Hello, the old thread fizzled out after christmas, so here is a brand spanking new one.

You don't have to be at all particularly talented just enthusiastic

Hello!

Does anyone know where I could get a pattern/tutorial for making toddler trousers?

I'm fed up of DS trousers not fitting over his big cloth nappy bum and fancy doing the trousers as my first sewing project.

I'm then going to learn to do embroidery and decorate the trousers with starfish etc.

snickersnack · 27/04/2010 23:09

I have a pattern you could have. Can you CAT me? I used it once but didn't cut it up. It's v simple and straightforward but I've found a plentiful supply of second hand clothes for him now so doubt I'll need to use it again. You'd be very welcome to it.

wastingaway · 27/04/2010 23:29

Snickersnack, that's very kind. I don't have cat, but I've a separate email account -

Hello - just found this topic. Just what I need.

Here's my to do list:

  1. Finish dress to wear to wedding - I'm making
this in silk with silk linking
  1. Make a feather headpiece a la Kenley Collins (Project Runway) to go with above dress. Never done this before but some great tutorials online and it doesn't looks too hard.
  1. Make 3 x little girls headbands for flower girls at above wedding
  1. Finish knitting baby jumper - started it for DD (now 2.5) before she was born but want to finish for friend due in May (I'm OK at very basic knitting only)
  1. I need some more summer clothes - have fabric at home for 2 more dresses. MUST USE THIS FABRIC BEFORE BUYING MORE

Loads more but actually that is enough for now!

It's difficult to find sewing time isn't it? And space - I have corner of small table imac & crap sits on to put sewing machine. Tiny ironing board that has to go on kitchen bench so that needs to be cleaned up first. Cut out on DD's platic IKEA table or floor -oh my knees!

DingALongCow · 28/04/2010 13:55

Thats a beautiful dress Downdog. I have some fabric to make myself clothes but always find myself drawn to the sweet children's patterns. So my children are beautifully turned out but I am wearing 5 year old Tesco jeans and an old stained top. Maybe once I have done a few more thingson my to-do list (laughs hollowly). DD has reached the age where everything for her in the shops is either beautiful but expensive or pink, frilly and overly girly, so am making most of her summer wardrobe myself.

I managed to get the material cut out for DD's princess dress and am now wrestling with ribbon and trim decisions. DH is much better at this than me so I'll let him make the final decisions.

I also have agreed to make a couple of cloaks for DD's friends who want to go as kings.

Know what you mean about space, I have to completely clear the dining table to sew/cut out patterns. I think if I had the machine out all the time I would egt so much more done.

JackBauer · 28/04/2010 14:06

wasting, try this if you have a a pair that fit him now, really supremely easy trousers.

downdog, I saw your dress on another tghread, looks fab. I have to use the dining table to sew on, my machine is kept next to it on a shelf and the fabric is on the other side of the room in a chest.

Am in the middle of sorting all the ebdrooms out and am very tempted to get a table and set the machin eup uostairs in my bedrom where it could stay out the whole time but I ewouldn't be able to watch telly whiel I sew....tricky.

Downdog · 28/04/2010 14:17

Jack - sewing room dream envy!

Wasting - have you seen this tutorial - it's for making toddler dress out of a mans shirt, but they also used shirt sleeves to make pants!!!

JackBauer · 28/04/2010 17:18

AH yes, you say that, but in reality it would be the dusty, dark, slightly damp corner of my bedroom, and mean moving stuff round so it was more cramped than it should be for a large double bedroom, but oh, it would be lovely! We have already moved a load of toys upstairs to make the spare room a 'play room' so there aren't hordes of toys down here....so the kids could be distracted...

That tute is awesome This is the last summer DD2 will be toddler size so I have to use it!

helyg · 28/04/2010 21:14

Rather excitingly we are starting a craft club at the DC's school next week. Theoretically we are going to teach a whole load of kids aged 4-11 how to knit, crochet, cross stitch etc and then make things which we can sell to raise money for the school. It is being run by a team of gullible volunteer parents.

So if anyone has any ideas to share or has done anything similar before I would be really grateful! We were thinking of starting with greetings cards with simple cross stitched or even knitted designs.

Dingle · 28/04/2010 21:28

Haven't ventured on MN for ages. completely lost touch and my crafty mojo with it.

Can any ol' crafters join in. I fancy dusting off my knitting needles and really want to be re-inspired with my card making.

