I normally make amigurumi.

Nearly finished this cardigan for my daughter for Christmas. I've used a taupe colour rather than the cream in pattern photo. I highly recommend Hanjan crochet for patterns as she makes videos to go with them.

This is stunning!

Just commenting as I want to learn to crochet. Saw a woman on a train doing it a few years ago and it looked amazing.

What are you thinking of crocheting in particular? There are soo many YouTube tutorials, i have literally just watched one myself to refresh how to do the loop stitch.
You just have to push past the fiddly awkward stage of how you hold your hook/yarn and it becomes muscle memory then.
Lots of brilliant crocheters on here with tips and tricks too.

The cute toys would be good but I’ve no idea what is a good starter project. I’ve seen nice scarves, cushion covers and so on.

@Avie29 excellent cow improv. Particularly impressed by the udders. 😁. Armageddon (see what I did there) continues here. Kaspar the King finished apart from sewing bits on. Back to another head for Melchior.😬
@Caaarrrl that is just amazing. I just never have the patience for big stuff. Confused
@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain I remember just doing endless ‘chains’. I learnt because I wanted to make some poppies for Rememberance. I recommend trying the easiest granny square from Bella Coco. Like @Avie29 says, once you get used to holding the hook and yarn it gets easier. Also watching tutorials. It took me a while to get used to pattern terminology, I used to write it all out and I still note what round I am on so I don’t lose track. Also use a stitch marker👍.

Auction would be a good idea but im not sure where/how to auction them.
I didn’t think of that, all it says in the book is that the pictures and text is not allowed to be copied and resold 🤔.

Another possibility - I've found I make more money for charity by raffling things off than by auctioning them. I sold 110 £1 tickets for a large decorated Christmas cake I was raffling for th local hospice, and I wouldn't have got a bid for that much, I don't think.

InfoSecInTheCity · 11/10/2026 17:59

Latest make finished just before I head off for a week long work trip tonight. DD has decided she does not want it to have a face (I don’t know why but it’s one less thing to do, so ok)

If you want to make bigger projects (blankets, wearables)- Some granny squares, just to get a feel for the hook, or if you want to go down the toy route a basic teddy body shape, i tend to do most of my teddies/dolls the same shape and then add the different features, for example a doll i made for DD (rapunzel) i used the same base doll to make her snow white, Cinderella etc just different hair and different colour dresses/details, its very simple once you get the hang of it.

@Plumcorkyduff i am so glad you like the udders that was my fourth attempt at making them 😂 the other attempts just didn’t look right, i see what you did there 😉 😂, i am on to the donkey, ive not done jesus yet, i am not sure what to do about the eyes, i don’t think the 6mm are going to fit 🤔 he may have to have embroidered but that might look odd, i was thinking about doing the loop stich for the hay and snipping the loops so it looks shaggy- i only realised earlier that the yellow bit in his crib was hay i thought it was a little blanket lol.

I did think about a raffle too- although i am over my target now so i may gift the set to my mum for Christmas- she is the reason i am doing the fundraising anyway.

Welcome.

If you'd like to learn, there are lots of youtube videos or there is likely a local knit and natter type group in your area. I consider myself a beginner in that I can't read patterns and have made the exact same granny squares for years. I was originally shown by my mum, but have recently started using youtube to make other things. I've actually now learnt the name of a few stitches I've been using for years but had no idea of the name.

Once you work out how you'd like to hold the hook, a scarf that uses the same pattern over and over is an easier project IMO than say the lovely little animals o this thread.

Love seeing your projects.
I'm making a blanket for my DS' 30th birthday. I'll post a photo when it's finished. Can anyone recommend something to personalise it? I'd like it to say something like Made with love by Mum. I'm thinking a big button I could sew onto a corner or something like that. I'd really appreciate your help .

I used resin and made a button for my DD hat with little confetti-like bits in it from her old baby grows, turned out lovely and added a nice personal touch to her hat.
PS-would love to see the finished blanket 😊

Thank you @Avie29but that is far too ambitious for me. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of maybe an Etsy seller who is good at that kind of thing.
Btw for those asking about crochet magazines you can usually borrow an electronic version on Borrowbox

@MakingTheEndsMeet i love the mug! Where did you get the pattern?

Thanks, I freestyled it. I can’t follow written patterns, so I’ve kinda learned by watching video tutorials and then figuring it out. The cup started with a circle for the base, then made the sides by increasing every few rows until it was ‘big enough’ then added legs, a lid and a ‘cup cosy’.

MakingTheEndsMeet · 12/10/2026 19:50

Finished the chicken, a mascot for a cosplay group this weekend! It’s another ‘figured it out as I went’ make, I couldn’t find a pattern I liked so just bodged it!

@Plumcorkyduff I found this on YouTube, it’s pretty similar but a bit smaller.

Loving the makes on here. The chicken is lovely!

I’ll post a pic of mine tomorrow (I’m too lazy to dig it out now). I think I posted about it on here a week or so ago - it’s a Christmas cushion cover.
I’ve done thick snow on the floor, a navy sky, a sparkly red cabin/house and a Christmas tree. Spent an hour this morning deciding on whether to add beads/ribbon to the tree and how best to do it.
Need to make a sparkly moon and maybe stitch on some stars then decide what the back of the cushion will be - crochet? Sew on some Christmas material? I’m undecided.

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain I started with some granny squares then made a simple children’s scarf (no way I’d have the will power to make and sew together enough squares to make a blanket).
Good luck!

The fiddley stitched bits that we always put off…. Looking really good though!
