Welcome sewists new and old.
Before the break we were losing all self control. Fabric buying is a separate hobby. No judgement here. Pop in and share your wins and woes but most of all, please tell me what the heck to do with any current sewing project because I have no idea what i'm doing. Thankyouplease. Smile

Also the leopard print makes it a bit Miami Beach cougar resort wear.

InMySpareTime · 22/07/2023 17:25

A chunky belt with a big buckle would bring it in at the waist and give it definition.

Chewbecca · 22/07/2023 17:40

My Sauvie sundress looked like that too, I cut it up into an Ogden cami. I like your material and think it would look great as separates.

I finished my declic top. Really quite pleased with it, very wearable. I skipped a couple of steps I didn’t understand but think I got away with it!

Two patterns ordered for printing today - True Bias Emerson Crop Pant and short and Sew Over It Ultimate Trousers. Time to try making a short or trouser & using a zip I think which will probably be tricky but worth it if I can succeed.

NutellaEllaElla · 22/07/2023 18:21

It drapes nicely though

@kittykarate Love the fabric. Think the shoulders need to be a little narrower which will help the shape. I can't wear a scoop neck shape so I'd need to make it a v-neck!

SBAM · 22/07/2023 19:26

I’ve been wearing my Declic top (finished last night) today. I like it a lot, though I think I may do things slightly differently if I make another - the armholes are so low you can see almost all my bra, and I’d be tempted to hem the sleeves and bottom hem with a single turn instead of two 7mm turns.

That looks lovely @SBAM , would it be hard to adjust the arm holes and sleeves?

OP posts:
SBAM · 22/07/2023 19:46

@NutellaEllaElla I don’t think so, it’s a pretty interesting construction, you hem the sleeves before French seaming the side seam and the sides are pretty straight, so I reckon I could just sew further up the side to make the armholes more appropriate.

Jins · 22/07/2023 20:03

Declic just moved up my to do list. Lovely.

Shame about the dress @kittykarate. It’s a style I find hard to wear and always look for V necks if I can.

SBAM · 22/07/2023 20:25

@kittykarate it is a shame you don’t like the dress. I do think it looks a bit big for you across the shoulder, and also a very tricky shape to take in at the waist without impacting the lovely swoosh of the hem. Would altering the neckline to show collarbones and wearing it with a belt help?

NutellaEllaElla · 22/07/2023 20:47

Life admin is really getting in the way of my sewing lately. So frustrating.

GnomeDePlume · 22/07/2023 22:01

@SBAM Love the top.

Thank you for the suggestions on things to make. I will check with DD to see what she thinks will sell.

Been working on another shirt today. It's a pattern I have made several times before yet still managed to top stitch on the wrong side of the front. Lots of unpicking!

@NutellaEllaElla that is frustrating. I hope you are able to get your feet clear soon.

FletchingStraight · 23/07/2023 16:35

@SBAM that top is really lovely. Hope you find a fix for your armholes.

Quick question. Should I pre wash my bamboo batting for quilting? I've got my cotton all washed & ironed when it just occurred to me. It doesn't say on the site I bought it from.

At least I can start cutting out my fabric

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/07/2023 16:44

@FletchingStraight I don't think wadding/batting of any sort is particularly washable by itself. I suspect it might turn into a clumpy mess. I've never done it, but then I usually don't prewash my quilting fabric either. After a quick Google it seems that bamboo wadding doesn't shrink as much as cotton does, so I probably wouldn't bother in your case.

I really like the way that your top sits @SBAM . Is that double gauze?

FletchingStraight · 23/07/2023 16:57

Brilliant thanks @BlackAmericanoNoSugar I did think it would just meld together if I even tried a hand wash never mind the machine.

So silly to be this excited to start my first quilt!

SBAM · 23/07/2023 17:00

@FletchingStraight I’ve never used bamboo batting, only cotton or poly cotton, but I’ve never prewashed them. Given that it wasn’t woven like fabric I got the impression it would turn into a massive ball of fuzz in the washer!

FletchingStraight · 23/07/2023 17:51

@SBAM good to know I can just crack on. Thanks!

SBAM · 23/07/2023 18:08

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar yes, it’s a double gauze. Not one that seems to have crinkled up into squares like some do though. Perhaps it will once it’s been washed more?

NutellaEllaElla · 23/07/2023 18:24

I am knackered! I ignored all my responsibilities today and just worked on my holdall bag. I can't believe how slow I am but I added straps, shoulder strap anchors, interfaced everything and fitted a zip pocket. That's it! All day!!

I did unpick and redo many things including imperfect topstitching and what I thought was incorrect zip facing, turned out to have been correct the first time so I had to unpick that twice...

OP posts:
NutellaEllaElla · 23/07/2023 18:27

Actually, I did also fit the internal pocket as well.

OP posts:
NutellaEllaElla · 23/07/2023 18:50

And adjusted another pocket

Jins · 23/07/2023 19:22

Well I’ve cut out, notched and tailor tacked my dress and completed one sleeve. Haven’t managed to catch the gathering stitches in the seam but it’s not terribly obvious and unpicking it could end in disaster so it’s staying. I’ll be hand basting the next sleeve.

I’ve got 1.2m left which is a result. I think I’ve cut it all out 🤣

kittykarate · 23/07/2023 19:31

I've done 75% of 3 projects - sewed 2 tshirts, pressed and pinned hems and left it at that. I've turned the hem on a pair of combats I'm bodging out of the Made by Rae Luna pants but they need all their elastics doing.

Brefugee · 23/07/2023 19:41

I've sewn some gift bags, sewn a paintbrush holder (roll up thing) made a cushion cover from a t-shirt (it's more like a pillow cover, the picture on the shirt was right up to the neckline which means i also preserved the neckline by sewing a piece of sleeve behind it) and started making my daughters t-shirt dress by cutting off the bottom part of the t-shirt, sewn side-seams for the skirt fabric (including the requested side-seam pockets) and am pondering if it needs to be llined.

Sewingdufus · 23/07/2023 20:45

I had a long day driving yesterday and haven’t done much of anything today! I have traced most of HC’s Yanta overalls and am planning to make some in seagull heavy cotton. Must make meringues first!