List usually work quite well for me but I am such a ditherer, actually deciding what to do next takes up all my spare time!

My crafty list;

  1. find my mojo.
2 decide what to do.
  1. find my mojo
4 decide what to do 5 find my mojo 6 decide what to do....................
wastingaway · 29/04/2010 11:36

Nice tutorials. Those shirt-sleeve trousers are really cute!

Helyg, that's fantastic! Cross-stitched cards is a great idea.

Hey Dingle! Got any UFOs that might get you started?

Downdog · 29/04/2010 12:39

re upcycling men's shirts to toddler dresses, here is the link to the MUMMY tutorial of them all:

dress shirt tutorial

and I like this one too but haven't tried it yet

Dingle · 29/04/2010 17:09

"Hey Dingle! Got any UFOs that might get you started? "

Hmmmmm...one or two! A craft room full of cardmaking stuff, a loft full of wool, a few cross stitch projects stuffed in cupboards...you know what I mean?

I gave up knitting years and year ago when I had my youngest who has Down syndrome. Time was so precious and I moved onto papercrafting to get quicker results.

I am now on a few Design teams but I seem to make the cards, blog them and end up with boxes of cards with no real purpose. I feel I want to move back to a craft where I feel I have actually achieved something. Does that make ANY sense at all!

I am searching around the net ATM for a few knitting patterns that take my fancy. Any sites that you could recommend with decent P&P charges please?

wastingaway · 29/04/2010 17:27

Have you signed up to Ravelry.com? Lots of links to free patterns on there.

Dingle · 29/04/2010 19:13

LOL...yes I am a member thank you wastingaway. Only issue is I spend days over there just looking!

YoMoJo · 29/04/2010 19:39

Some good links, I only wish I had a girl to make them for!

I finally got some brown Guttermans thread for my machine so I can finally finish my bag, but have been really busy sorting out baby stuff for a nearly new sale so havent had the time.

at those dresses, i would be worried anything I made at that scale would unravel whilst I was wearing it lol!

wastingaway · 30/04/2010 07:43

Oh Dingle, I know that feeling!

Right, I need to get galvanised, I've hardly done any craft this week.

Wristwarmers need to be ready by May 11th at the latest, so I'll cast on for those tonight.

Alicetheinvisible · 30/04/2010 08:20

I love those dresses made from shirts. I have about a dozen of DH's old shirts that i have kept to make stuff out of (was thinking just pyjamas for DD) but now thinking "Hmmmmmmm"

OP posts:
Downdog · 30/04/2010 09:32

One of the plus sides of rainy bank holiday weekend (as the one approaching) is I won't feel bad about stopping indoors & getting some sewing done. Once DD is suitably exercised (big into scooting & swimming pool at the moment)& fed she will have a long nap & I will aim to do the following:

Finish silk dress for wedding.
Sew blue batik skirt that has been cut up for ages.
Convert ones men's shirt into dress for DD (I want to try the style with elastic around waist)

snickersnack · 30/04/2010 10:00

I am feeling quite smug after whipping up a quilt top yesterday for my mother's god-daughter's new son. Just need to quilt it, which won't take long as it's not particularly big.

I do love the shirt dresses - do you think a large man's shirt could be turned into a dress for a very average sized 5 year old?

Wastingmyeducation - I got the pattern out last night to post, and cannot find it anywhere. Am sure dh must have tidied it away - will ask him tonight, but if it doesn't turn up today, will probably have to post it on Monday, sorry.

wastingaway · 30/04/2010 10:10

That's ok Snickersnack.

Alicetheinvisible · 30/04/2010 10:22

Ooh, i like this too

OP posts:
Downdog · 30/04/2010 10:33

Snickersnack - I'm not sure the shirts will be long enough for a 5 year old - you might need to do a hybrid of 2 perhaps? Google around as there are loks of shirt upcycling ideas out there

snickersnack · 30/04/2010 11:04

Found it, and posted it! On it's way as I speak

Dingle · 30/04/2010 12:06

I knew I shouldn't have clicked on those links.....I need more time! LOL

I have ignored the huge stash of wool sitting in my loft and had a walk around to my little local wool shop. Didn't have what I wanted so I came back with some lovely deep red, merino wool mix, chunky and have just finsihed the back rib of a cardigan for ME!!!
Must stop and do a bit of housework now.

My simple little crafty to do list for now;
*Design Team card for Sunday.
*Design team card for Wednesday.
*Knit 'til my little hearts content.
