CheerfulYank - you got it! We named our Esme after 'For Esme with love and squalor'

EightiesChick · 20/05/2011 09:28

I think Reese Witherspoon started the Ava trend - her daughter is about 10/12 now. Mylene's not quite as cutting edge as she likes to think Grin

EightiesChick · 20/05/2011 09:32

It's hard to say what will be the next on-trend name as names like Zac (thanks Elton!) are very popular now but we're trying to predict the next move.

Celeb names can be trend-setting but they have to not be too wacky for that to work. Can't see Moroccan catching on for that reason.

I've got a horrible feeling Nancy is going to get even more popular - we have one and she's 4.

Round here, Theo, Isla, Oscar and Seth are very popular.

CheerfulYank · 20/05/2011 19:01

I love Iris. :(

cece · 20/05/2011 21:34

mrsjohnsimm - there are loads of Esme's around here!

MelinaM · 20/05/2011 21:43

I used to love Isla when it was virtually unheard of, I blame Ellen Rives and that Lampard moron!!! ...and the rise in popularity of the actress Isla Fisher of course!

I think Nancy and Florence will become more popular due to the prominence of 'Dave and SamCam's' children ..isn't one named Arthur too?

BettyButterknife · 21/05/2011 14:33

I think:
Theo is the new Noah
Billy is the new Jack
Kitty is the new Ruby
Cleo is the new Lola

sweetkitty · 21/05/2011 14:57

A few people asked me if DS was named Jacob after Twilight, suppose I could have another DS called Edward!

Round here it's Emma really popular plus all the usual Eva/Eve/Ella/Ellie/Avas

Recents babies Rachel, Brooke, Melissa, Florence, John (unusual!!!) Joshua, Ben, Michael, Eva, Lucy

scarlettsmummy2 · 21/05/2011 16:11

I read that esme is short for emerald. I thought I was being original but obviously not!

fifitot · 21/05/2011 17:59

I love Dora.

Mabel? Betty? We have a Rita and a Stella round here too!

Keeping the Salinger link going.............Seymour and Holden.

UrsulaBuffay · 21/05/2011 20:44

I would love a Mabel, I think it's a gorgeous name.

mathanxiety · 21/05/2011 21:55

I think surnamey names for boys are on the way in:
Harrison
Jackson
Holden (agree with Fifitot)
Everett
Elliott
Emmet
Sawyer
Cooper

as well as for girls:
Kendall
Paige
Peyton
Paisley

mathanxiety · 21/05/2011 21:55

And Marshall, for boys.

Lauralastic · 21/05/2011 22:20

You know it is OK if there are 4 children in the same class with the same name, "it won't take part of their soul or anything"
Because its not like having a name is meant to identify you as an individual or anything. Apparently.
Grin

tummytickler · 21/05/2011 22:20

math - what about Mortimer? Do you lump that one in with the others?

EsmeWeatherwax · 21/05/2011 22:43

Oh lord, I didn't know there was an Esme Cullen in Twilight...I can cross that one off my list then, given my surname...

mathanxiety · 21/05/2011 23:09

I think it might be little cartoonish.

sonniebonnie · 22/05/2011 10:50

"You know it is OK if there are 4 children in the same class with the same name"

Yes of course it is 'ok' but imo the whole point of naming something or someone is to IDENTIFY them. If their first names are identical, then they'll need to add another identifyer such as initial of adjective. It is also a pain for the teachers Smile.

Lauralastic · 22/05/2011 13:50

Thank you sonnie.
My post was very tongue in cheek, it was the response I recieved when I said I wanted a name for my child that wasn't the same as anyone else in the class.
This is a very useful thread to see what peoples views on the next name trend. Thanks OP.

legallyblond · 22/05/2011 16:23

I see what people mean about not wanting names of which there are many in a class... but the most popular names aren't always the ones that end up being multiples at a school.... it can be random! DH teaches year 3. In his class there are:

2 x Mavis
3 x Cameron
2 x Chante and
2 x Leah

Also 2 x Grace and 2 x Rebecca, which are, admittedly, popular names.

How random is that!?! He did say that names in this class are uncannily the same given they are so "out there".

MamaLazarou · 22/05/2011 19:02

Just because everyone else is doing it doesn't mean it's ok. Remember bumbags?

UrsulaBuffay · 22/05/2011 20:47

Lol I thought you meant a name 'bumbags' Grin

hellojude · 22/05/2011 20:49

Lauralastic your welcome Wink I agree with BettyButterknife Kitty is going to go through the roof..which is a shame as I quite like it!

Just out of interest has anyone come across a Lara? For some reason I thought it might be a popular alternative to all the Lola's and Ava's etc.
