Welcome sewists new and old.
Before the break we were losing all self control. Fabric buying is a separate hobby. No judgement here. Pop in and share your wins and woes but most of all, please tell me what the heck to do with any current sewing project because I have no idea what i'm doing. Thankyouplease. Smile

I just want to say thank you to whoever recommended Closet Core patterns . I have been looking for a dress pattern for my daughter , and the Elodie Wrap Dress is perfect . I have only had chance today to print out all 46 pages 🙄...And then I need to measure to sort out pattern adjustments , which will probably be a full bust , and a long torso one too . Material hunting with daughter when we get the chance to go together sometime in the next couple of weeks . Must get my twin baby granddaughters dungarees out of the way first Smile

PickAChew · 23/07/2023 23:53

I'd tissue fit first @bookbook as closet core are drafted.for giants! Lovely high rise bottoms for me but the cleavage has too much plunge for me and cropped pants are full length!

GnomeDePlume · 24/07/2023 06:12

Sounds like good activity over the weekend! I managed to get my shirt sewn up. Buttonholes and buttons to do then it's finished.

Trousers next - I have a bolt end of canvas left from when I made dining room curtains. So long as I don't hang around in the dining room too much hopefully no one will notice I match the soft furnishings!

GnomeDePlume · 24/07/2023 06:35

@Brefugee that is some good productivity!

Is there a risk that lining the tshirt dress will make it too heavy and not work with the tshirt fabric?

Brefugee · 24/07/2023 10:00

The t-shirt is quite a thick one (band shirt) ant the fabric is quire light so a lining won't teally add much.

Tbh if it were for me I wouldn't bother but DD is less braxen

SBAM · 24/07/2023 10:03

@Brefugee I assume you’re thinking of lining the skirt portion not the T-shirt? My main worry would be the weight of the skirt and how that would pull on the T-shirt - I might consider adding elastic to the waist seam on the inside to provide a bit more support.

123ZYX · 24/07/2023 10:16

Does anyone have a good place to buy buttons? I just want a few matching buttons, not bags of random buttons where none match each other

SBAM · 24/07/2023 10:33

@123ZYX I’ve used Totally buttons in the past, but eBay is great for haberdashery - be as specific as you can with your search eg ‘pink glitter buttons’ and there will be so many options.

@SBAM fabulous, thank you

CrimsonAlligator · 24/07/2023 16:22

I’m so annoyed after both my Ogden camis came out of the wash like this. At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, it’s taken away all my enthusiasm for making more things.

I can’t even work out what happened, as the seams were finished properly and fully encased. So annoyed 😭

SBAM · 24/07/2023 16:46

Oh no @CrimsonAlligator ! What fabric are they made from? I’ve found viscose prone to damage along seam lines - I tend to wash most of my handmade things in those mesh laundry bags now to protect them a bit.

kittykarate · 24/07/2023 16:58

Oh no I had that with a viscose top I made in my early days, the double turned hem seemed to spontaneously unravel itself through the stitching and I didn't have enough material left to fix it. Some fabric is just suicidal.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/07/2023 17:25

I made a top, I think I went a bit overboard with the sleeves so I'll shorten them a couple of inches. Otherwise it's pretty good I think, a bit childish because I used left over fabric from making my granddaughter's dress but nice and cool for when it stops flipping raining and the sun comes back. I might take the hem up a bit too, I usually prefer hip length and this is a bit lower.

Jins · 24/07/2023 17:37

Suicidal viscose strikes again 😥

Viscose and I have learned to treat each other with care after a few similar disasters. I always double seam high stress areas now. For shoulder straps I occasionally use the overlocker method but more often than not I trim very lightly, turn it to the right side then open the seam as best I can and press it down the centre of the back face. Tbh I usually topstitch the edges as well.

Today has gone well. The bodice is 90% done

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar lovely top, really swishy in case we see warm weather again

@Jins lovely fabric and bodice

NutellaEllaElla · 24/07/2023 18:17

Oh no @CrimsonAlligator that's horrible. I didn't know about the reputation of viscose, but i was wondering why my lovely green wrap dress was coming apart at the seams and i guess that is it. Damn.

Fab! Well done @BlackAmericanoNoSugar

Beautiful bodice @Jins

Just hoping the skirt part of it doesn’t let me down

I love the colours in that top @BlackAmericanoNoSugar. The sleeves look good to me but then the sleeves in my current make use as much fabric as the rest of the dress put together. You can’t beat a statement sleeve 🤣

NutellaEllaElla · 24/07/2023 21:48

Would people be interested in perhaps sharing the reasons behind their names? I'm so curious why you're called @CrimsonAlligator, @Jins, @SBAM, @dubyalass etc. No pressure of course especially if they are too revealing or something but I'm nosey 😁

I think I can figure out who is a coffee fan, and I love the irreverance of @GnomeDePlume. I have an image of a Marshall arts cat when I see @kittykarate's name.

I'm just a chocolate spread addict.

dubyalass · 24/07/2023 21:55

Mine's quite boring - I am from somewhere that begins with W, George W Bush was nicknamed Dubya because of how he pronounced it, hence Dubyalass. GnomeDePlume is a brilliant name.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/07/2023 22:00

My name is just going to remain an unknowable mystery, sorry.😁

Jins · 24/07/2023 22:17

When I first joined MN, back when it was all fields etc etc, I used my real life nickname. Hullygully started shortening it to Jins so I ended up namechanging. Not very exciting I’m afraid.

CrimsonAlligator · 25/07/2023 00:25

My username is the first two words of a song. I change usernames from time to time and usually find inspiration in the opening lines of random songs. So not the most exciting story, I’m afraid.

The fabric I used in my now doomed camis was indeed viscose (viscose challis to be precise). I’m still so annoyed, but by the sound of it it was likely to be the fabric and not my own handy work that caused the problem. That is really reassuring, so thank you all for the comments.

The first half of your dress is looking very promising jins. Lovely colour too!

InMySpareTime · 25/07/2023 06:10

My username was from when the DCs were little and I had a lot on, so anything added to the list of things was something I'd get round to in my spare time.
Now the DCs are adults and I have a chronic health condition I have nothing but spare time.
Username works either way.

Brefugee · 25/07/2023 08:01

alas mine comes from Brexit. I have lived in an EU country for most of my life, and was perfectly fine until i (and i realise this name could appear insulting to some) a Brexit-Refugee.
