Hello, the old thread fizzled out after christmas, so here is a brand spanking new one.

You don't have to be at all particularly talented just enthusiastic

Do it Alice. I did take pics thinking of a future tute but they got lost in the back up purge of 2007
All you need is 5 slits for the straps, and then you can put some sort of edge if you want (bias or something) or just hem it over. Sheepskin doesn't fray easily either, kinda like fleece, so really easy to play with.

dizzyday07 · 20/04/2010 09:33

I make fleece buggy liners and they are easy to make.

Cut 2 rectangles of fleece to fit. Sew together (RS facing) but at the 2 top corners add a couple of cord ties.

Turn out and slipstitch gap closed.

I use a zig zag stitch on my machine to outline the slit holes before cutting through - but you could easily do it by hand by cutting and then blanket stitching/overstitching the edges together.

FlyMeToDunoon · 20/04/2010 10:29

Alice I got a cheap sheepskin from the internet, maybe ebay, and just cut slits. The skin was sold as a pet bed as it was not pure white and was slightly misshapen. Bargain. But I didn't edge the slits and the top ones have split. My eldest has it as a rug in her room now.

overmydeadbody · 20/04/2010 21:08

wow am impressed with all the oushchair liners.

When ds was a baby I was very very poor so made my own cozytoes for his maclaren.

It was fleece lined (black fleece) with lovely maroon cord for the outside, and lined with thick wadding. There was one big zip running from the bottm all the way up one side, and slits (done up with buttonhole stitching) for the straps of the maclaren to fit through. It is possibly the single thing I have ever made that I have been most proud of.

overmydeadbody · 20/04/2010 21:13

Tonight I have worked for bout an hour on sewing more triangles together, and have also quickly made a little lined sunglasses bag out of a bit of sleeve from one of the charity shop grandad shirts I used for the bunting, so it closes with a button using an existing button hole. Lazy crafting or what?!

helyg · 20/04/2010 21:23

Ooh, can I join in?

I love crafting, and am aiming this year to make most of my Christmas presents. So I have started early...

I have just finished a scarf for my mum knitted in this yarn (Garnet shade). I have now started knitting one for DD in the same yarn but in Carnival shade.

I have just ordered 3 pairs of different coloured stripy socks to have a go at making sock monkeys. DS1 fell in love with one last year at a craft fair, but it was £16 so I decided this year I'd make them one each.

I have also just ordered some fabrics to make a patchwork cushion for DD's bedroom (not a Christmas present). She also wants some bunting, I am hoping that the same fabric will stretch to make that too.

I also ordered a little cross stitch bookmark kit as I thought it was pretty.

Just nobody mention the latch hook rug that I started for DD's room when I was pregnant but have still not finished. She is now 4

snickersnack · 20/04/2010 23:24

£16 for a sock monkey?! Am clearly in the wrong job.

I knocked up a magic bag for dd's magic show when I got home from work. Three pieces of fabric stitched together on three sides so you have two pockets, plus some felt stars on the front. She's 5 so the standard of magic isn't high and any sense of smugness I may have had vanished when she made her brother's matchbox fire engine "disappear" and he screamed hysterically for 15 minutes. Beware of quick fix craft solutions...

Alicetheinvisible · 21/04/2010 11:17

Well, i have been looking at how to's and tutorials on Roman Blinds and think i can (just about) figure it out. Going to pop into a curtain place in the next village sometime this week and have a look at their stock. That fabric land site has roman blind tape very cheap and lining, so may phone them.

Today my crafting will consist mainly of sewing elastic into DD's ballet shoes

overmydeadbody If you're still around I tried to CAT you earlier but it says you don't accept them?

DingALongCow · 22/04/2010 00:00

Hello, another lurker finally joining in.

I have a huge list of stuff to do including:

2 sets of curtains-(really dont want to do these so am putting them off atm)

a queen/princess dress for DD who is almost 5. This is the first costume the school have asked for and there is a prize for the best, Iam just too competitive! Looking for inspiration but I only have until the 20th May.

I just made DD a dress from a Simplicity pattern and its sweet but not quite right so I'm goingto have another go. She has a size 3 chest, size 7 waist and size 6 length so I am going to jig it about a bit.

Knitted blanket for DD's birthday in June, 100 small squares and I have 31 left to knit.

Doll's house accessories for DD's birthday

Refashion some of my old skirts to be less frumpy looking

Mobile, dungarees and quilt for DS which is mostly guilt as I keep meaning to do stuff for him too.

