Welcome sewists new and old.
Before the break we were losing all self control. Fabric buying is a separate hobby. No judgement here. Pop in and share your wins and woes but most of all, please tell me what the heck to do with any current sewing project because I have no idea what i'm doing. Thankyouplease. Smile

I name change regularly. Can you guess my sewing style?!

FletchingStraight · 25/07/2023 08:52

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar I really hope we get some decent weather for you to wear your top, it's bright & fun. I could do with a bit of that in my life too!

@Jins looks great, so well constructed.

I hadn't known about the perils of viscose, feeling a bit under skilled for when I attempt my Sara Pascoe blouse dupe. Luckily the fabric was cheap.

My user name is archery related 😁 I have name changed a few times over the years as I'm easily bored & distracted

kittykarate · 25/07/2023 09:48

My name is a mashup of my old clubbing nickname (there are 4 people left in my life who still call me this) and my hobby at the time because I was well into martial arts 20+ years ago. I don't name change often.

kittykarate · 25/07/2023 09:51

Viscose is just so unpredictable - I made that TatB shirred blouse in viscose and it's holding together ok . If it's under any kind of stress or strain though it does just seem more likely to go 'fuck it'.

@FletchingStraight I've just taken up archery. I can just about hit the target!

FletchingStraight · 25/07/2023 11:22

@kittykarate glad yours is holding in there, let's see how I get on!

Well done in hitting the target at least. I only took it up last year & am really enjoying, & improving

I hate to frighten you all but in sewing terms (at my pace of sewing anyway) Christmas is just round the corner.

I have committed to sewing a few items to add to stock for DD's Christmas sale of works at her office (funds going to Women's Aid). I'm planning to make a few wine bottle gift bags and maybe a couple of Christmas aprons. If anyone has any suggestions they will be gratefully received.

Also planning to make a grown up sized apron for DM as part of her Christmas present. She is nearly impossible to buy for!

Small things I always think of for that kind of sale would be:

Flex frame pouches - you can get flex frames from Amazon and eBay.

Waxed sandwich wraps.

Mug cosies.

Lanyards.

The Skye wrap from Cool Crafting www.coolcrafting.co.uk/skye-wrap/#comments

Infinity scarf with pockets www.patternsforpirates.com/product/free-pocket-infinity-scarf/

Any good?

TragicMuse · 25/07/2023 19:42

I used to use a name that was one I used all over t'inter.

Then after The Great Dara Breach I realised my data was at risk with such a cavalier attitude so I started name changing and using different ones all over the place.

No special inspiration for my name here, I quite like the muses. And sometimes I'm a bit tragic!

GnomeDePlume · 25/07/2023 21:29

@TragicMuse thank you, some great ideas there. I will check with DD to see what she thinks will sell.

The infinity scarf may be a good one for another present for the day of which we must not speak!

Gah. Insomnia's a bitch

Thought I might as well ask some questions.

The instructions for the holdall bag are sparse. Do you know if I am supposed to finish seams? I normally overlock them. Am I supposed to press them as well? Instructions never mention either.

dubyalass · 26/07/2023 07:54

@FletchingStraight you could try starch spray to make the viscose more stable? Caveat: I haven't used it before but have some in my kit.

@GnomeDePlume sorry, please do talk about C*tms if you want to - I'm just trying not to think about it until I have to 😁

PickAChew · 23/07/2023 23:53

I'd tissue fit first @bookbook as closet core are drafted.for giants! Lovely high rise bottoms for me but the cleavage has too much plunge for me and cropped pants are full length!

Thanks for the tips! I must admit , being a tight yorkshire woman , when I print out patterns , I always print all the sizes , not just the one I need , then use baking parchment to trace out the size I want . I can then use that to alter and fit. Saves time and paper when you have a grandson that grows like a weed Grin

bookbook · 26/07/2023 09:12

Nutella - is the bag lined , so you dont see the seams ? I dont have an overlocker ,but if the material has any chance whatsoever of fraying , I strengthen mine . If its on show , I tend to bind . But I always , always press seams when I have finished them . On bags , you cant wait until the end , and it does make a difference to the finished look

NutellaEllaElla · 26/07/2023 10:25

It is lined yes but it also is fraying already.

Have you much of a seam allowance? If so , then overlock if possible . I suspect you have too many seams on a holdall , but Prym fray stop is excellent for stabilising fraying material ( but comes in tiny bottles ) . I suspect ( but haven't tried) that maybe PVA glue would do the same job if the seams are not on show - may be worth a try on a bit of waste material . It is so annoying when you have done the work for this to happen .

NutellaEllaElla · 26/07/2023 16:33

Yeah I don't see why I wouldn't have enough seam allowance. I'll do that.

Hi everyone. I’ve bought a pattern from a charity shop and plan to adapt it ( the sleeveless version) to make it flared rather than straight. Where would you advise putting in the flare? Each side of each panel, just each side of the side panels ? Hoping one of you experts can advise!

123ZYX · 26/07/2023 21:23

Do you want to keep it empire line? I'd drop the waist and add some flair on each seam around what's left of the skirt. That would make it more skater dress shape, through, which might not be what you're looking for

Storynanny1 · 26/07/2023 21:43

Not sure. I did think about joining the pattern pieces ie bodice to skirt to make it neither empire or have a waist seam as I’m very short waisted and dresses with a waist seam make my bust almost level with waist!!! If I dropped the seam would you add flare to every edge ?

123ZYX · 26/07/2023 21:46

I'd be tempted to add a small flair to each seam to keep it balanced - from about hip level.

Definitely would need some toiling if you were making that many changes

123ZYX · 26/07/2023 21:48

That might be because of my shape, though - I'm somewhere between pear and hourglass shaped so prefer to skim over hips to disguise them rather than highlight them

Storynanny1 · 26/07/2023 21:50

Yes going to make a rough version first

Storynanny1 · 26/07/2023 22:03

I’ll have go at changing pattern tomorrow and cut out a toile.
Just watched the sewing bee final! My prediction for the winner was correct!

depending on where you want the flare to start , could you add godets to the seams perhaps?

Storynanny1 · 26/07/2023 22:50

Godets might work yes. I think I’ll experiment with some of the ideas.
Just remembered I bought this book years ago and gave up after chapter! Had a look through and this page for adaptation suggests adding 3.5 flare to the hem of panel seams and 5cm to side seams - I guess that might work

Storynanny1 · 26/07/2023 22:51

Forgot add the photo!
