DD2 is a few days old, and people are constantly asking for a name, as it took me almost 6 weeks to name ds. Had a name chosen, but not sure it suits her now, was going with Elizabeth nn Betsy.
Everyone thinks im being silly saying she'll grow into her name, but changed dd1 name by deed poll as her name never fitted.
She looks like a Matilda to me, but am worried how popular it is, esp in trendy areas of london.
How popular are these names? and which do you prefer? Want her named by saturday so I can stop avoiding the phone, lol
Mylist is -
Betsy
Matilda
Martha
Jemima
Kitty (not cathrine!)

"she is 7 yrs old, though"

So not that far different in age to closer in age to OP's child (who is over 5), and presumably no longer in need of being named.

I usually do the 'career test' on names, especially girls names. i.e. I imagine that a high flying lawyer or CEO of a company having that name. If "this is our CEO, [insert name]" doesn't sound right, I don't choose it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting my children to grow up with huge ambitions. As long as they're happy I don't care whether they're a checkout assistant or a high court judge. But I wouldn't give my daughter a name which might limit her or conjour the wrong image on a CV...

Anyways, Kitty and Betsy don't pass my made-up 'career test' IMHO, I just can't see a Kitty being a cabinet minister or a corporate SVP, but the other names do pass my test.

(Feel free to mock me for this stupid test... I'm sure I'm being something-ist but I do have good intentions)

Sorry, Matulda should say 2, not 12. Sorry for that shock! Lol

Matilda - 0
Martha - 1. Wales
Jemima - 1 American in London
Kitty (not cathrine!) - 0

If I came across Kitty, I'd think it was a nickname rather than full name. Although these days anything goes. It's sweet.

Can I ask the recent posters, who have perhaps seen the posts on this page at least, pointing out that this is a ZOMBIE THREAD, why they think the mother of a 5yo is still counting numbers of children with the names on her shortlist from years ago?

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 16/05/2016 07:57

I know children called:

Elizabeth 1
Betsy 1
Matilda 1
Jemima 0 (love that name!)
Kitty 0 - possibly a celebrity baby though ...Jamie Oliver? Giles Coren? Can't remember!

I think all these names are popular , or on the cusp of becoming popular. You probably have to face the fact you have fairly populist taste (I do too!) and just pick the one you think the nicest.

Roomba · 16/05/2016 08:01

I know 2 Matildas (was my 1st choice if DCs had been girls too), 1 Martha (I now think it's nicer than Matilda) and one Kitty (but she is a Katherine). Zero of the other names. They are all nice though!

I didn't notice that it was a zombie thread. But presumably the replies might be helpful for other people considering names. The OP's not the only person to have ever named a child.

1horatio · 16/05/2016 12:46

Matilda: 2
Martha: 1
Kitty: 2 girls with the nn Kitty (but it's Catherine/Katherine on the birth certificate, so no idea if that "counts"...)