My mother's partner's daughter is having a baby in November so I am going to make lots of baby bits, looking forward to all the sweet little patterns!

Now I just need double the amount of free time I currently have!

abdnhiker · 22/04/2010 07:44

Hi, I thought I'd join as I've got a bunch of things on the go. I've got three baby quilts for friends due in the next two months - the first is an adaption of a Densye Schmidt pattern from her book - if anyone else has this, there's a far simpler way to make everything than she descibes. I'm also handquilting a quilt for myself, it's in rather girly fabric to counter the boyness of my house (two DS and my DH - it's all about cycling in here) and I'm knitting a scarf out of some lovely wool I've had for years but never finished a project in. This is about the 6th time I've started something with the wool so I'm not too hopeful. My knitting skills aren't that great either - my mainstay is mittens for the boys (can never have too many as they seem to get theirs wet after about 10 minutes outside).

overmydeadbody · 22/04/2010 19:02

Hello everyone,

Just marking my place so I can lurk. I'm going to attempt to start knitting and crocheting again.

I'm going to try and make a baby blanket, I saw an pattern in one of the Debbie Bliss books and it looks around about my level (beginner) so hopefully I'll be able to manage it.

wastingaway · 24/04/2010 10:17

Hello everyone. Some lovely lists

Hermya, I had a book from the library when I started knitting that was baby knits, but structured so you developed skills as you went through, very good and motivating as you could produce an item of clothing with basic skills.

Ooh there's some yummy stuff on that site Alice. Hows the blind coming along?

I have started on the red hooded jumper for DS. It's in 4 ply, so on smaller needles which I enjoy.
I've also got some Eco Wool to make step-MIL some wrist-warmers, which I'll need to get started on soon.

Alicetheinvisible · 25/04/2010 07:36

Blind......ummmmmmmmm........

Today we are going swimming, shopping and roast dinnering, so no blind today. But my mission this week is to go to the curtain shop.

Have a good sunday all

JackBauer · 25/04/2010 08:39

I am still thinking about my blind.

I went out the other night and when I came back I had a crystal clear view of DH swigging from the OJ bottle in the fridge [boak]
I need to figure out how to fix it to the UPVC window frame though, am thinkging strong suckers and then lightweeight fabric and canes for the blind? It doesn't need to be heavy, just opaque!
I have a gorgeous purple bedsheet that is really worn and I have been saving to do something with, am tempted to chop that and use it as my kitchen is white doors and cream walls and no colour.... Hmmm...it's very thin fabric so will still let the light in in the morning as well

Have booked my table for the school summer fair too! DH is off to work later and the girls are not feeling too hot so am going to get the sewing machine out later and make some crayon/pad holders and a few mini dolls for the fair. And possibly a new wallet for me!

JackBauer · 25/04/2010 13:05

Oh wow! was mooching for roman blind ideas and got sidetracked.

Got an older DS who would like aproject?
try this

Alicetheinvisible · 26/04/2010 10:26

I have been watching tutorials on how to make baby bibs. I think it could be a really good thing to get me and the sewing machine going again. I am all excited no [sad fucker emoticon]

OP posts:
Alicetheinvisible · 26/04/2010 11:39

I have just made a bib! I used this tute as a basic.

So it has taken me an hour to dig out all the sewing kit, an old t-shirt, a bib for a template and make one (this includes trying to remember how to thread the machine ) It is also the first time i have ever used a fabric with any kind of stretch in it.

Luckily DD is shattered from the weekend so is curled up on the sofa watching telly

OP posts:
JackBauer · 26/04/2010 13:40

Did no sewing. PMT.
Bibs look good though.

DingALongCow · 26/04/2010 14:14

No actual crafting done here, although I bought some lovely fabric at the weekend which is all being washed now.
Pale blue linen for a skirt for me, bright poly cotton prints for DD and an emerald green for DS's dungarees.
I also found about 6 metres of purple fabric at the bottom of a bin bag that I have owned for at least 7 years and never used. I got a Burda pattern (2463) for DD's princess dress and itwill do for that with the trimmings she chose. The pattern calls for velvet but I hate the feel of it.
Also found a pattern to knit stars which I want to try out if i have the time.

Love the bib pattern, will add that to the list.

FlyMeToDunoon · 26/04/2010 18:15

Got some fleece I ordered off ebay for the pushchair liners and have realised that I won't be doing much sewing for a while as I have just started packing to move house. Doh!
Knitting may be good to take up again and finish to relieve some stress.
