Nameless 2wk old DS!

OK so DS is just over 2 weeks old and so far is called boy! We've been through every name registered in the last 2 years and still can't find one that jumps out at us as 'the one'. In fact we're rapidly approaching the point where we don't feel the need for him to have a name at all

DD has suggested 'Grandad' or 'Tigermonster' and tempted as I am by the second in particular I'm not sure either will quite cut it in later life!

It's all complicated by the fact that DH has a long surname that is hard to match. Similar to Blenkinsop, but more Germanic.

I think we're pretty much down to 2 names:

Francis, probably with Frank and (possibly when little) Frankie as nn, and
Felix, no nn.

My main reservations are: Francis is a bit wet, Frank is a bit 'old man', which makes me worry it will date as the old man names are so popular at the moment, and Frankie is another 'ie' name like Charlie, Archie, Alfie etc, which I'm not keen on.

Felix is obviously a cat/catfood, but tbh this aspect doesn't really bother me. After all Thomas is a tank engine! What does worry me about Felix is that the only thing that stops it being another Max or Oscar is the catfood connotation. Plus I'm hoping to have William as a middle name, which definitely goes better with Francis.

I just can't decide what suits him. He's fair/reddish haired at the moment and likely to be bald when he's older!

There's a slight possibility we may be over thinking this! Help!!

I know a little boy called Franklin who's nn is Frank and also a V V dishy 25 year old called Frank who isn't at all wet.

I don't put Frankie in the same bracket as Alfie et al. I think it sounds much more substantial somehow. i also know a MN with a way cool Frankie so like it even more due to him

I have a Felix so obv love the name, it's seemed to have worked ok for him so far . have only met/know of one other.

our other fave boys names are/were Caspar and Caspian. The former wouldn't work in Germany due to the clown connotations. if dd hadn't been a girl she would have been Caspar William funnily enough.

I like Marcus and Rafe but they don't make me swoon.

Franklin is lovely. Actually, William Francis is really lovely.

Took us ages to name DS. My DM thought we HAD the name but were not telling her when DS was a bump just to spite her. .

We ended up naming him after one of his Grandfathers thru sheer desperation as we had to go and register him, and it is perfect. :)

Francis, called Frank is nice. And he will be the only one about for ages until it comes back in fashion. (which it will).

If it helps, when we eventually got to a shortlist we then did a little powerpoint show running though all combinations of first name, then with surname and with middle name and with nicknames and randomly displaying them which we watched for ages (a few days!) until we could decide which we thought looked/sounded best, we felt familiar/comfortable with! Is that too much? Even then we couldn't agree so we took turns saying which we didn't want until we got down to two. Then I got to pick as I'd done all the hard work!

at Boy(de). Apparently one of my colleagues knows a couple who called their child 'Boy' so it does happen

I think Rafe is a proper name, but I knew (and disliked) someone who had it as a surname at university, so I'm not sure I can get past that!

Still can't decide though - think we may end up tossing a coin in the registry office at this rate

On the subject of 'Boy', I have heard the legend on here of a child called 'Boy' and when his little brother came along they named him 'Newboy'

I ahven't read all of this so I don't know if he's named yet. But TBH I don't like Francis or Felix, they're both a bit wet. Apologies to everyone who has children with these names, of course it isn't personal.

Why not go for something a bit more different. I like Rueben. It means behold a son. Someone else suggested Isaac too which means mirthful. So Rueben Isaac would be Behold a mirthful son .... LOL!

Felix is lovely, as is Max. Red hair instantly made me think of Rory, Ruaridh. What about Rufus?

If you have Germanic overtones is there a German name you might fancy, I dunno, Hans, Fritz or something? Magnus is another great one.

Not so keen at all on Francis, to be honest, or any of its nick names.

I like traditional but not really old fashioned names, things like Peter or Donald. Or what about Michael?

My 17 year old son has suggested Reuben or Jonah.

What about Jericho? Short form Jerry.

And if you're doubtful, remember that it has the cutest shortening ever. Which I will tell you if you promise to use it.

I love Francis, Frank and Frankie. I'd've loved to have used any of them for DS2 but our surname begins with 'F' and I personally am not keen on alliterative names and also, DH works for probation and had met some 'clients' called Frank and it put him off. But I think it's a fine name in all its forms.

Ah - Patrick. I love that name. So gutted not to be able to use it as a first name... :(

Oh, can I second, or third, Patrick, lovely name.

And don;t forget the cutest shortening ever.....
