Lara and Lola

KATTT · 18/05/2011 14:05

hellojude - you sure have a lot of kids!

AngelDelightIsFab · 18/05/2011 14:20

Please not another Oliver, Alfie, Harry, Lucy, Thomas, or Sofie! I tried to pick names for my kids that me and my husband liked, firstmost, but also that were a bit more unusual...i.e. not usually heard in this country. Must have been ok names as one aquaintence has named her daughter after mine!

jennymac · 18/05/2011 14:25

Oh no - really fancied Esme after reading Maggie O'Farrell's book - The Disappearance of Esme Lennox - might have to rethink now if it is going to be an "in" name.

carocaro · 18/05/2011 14:54

Maya - loadsa them all over the show!

AppleyEverAfter · 18/05/2011 14:58

I've read that book Jennymac, but is it pronounced Es-may or Es-mee? Brill book BTW.

Girls is still all the Ava- Emily- Sophie analogues as mentioned. Esme makes me think of Granny Weatherwax.
Small boys it is Oliver x3, then Daniel, Quinten, Max, Felix.

ClipArt · 18/05/2011 15:32

Analogue? What's the digital verson Confused

ellangirl · 18/05/2011 16:32

I love loads of the names on this thread, but I'm going to keep it in mind if I have another child so I can avoid all of them Grin. I have a horror of there being 15 kids in school with the same name as my child. Hope I am not being too unreasonable!

rachel1970 · 18/05/2011 16:37

No not unreasonable at all. The whole point of naming something or someone is to identify them as uniquely as possible.

Mrsmackie · 18/05/2011 16:38

In Manchester it's Eva, Ava, Isabelle that seem to be really popular among the girls. Have also recently met three Clementines in the space of a couple of weeks so maybe that's another one that is becoming popular

legallyblond · 18/05/2011 16:39

I don't really see the point of "avoiding" the popular names. If you like a name, use it! I am a jennifer... apparently in the top 3 in the year I was born, but there was never another in my class. Apart from the top couple of names, the more popular names don't amount to that many born per 1000 babies if you actually look at the stats. Plus, as I said, I think MN can be misleading! DD's name is apparently super popular according to MN - I have never met another baby with her name, and we know a lot of babies what with NCT, baby groups, church and DH's primary school.....

PANCHEY · 18/05/2011 16:46

On trend names here are Orla, Erin, Agatha and Matilda, for boys, Albert, George, Indy.

I have not met any Clementines. Taking up on the point about not avoiding popular names, as a child I really loved being one of four with the same name at school. However it must have been a nightmare for teachers since we all sat together.

UrsulaBuffay · 18/05/2011 16:47

Also remember that a name may be popular in a certain region, but when they grow up your DC may move around the country-even the world, so it doesn't have to be 'oh we can't call it x that's really popular round here'.

madamelapointe · 18/05/2011 16:57

That's why you're best to refer to the national stats to get a more accurate picture of popularity.

ellangirl · 18/05/2011 17:20

Yes to be fair my DS's name does appear in the top 100 for scotland where I moved from, but not where I live now. I would never give a child a name from the top 10, and preferably not the top 100, but that's my personal choice. Perhaps I wish my name had been more unusual! I have a friend who deliberately names from the top 20, so that her children can't be teased because of their name, as she was. Each to their own!

Thirstysomething · 18/05/2011 18:22

Lots of Lilas appearing around here. Also Jago (Cornish for James). We quite liked Jago four years ago, being west country, but my mum wouldn't let me have it because she said it was too "Notting Hill"... Confused
Gutted that Wilf is getting popular... still haven't had a boy (trying hard!) and always thought that would be a good old fashioned, but unusual name!
Anyway, you can't predict these things, and in some ways I regret DD2's unusual name because am constantly being asked how to spell/pronounce it! Even her grandparents get it wrong on birthday cards...

Minnieheehee · 18/05/2011 19:17

We are looking at names (due august) and am desperate to avoid 'on trend' or trendy names... great thread - if a bit disappointed my favourite one is appearing :(

Lonnie · 18/05/2011 19:24

For girls Elsa and Betzy

for boys
Dexter and Arlo (ive come accross 4 in the last 3 months)

ClipArt · 18/05/2011 19:34

They can't all get to number one at the same time though Minnieheehee :)

patsido · 18/05/2011 19:38

I think the Hazel, Evelyn type names are coming up - my parents generation but not quite as 'plain' as Julie & Debbie :)
