Not much sewing here. Trying to adjust a pattern to make it into a tapered rather than wide leg but also managed to make the thighs too narrow. Trying again with an extra few centimetres on each side. I may just admit defeat and buy a pattern but I haven’t found exactly what I’m after, hence trying a hack.

Went back to my Anna Allen Philippa trousers, this time with a zip fly. Fit seems good already but will need a few tweaks around the waistband. I’ve made them before and ended up taking them in quite a bit (too much in fact) so need to find a middle road, as it were. I think this fabric (corduroy) is more stable than the cheap denim I used before.

Good morning, I'm pleased to have found this thread. I'm getting back to sewing after a bit of time away.

I made this top a couple of weeks ago, and altered the back neck fastening as the method suggested by the pattern was awful. (The mustard one is theirs.) The pattern was full of errors, but it was a real boost to my confidence that I was able to spot the errors and correct them.

Today I'm going to make a t-shirt for DS.

Yours is much nicer @Castlerigg !

My cutting arm is slowly improving after my mishap a couple of weeks ago and I've cut out what seems like a million squares, this week (actually more like 100). Hopefully I can start sewing it all back together with the ones I cut out before wrenching my shoulder, now. I'm still missing a blue but hope to pick it up at a quilting show, next week.

Welcome to the thread @Castleriggand that’s a lovely top! Out of interest, what’s the pattern? Looks like the kind of company I’d like to avoid. The original is shocking!!!

I’ve made a fair bit of progress on my Archer shirt this week. Just the cuffs and the buttons left to do. It came together a lot easier than I thought I would, but the fit around the shoulder is odd. Lots of excess fabric around the armhole at the back. I can’t really work out what’s causing it, but it passes my Teams-test (i.e. it looks fine on a Teams call) so I’m sure I’ll get lots of wear out of it.

twobluechickens · 05/10/2024 07:48

Beautiful fabric @Castlerigg and welcome!

I am hoping to take advantage of the miserable forecast this weekend to finish my trousers. Still deciding which shirt pattern I want. Found a cape pattern from I Am Patterns which I think will be really useful for the cold weather, something I can just throw on to take the dog out.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/10/2024 07:53

Lovely colours @PickAChew Coincidentally, I’ve wrenched my shoulder too, falling downstairs. I’m hoping to get some sewing done today and have got a massage booked for tomorrow. It’s surprised me both how painful it’s been and also how long the pain is lasting.

I’m going to try self drafting a dress with some silly zodiac print fabric that I found in one of the buckets at Abakhan.

PickAChew · 05/10/2024 08:24

@twobluechickens you know you have to make a matching one for the dog, right? 🐶😂

I hope yours gets better soon, @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie - apparently a rotator cuff tear can take 6 weeks to calm down but never fully heals. I'm feeling it in stereo, today, after having my flu jab in the other arm on Thursday!

Jins · 05/10/2024 08:54

Much sympathy to the shoulder sufferers. I had two complicated frozen shoulders (not at the same time) a few years ago. One needed surgery. Shoulder pain is awful - you just can’t get any rest from it. Hope recovery is swift.

No sewing since I returned from holiday. DH keeps suggesting curtains for the bedroom. I have tried to explain that curtains feel more like a chore than an enjoyable hobby but he doesn’t get it 🤣. We decorated the room six months ago and put the old curtains back temporarily and I’ve not felt inspired to even measure up since then.

I’ve dug a random low stretch fabric out of the stash, possibly ponte but not great if it is. It’s destined to be trousers for gardening/housework. I can’t begin to tell you how uninspired I am but I need them so I’ll have to push on. Then it’s a couple of T shirts and some nightwear. I much prefer holiday sewing

twobluechickens · 05/10/2024 09:57

@PickAChew ha that’s a great idea 😂 She’s not mine (I’m a volunteer dog walker) but I think her owner would love it.

MarmiteWine · 05/10/2024 14:04

Thanks again to @Yalz for the M&S linen sheets tip. I've collected my order today. Really happy with them, especially the Indigo colour. I also got the Rich Amber, which isn't quite the shade I was hoping for, but perfectly wearable. I'm planning to make a Sewing Therapy Tie Dress.

Yalz · 05/10/2024 16:32

That’s a great pattern, @MarmiteWine , and I think it will work well in that linen.

Castlerigg · 05/10/2024 17:49

Thanks everyone for the welcome.

@CrimsonAlligator The pattern was by The Sewing Sanctuary, I picked it up at last year's Knitting & Stitching Show, and the fabric was from the same stall. I'm not usually into florals but I liked that one.

I did not make DS a T-shirt as I'd planned, but I've printed out the pattern and taped it together today, so hopefully I'll be able to make it tomorrow.

Sorry people are having shoulder issues, you just can't get comfortable with shoulder pain, it's exhausting.

Hey all, if you were going to Vietnam, the low cost tailoring capital of the world, what would you get made for you?

twobluechickens · 05/10/2024 21:56

Ooh, good question. I think I’d want a pair of trousers. Maybe a couple of oversized shirts.

twobluechickens · 05/10/2024 22:02

Did a bit more on my trousers this evening. Zip fly now complete and looking good. Just sent a few patterns off for printing, including the Phen shirt from Pattern Fantastique which looks right up my alley.

That one reminds me of a couple of shirts from C&A that I wore to death in the 80s!

This review, if you haven't read it already, has some useful pointers about the destructions www.isewthereforeiam.com/phen-shirt-by-pattern-fantastique/

twobluechickens · 05/10/2024 23:06

Ohhh thank you @PickAChew ! That is really helpful, it sounds like I might have been scratching my head otherwise. Maybe I’ll toile it first to get my head around the construction.

Ooh. I think I’d get some copies of the Vivienne Westwood Saturday dress - a black cotton one, a bright cotton one and two silk ones (a black one and a burgundy one).

Frumpyunicorn · 06/10/2024 10:48

I am making a wearable toile of the belle dress by stylearc, I have sized down as the first toile came out far too big but I might have to put some bust darts in too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/10/2024 13:58

I was supposed to be going for a massage for my shoulder, but she cancelled - so I've made a rather wobbly bias cut midi skirt instead. I haven't tried it on yet, but I think it's longer on one side than the other!

You could always re-hem it after hanging it for a while so it drops.

CrimsonAlligator · 06/10/2024 18:37

@MarmiteWine I’m planning to dye one half of my sheet. That may be an option if the amber colour is not quite what you had in mind?

Funnily enough, it's definitely wonky on the hanger but when I tried it on, it doesn't look wonky at all. Maybe I'm wonky too?

sewsewsewyourboat · 07/10/2024 10:25

Oh I am adding dog coats to the things I want to make, 3 don't need one but 1 of them is always cold despite the fact we live pretty much on the equator. I am finishing off a baby quilt for a gift this week. I have also been mastering the quilted tote and very happy with the results so far.
