Hello, the old thread fizzled out after christmas, so here is a brand spanking new one.

You don't have to be at all particularly talented just enthusiastic

right - snickersnack i said i would be back with that link - here it is...

snickersnack · 12/05/2010 23:35

Fantastic! Thank you - that's perfect...those colours are lovely and I haven't seen that shop before. Time to get started, I reckon. But I want to learn to crochet as well - hard to know where to find the time to do everything with children to look after and money to earn.

So, seriously, crochet people - how hard is it to learn? I can't knit. Is that a problem?

Dingle · 13/05/2010 08:06

oh wow, love that link! Thank you!!

whispywhisp · 13/05/2010 10:33

When I was a child I could crochet and found it soooo easy. Now I haven't a clue! Weird how I can do something so easily when I was younger and now I don't.....

I did some knitting the other day....cast on - fine...casting off....couldn't remember so had to get DD1 to do it!!

I did a lot of patchwork when I was younger too....that link on here for the material bundles is sooo tempting!

wastingaway · 13/05/2010 10:55

i finished the wrist-warmers on Monday, and she loved them!

Think I'll work on the 4 ply jumper for DS tonight, I'm working on the back, so it's rows and rows of stocking stitch atm, nice and meditative.

I've been looking at embroidery too, like I need another thing to start.
But I'm planning on embroidering on the trousers for DS when I've made them. V. exciting.

whispywhisp · 13/05/2010 11:48

wastingaway...

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 13/05/2010 18:40

I can't knit.
I can crochet. taught myself last Jan and have made loads, all my chirstmas presents (hats and wrist warmers).
Get stitch and bitch - the happy hooker. tis great.

Sorry rushed post, dd's going mad.

wastingaway · 13/05/2010 20:27

I've got that book Jack, I've been flicking through it occasionally for a few weeks, building up the nerve to step over to the other side.

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 13/05/2010 21:05

I haven't made much from the book tbh, I go on ravelry or Crochet Pattern Central has loads of links for cool small projects.

wastingaway · 13/05/2010 21:14

I found the knitting Stitch n Bitch so helpful at getting techniques right, I figured I'd trust her to teach me to crochet.

VoulezVouzCrochezAvecJACK · 13/05/2010 21:16

Oh yeh, I posted too soon then! I don't make the patterns so much as use it like an encyclopedia/reference book. I regularly make random squares using methods from the book.

pookamoo · 19/05/2010 13:35

Here's a question for you ladies...
I found this peg bag which I would love to make (or something similar) but the blog owner hasn't put up the pattern.

I'm sure it's obvious but I have never managed to work it out for myself... how do you line the circular opening?
If you sew two pieces together right sides facing in a circle, you can't turn it out.

Anybody care to help me out here??

Oh and I went along to the "craft fair" which charges £7.50 for a table, and sadly it was seriously underwhelming. There were 3 stalls. So I will have to think of something else.

snickersnack · 19/05/2010 18:05

She does say she'll post a pattern if enough people ask. I don't know the answer but I see the problem. Could you leave the edges raw, sew it wrong sides together, tack together and put bias binding round it? Fairly sure she hasn't done it that way but might look quite pretty.

DingALongCow · 19/05/2010 20:51

Finally finished DD's dress, just in time as she needs it for tomorrow. I was thrown by a last minute request for something to hold her sword so improvised with a ribbon and some velcro.Picture of grumpy DD in unironed dress and with sword attached here hopefully.

Back to the curtains now.

dizzyday07 · 19/05/2010 23:40

Pookamoo - at a guess I'd say that the front piece was open at the top (so looked like a babies bib) when it was stitched to the lining. Then she could sew the top edges together before attaching the backing. Any seam at the top is being covered by the eyelet hole. Hope that helps

pookamoo · 20/05/2010 09:30

dizzy after thinking about it in my sleep last night (as you do) I had come to more or less the same conclusion.
The only other way I can think of is if it was just topstitched. Thanks.

Redtedart · 20/05/2010 20:38

pookamoo · 21/05/2010 09:13

My Dsis just sent me a link to {{http://www.wesellfabricscraps.co.uk/buy-fabric-scraps/ this]] site. It has fabric scraps by the kilo!

pookamoo · 21/05/2010 09:13

Oops! try this!

snickersnack · 21/05/2010 11:43

I saw that recently - has your dsis bought anything from them? I love the idea (am making a string quilt - need lots and lots of scraps of all sizes) but it all needs to be cotton. Not much point getting a load of polycotton and other stuff...

Some of the US fabric websites sell scraps but for some reason won't ship to the UK.

wastingaway · 22/05/2010 21:23

Hello!

I've finally started on the toddler trousers. I think I'm going to handstitch them. I'm probably going to have to redraw the pattern a few times til it fits the large nappy/short legs of my little darling.

I've got a stack of old pillowcases for turning into shopping bags and figure that will make a good project for learning the sewing machine on. Whenever I get round to that.

pookamoo · 24/05/2010 12:29

Snickers I wondered that. Dsis has asked for one for her birthday next week, so I will find out.

Wasting, have you heard of morsbags?

wastingaway · 24/05/2010 20:10

Yeah, it's fab, I've been meaning to look into that more.

overmydeadbody · 24/05/2010 20:23

I finally ifnished the bunting!!! yay

Just as well as wedding is on saturday.

50 metres of the stuff, consisting of 220 triangles

will upload pics to profile

snickersnack · 27/05/2010 10:42

OK. I have learned (sort of) to crochet. Got the Happy Hooker out of the library and have been practising practising practising. Had an unfortunate incident with a skein of wool - I didn't realise you were meant to wind it into a ball, and I spent about 6 hours untangling it. Grrr.

Anyway. I have a pattern for a square that I definitely think I could IF I can get my head round this. It says to make a foundation chain of 33 loops. Then make a treble into the fourth loop from the chain. I get that - I've effectively got two trebles, because the first three loops I skipped become my first stitch. So then I have 2 stitches, and 28 (being 33 minus 4) loops to put stitches in to. That makes 30 stitches for my foundation row. But the pattern insists I should have 31. What's going on? I could fudge it by making another stitch somewhere (or by just putting another loop into my first chain) but I can't get my head round where I'm going wrong...
