 14:16

Thesecondcoming - I know! I found it very hard to keep quiet about that one :)

Her older one also has a name beginning with 'c'. Mail will be a nightmare.

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 19/05/2011 14:56

My mum's name was Jean, I always liked it.

lottiejenkins · 19/05/2011 15:10

When i had my Wilfred nearly fifteen years ago there wasnt any others for miles around. My poor mother went very quiet at the end of the phone when i told her what we had called him then she managed to say "I'll have to get used to that name!!" My reply?? "Yes you will Mum wont you!!!" She's never said another word about his name since and he so suits his name! (pics on profile)

valiumbandwitch · 19/05/2011 15:41

I think that obviously pretty pretty names are on the way out. Millie, Ruby etc. All very pretty. STronger sounding versions of these names will start appearing. And names that don't end in -ia or -a.

Mildred? Winifred? Dorothy? Maud?

For boys things like Victor, Howard, and perhaps other classics that aren't royal, such as Richard.

Names like Reuben and Imogen which have been suggested are in the top #100 and are completely mainstream already surely???

polyhymnia · 19/05/2011 16:13

Having been called Dorothy as a second name and rapidly eliminated it as a young adult, am absolutely amazed it's making a comeback. Just sounds ugly to me.

pink4ever · 19/05/2011 16:14

Oi stop hating on Agatha-is my fave girls name ever but dh said not a chance in hellSad. We gave our dd what I thought was an unusual name but now becoming more popularAngry.

Selks · 19/05/2011 16:17

AppleyEverAfter · 19/05/2011 18:10

Poor Wilfred, that's all I can say!
