I made an eye mask from some Liberty tana lawn I had with a free online pattern. I am pleased with how it has turned out. Now is it dark enough for sleeping whilst flying …

Well Bob (Pants) needs to change his name to Clown!!

What a disaster . . . they’re **ing massive, ridiculously huge. I had a suspicion they might be but they’re even bigger than anticipated. What a waste of time. Hrumph.

Hello, just lurking and wanted to say, I have had that bob pants problem and I really recommend cutting the pattern a size or two (or three!) smaller and unpicking and recutting the fabric.

Because it's quite a simple pattern, it's not too much of a nightmare - just 4 trousers pieces, pockets and waistband. It was totally worth it for me and meant I hadn't totally wasted the fabric or the time

Daffyyellow · 12/05/2025 10:04

Thanks @Shirtyllama -that’s my intention. I’ve had the pattern printed in A0, so now to trace, recut etc!

I am getting myself sorted for a garment sewing Bank Holiday weekend and going to challenge myself to make a jacket, which I can hopefully wear for Christmas/New Year's.
I have decided to go with the Auburn Blazer (Cashmerette) using some deadstock brocade fabric. I haven't received the pattern yet but I am hoping that I can make it without the collar as I have always fancied a collarless jacket.

twobluechickens · 14/05/2025 22:42

Two pairs of jeans cut out and I’m sewing both at the same time so that I don’t have to swap between standard and topstitching thread constantly. More of a production line. I do love making jeans.

Here to pick your brains, as i so often do. I am shortening a dress for my DD. It is one of those gauzy stretchy net things with an underdress.

The lining part is fine, either twin needle or overlock & stitch. But the overdress has a lettuce hem. Is it better to do that on my regular machine (small width, very small stitch-length zig-zag) or to use the rolled-hem (or other) function the overlocker has?

PickAChew · 15/05/2025 15:44

Doesn't the lettuce he rely on the stitching stretching the fabric a little? If so, the overlocker would probably do that more reliably.

ShoAndSew · 15/05/2025 18:43

i haven't the first clue! maybe i'll cut it and try both ways on the cut off piece to test it

InMySpareTime · 15/05/2025 18:54

Would it be easier to flip the dress inside out and take the length off the waist end of the skirt?

ShoAndSew · 15/05/2025 20:51

unfortunately there is no waist, that was my first thought when she asked. It is a bit stretchy so also shaped at the sides, i think cutting the bottom is the only way

I’m making Luna Lapins, I have made two so far and outfits (first time dressmaking). I was looking to making Luna’s mouse friend but my aunt wants me to make three more bunnies with outfits made from my late nanny’s dressing gown and pillow case.

PickAChew · 15/05/2025 22:06

I knew. I had seen a blog about doing this with an overlocker. This is machine specific but includes a link to using a sewing machine instead. There's a few YouTube videos out there, too.

https://oliverands.com/community/blog/2015/02/lettuce-hem-using-a-serger.html

I'm assuming you will have some offcuts. Definitely worth experimenting.

Luna Lapin is so sweet. My mum has made a few. The details are lovely.

Jins · 15/05/2025 22:09

Lettuce hems are quite straightforward with an overlocker. Sometimes I even manage them without trying. 🤦‍♀️

My machine recommends the rolled hem foot but the ordinary foot works just fine

ShoAndSew · 16/05/2025 10:30

Thanks. Will look at tutorials and report back 😁

Daffyyellow · 16/05/2025 15:24

Finally, I solved the printing problem. (HP printer and an iPad, couldn’t get it to print to scale).

Gave up and bought a new printer- a Canon. Printing off scale persisted. I used the Canon app to print and couldn’t ‘tick’ both print at 100% (not an option from printing from files) and A4. Turns out the Canon wants to print on Legal size to be at 100%. So I have now printed my newest pattern, W&W Banksia! That’s my win for today!!

(This problem had persisted across pattern companies.)

Basted the outer leg of my Heidi jeans this afternoon and the fit is almost perfect; I might even go in a further 5mm because they will stretch with wear. They have a slight gap at the back so I might grade them in slightly at the back sides to try to counter that. Really pleased though; I was worried that they might be too small.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before. I just watched this on Netflix
Check out “The Quilters” on Netflix

only half an hour but worth a watch.

It was an interesting watch. They make some fab quilts.

Haven't posted for ages! As always I remain so impressed with the makes on here... but my sewing machine hasn't been entirely idle. I made another Ogden cami which was a bit of a 'mare because I didn't realise when I ordered the linen- voile fabric I wanted, that the white dots were large and raised in a cotton wool-like material! Very hard and lumpy to sew over... Then, a couple of eveningy dresses for a cruise I went on in April...one was a Criswoodsews pattern...very clever way of doing it although I am sure I got the maths wrong because I had to replace the fabric that you cut out of the skirt section as it was suddenly tiny! Definitely a maths malfunction! I also made a lengthened version of TATB Stevie with some sparkly trim in a gunmetal fabric with a bit of a sheen. Loved the trim addition but the fit wasn't great. And finally the wonderful Paper Theory Miller trousers which I tried in a lighter weight fabric for the summer.

Rosenspants · 26/05/2025 09:55

tried to find photos...

Heidi jeans are finished and I’ve almost finished the Ash jeans, just the hems to go, plus adding a button. The bar tacks for the belt loops were particularly frustrating this time, my machine really struggled with them whereas normally I manage to get something vaguely acceptable. Had to redo several. Suspect it might be me rushing because it was getting late. Also I used a thicker interfacing than I normally do which was daft now I look back. My poor machine!

Next up are a few t-shirts for summer. I made the Deer & Doe Plantain (a freebie) which came out quite nicely but needs a couple of adjustments.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 27/05/2025 13:38

I've just got a sewing projector set up but haven't had a chance to do anything other than a couple of squares for my scrap "fuck neat corners" quilt cos we've been moving bedrooms around and redecorating.

Could really use ceiling mounting the projector for a bigger display area but it's about functional with a long pole clamp mount.

I’ve had a hankering to make a hat lately, something like a baker boy style, but I didn’t have suitable fabric. I wanted something tweedy, and a friend had the genius idea of checking the charity shops to look for a man’s jacket or similar. I did, and I found one and brought it home. But, on closer inspection, I can’t find any evidence of a label, nor where one has been cut out. I suspect it is handmade, and it feels new and unworn. So now I feel guilty about possibly pulling it apart to make a hat.

Logically, I know that the donor will never know, probably wouldn’t care, the charity have received funds, the intended wearer is absolved of their duties, and I’ve got fabric I wanted at a price that suits me. But I still feel bad about it.

The jacket belonged to Gaz who is very much a leathers and t-shirt sort of guy. His dear auntie Doris though he needed to cut his hair and smarten up a bit so made him a nice tweed jacket. Said jacket sat in the back of Gaz's wardrobe for several years until he had a clear out and sent it to the charity along with several of those sets of shirts and ties that you used to be able to buy.
