Nameless 2wk old DS!

OK so DS is just over 2 weeks old and so far is called boy! We've been through every name registered in the last 2 years and still can't find one that jumps out at us as 'the one'. In fact we're rapidly approaching the point where we don't feel the need for him to have a name at all Grin

DD has suggested 'Grandad' or 'Tigermonster' and tempted as I am by the second in particular I'm not sure either will quite cut it in later life!

It's all complicated by the fact that DH has a long surname that is hard to match. Similar to Blenkinsop, but more Germanic.

I think we're pretty much down to 2 names:

Francis, probably with Frank and (possibly when little) Frankie as nn, and
Felix, no nn.

My main reservations are: Francis is a bit wet, Frank is a bit 'old man', which makes me worry it will date as the old man names are so popular at the moment, and Frankie is another 'ie' name like Charlie, Archie, Alfie etc, which I'm not keen on.

Felix is obviously a cat/catfood, but tbh this aspect doesn't really bother me. After all Thomas is a tank engine! What does worry me about Felix is that the only thing that stops it being another Max or Oscar is the catfood connotation. Plus I'm hoping to have William as a middle name, which definitely goes better with Francis.

I just can't decide what suits him. He's fair/reddish haired at the moment and likely to be bald when he's older!

There's a slight possibility we may be over thinking this! Help!!

Love the name Francis - St Francis of Assisi is a great namesake if you love the natural world.

How about Myles instead of Miles?

I very much like Benjamin. If I have a boy, it'll be his middle name as my partner's less keen though.

I like Benjamin, but DH doesn't. Benedict is/was on our shortlist, but DH doesn't think he looks like a Ben!

I think one of the problems is that all the really nice classic boys names are extremely popular at the moment (presumably because they are so nice) and I ideally would like him to have a less popular but not too 'unusual' name. My name is uncommon but not unusual and I like that I'm usually the only one of me that people know

Yes, the problem with Benjamin and Benedict is that they will inevitably end up as Ben...

I know. Why am I finding this so hard? With DD we just picked a name and that was that.

St Francis is a good namesake for us as both DH and I work in the environment sector

Francis William sounds fantastic to me. I also have a massive soft spot for Rufus (and I don't think its solely a redhead's name). How about Laurence (Laurie as a nn) ?

What about Barnaby? I love this name so does my sister who is due in a few weeks and we were all set with Barnaby and her DH has changed his mind, which is a shame as in our house he is already Barnaby and always will be!! Grin Or Kit?

It sounds like you like Francis so just go for it.

But you do have another what 4 weeks to decide.

We have chosen our names already and I am so happy got 8 weeks to go, we are not changing our minds, I was driving my DH mad with suggestions all day long and in the end he came roudn to one of my suggestions. I am so happy, cause I know I would have ended up in your situ.

Rowan is actually my favourite name, but DH has firmly vetoed it as too girly! I do like Rufus and Laurence was on our original list, but every Laurence I know has ended up being called Loz

What about Franklin, NN Frank? Way cooler than Francis. And Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Benjamin Franklin are both good namesakes. I think given the current 'set' of names Frank will not be seen as an old man name, so will fit well within his generation without dating so quickly as it's less popular.

Ooh, I love Franklin... Rowan or Franklin then?

Rowan Atkinson isn't girly! (Row like row a boat, not Row as in argue)

What about Rupert? I love it and you never hear it
I like Hugo and Henry too, and out of the original names I'd probably go with Frank (Francis)

I think that finding the perfect boys' name is a bit like searching for the holy grail. They're either cutesy old man, traditional and a bit dull, totally bizarre or very 'on trend'. It's a toughie.

Overthinking it is completely natural. It's a big decision and you want to get it right. That said, he'll be fine whether you call him John or Adolf. Would it be worth writing out a definitive shortlist and then giving yourselves a couple of weeks away from it?

FWIW, I'd add my vote to Magnus, Angus or Fergus (spotting a theme here). Also, love Rupert.

Congratulations on your new son Smile. Hope you're all doing ok.

I think DH finds Rowan Atkinson too odd looking to be able to contemplate the name!

Hugo to me is a dark square-jawed chap from romantic fiction and adorable and snuggly as DS is, he doesn't look like he's going to be the dark square jawed type!

I do quite like Franklin, but haven't been sure about it. No surprise there as i'm clearly not sure about anything Grin

DH is suggesting Marcus, Frasier and Rafe this evening.

I like Fraser. It sounds like you have quite similar tastes to me. DS ended up being Fergus (which I know you've said your not keen on) but other names on the list were:

Rufus
Laurence
Dominic
Flynn
Fraser
Barnaby
Gilbert
George
