DD2 is a few days old, and people are constantly asking for a name, as it took me almost 6 weeks to name ds. Had a name chosen, but not sure it suits her now, was going with Elizabeth nn Betsy.
Everyone thinks im being silly saying she'll grow into her name, but changed dd1 name by deed poll as her name never fitted.
She looks like a Matilda to me, but am worried how popular it is, esp in trendy areas of london.
How popular are these names? and which do you prefer? Want her named by saturday so I can stop avoiding the phone, lol
Mylist is -
Betsy
Matilda
Martha
Jemima
Kitty (not cathrine!)

If popularity is a big issue for you, you might find this useful www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_population/2009-girls.xls. If you go to tab 5 it lists all names registered in England and Wales in 2009 and frequency. So there were just under 1,300 Matilda's in the country, only 780 Martha's etc. Nicknames are obviously trickier. You don't know how many Elizabeth's will be Kitty in addition to the actual Kitty's, but it might help you...

Carrotsandcelery · 11/03/2011 12:40

I know of one Jemima and have not encountered any children with the other names in RL. I used to be a teacher too FWIW.

ShowOfHands · 11/03/2011 12:45

I have a Mathilda and know of no others locally. When I had her though, 2 other women on my MN antenatal thread had Matildas too. Mine's a Tilda. I've never met another Tilda but there are lots of Tillys. I hear the name quite a lot (don't like it at all).

Betsy- 0
Martha- 2 at dd's preschool
Jemima- 0
Kitty- 2 live locally

RubyFakeNails · 11/03/2011 13:03

I live in a currently 'trendy' area of London, I know a 2 Marthas, Betsy will be forever connected to Denise Van Outen as far as I'm concerned so has lost its shine in my eyes. Kitty reminds me of terribly posh boarding schools and kings road types as does Jemima but I also think of Jemima Khan.

Someone mentioned Matilda as in the Roald Dahl character, my eldest daughter loved her and spent almost a year furious I had not called her Matilda. Its a great name and a great story to be connected to.

headfairy · 11/03/2011 13:08

I know one Matilda (she's called Tilly), and one Kitty. I love Matilda, would have been dd's name but dh hated it. My grandmother is Mathilde (French)

Tuschinski · 11/03/2011 13:53

just one Matilda

CharlieBoo · 11/03/2011 14:22

Not keen on betsy.... Love love love Martha and Jemima....

Janus · 11/03/2011 14:30

I have a Tilly (Tilly on birth cert). Martha is in our top 3 if this next one is a girl, have only met one before. Have only known one Kitty. No Betsy or Jemima although our dog is Bessie so close!!
I would find it hard to say which I prefer as they are all very much my taste. I find Betsy so, so cute but maybe when older it wouldn't suit so much??
Good luck choosing, let us know which one you go for.

FriskyMare · 11/03/2011 14:36

Betsy-1Gorgeous name!
Matilda-4
Martha-1
Jemima-1
Kitty- only my very ancient great aunt! Love the name though!

ThisFeelsWeird · 11/03/2011 14:58

I wonder if you all know the same Jemima?!

I'm really surprised that everyone seems to know one. I don't know any...

iwouldgoouttonight · 11/03/2011 15:04

I like all the names on your list (that probably doesn't help you!). I know of one Martha and one Matilda but none of the others.

If you call her Elizabeth she then has the option of several shortened versions if she wants to choose herself when she's older.

3rdnparty · 11/03/2011 15:05

W London -
1 Kitty -
0 Betsy - but a few Elizabeths -lilibet/beth/betty
0 Martha under 5 but a couple of teenage
3 Jemimas
1- Matilda shes 2 and usually a Tilly

Matilda and Martha both faves of mine and on my list but had a boy! not a fan of Kitty - unless a nn of Katharine as not sure its a strong adult name- fails the PM/Judge test Grin

dancemum · 11/03/2011 15:19

Betsy - 1 Elizabeth (Lizzy) 1 Elisabeth (Lissie)
Matilda - none
Martha - 2, one lives in Portugal though
Jemima - none
Kitty (not cathrine!) - 1 aged 5 mos.

eileenslightlytotheleft · 11/03/2011 15:33

Betsy - 0 (would have as nn and name her Elizabeth)
Matilda - 1
Martha - 1
Jemima - 1
Kitty (not cathrine!) - 1 (would name her Katherine and have as nn)

fizzyliftinggas · 11/03/2011 15:47

I know no one with any of those names, i like them all, betsy esp

grumpypants · 11/03/2011 16:04

I'm wondering if any of the 'known' Betsy's are my Betsy - at secondary school? Kent?

itisntreallyme · 11/03/2011 16:09

I live in East London which I suppose might be considered trendy...

Betsy - 0
Matilda - 1 (mine! plus two Tillys)
Martha - 1
Jemima - 0
Kitty - 0

Matilda is a great name as is Martha. Betsy is ok. Jemima is a puddle duck (and not a very bright one!) and Kitty is a cat. IMO.

2babyblues · 11/03/2011 16:17

Out of children I know one Matilda, 1 Jemima and an Elizabeth who is called Beth. I know a Martha who is in her early 30s.

I love Kitty (only know one - husband's gran) and I love Betsy.

mathanxiety · 11/03/2011 17:52

Betsy - (1 but aged 21; she has been Betsy since DD1 first met her at age 4)
Matilda -- 1
Martha -- 6 aged 10 and under and one about age 21 so 7 in all (none of them know each other afaik)
Jemima -- 0
Kitty -- 0 under age 87; 2 aged 87 and older.

lovenest · 11/03/2011 17:56

I know of 2 Matildas both know as Tilly. It is a fab name and if it suits her then go for it! I like Elizabeth too as she could be Eliza, Beth, Betsy etc... good luck. BTW how old was your DS when you changed via deed poll? Was it a hassle? Did you get used to the new name quickly? I may have the same issue soon!
