I believe the mushroom toxins pass out of a person’s body after a few days, so by the time they died there wouldn’t be any left to test for. (Happy to stand corrected if this is wrong, but I recall reading this somewhere in the coverage.)

Yes that is correct. And in fact two of the victims in this case didn't test positive to the toxins (although they only tested their blood and not their urine where it tends to be detected for a longer period). However they can clinically deduce mushroom toxicity by the impact on the organs and other evidence (such as the positive toxins test in the other victims and in the food).

If you’ve been missing your mushroom content, the ABC published a story outlining the evidence that was ruled inadmissible, as well as moments from the trial that the jurors were not privy to.

You beat me to it, @TerrorAustralis.

I've read the Age and Australian versions, which are behind paywalls. Fascinating stuff.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 08/08/2025 08:36

I don’t think she has been sentenced yet. When is that likely to happen?

FeralWoman · 08/08/2025 08:59

Two days of a pre-sentencing hearing is being held towards the end of the month. Not sure about the actual sentencing.

velvetandsatin · 08/08/2025 09:05

Crumbs, it's all coming out now. Mindbending stuff.

This article includes a 20 minute video of her police interview. She's so sullen.

The pre-sentencing hearing will include the reading of victim impact statements.

Does anyone else think Simon Patterson looks like a less fun version of Tom Gleeson?

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 08/08/2025 20:46

Who among us can put our hands on out hearts and say that we've never asked for a photo of a mushroom to be identified as we were scared it had poisoned our cat, even though we've never had a cat? I must have accidently done that at least three times since lunch.

Dustyblue · 09/08/2025 00:56

I really feel for Simon. Imagine thinking someone might actually be trying to poison you? Let alone the woman who looks after your kids most of the time.

Although I think I wouldn't stopped eating her food a bit sooner than he did.....

My DH said that last night! I hadn’t seen any resemblance at all but now I do.

I’m part way through watching the 20 minute police interview. Nothing she says sounds sincere.
