Your dress sounds gorgeous @YellowAsteroid

Here’s a picture of the Remy Raglan

kittykarate · 29/09/2024 20:15

I'm a lazy mare with my Remys and just go, fuckit, overlock it. Looks beautiful with the proper French seams @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2024 21:03

Thank you. Hopefully my next one will be much neater - these are rather thick and clunky!

twobluechickens · 29/09/2024 21:14

Not much sewing here. Trying to adjust a pattern to make it into a tapered rather than wide leg but also managed to make the thighs too narrow. Trying again with an extra few centimetres on each side. I may just admit defeat and buy a pattern but I haven’t found exactly what I’m after, hence trying a hack.

Yalz · 29/09/2024 22:26

Those dungarees look great, @bookbook . I imagine they were/are worn a lot.

Jins · 30/09/2024 09:31

Fab work @bookbook and @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

I need a bit of a hive mind approach to a repair. My black viscose etty camisole was a holiday superstar but I’ve just taken it out of the washing machine to find some damage/fraying. On the front of course.

I definitely didn’t trim the seams too closely but can’t check as I confidently topstitched. I also can’t turn it inside out because of said topstitching. My hand sewing probably isn’t up to an invisible repair.

Ideas? Or should I put it in the mending pile, never to be seen again?

bookbook · 30/09/2024 09:37

Thanks for the comments on the dungerees - she loved them

@Jins if you have a bit of room inside the seam , could you use a tiny bit of wonderweb tucked inside ? fiddly though , and maybe some fray stop too

Jins · 30/09/2024 09:42

I can’t get to the seam without unpicking the topstitching @bookbook and that’s dangerous with self destructive challis 😥. I don’t have fray stop so I’ll research that.

bookbook · 30/09/2024 09:44

I was thinking that you could tucki the wonderweb inside the seam as is where it has frayed , but maybe not enough wiggle room ?

Jins · 30/09/2024 09:55

The topstitching is at 2.5mm so risky for wiggling. I’m going through my machine’s embroidery stitches in the hope of finding something that would work - otherwise it’s some sort of trim I guess

CrimsonAlligator · 30/09/2024 10:56

Eek, when viscose challis wants to fray, it really frays doesn’t it?! This is exactly how I lost two Ogden camis after just one wash. So frustrating!

There’s not been much sewing going on here these past few days, but I did manage to buy some more fabric…Think it’s time for a self imposed fabric buying ban here too.

Your top looks great @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie. French seams always look so lovely. Nice work on those dungarees too @bookbook

twobluechickens · 30/09/2024 11:04

@Jins could you use a plain or decorative binding over the top? Would contain the fraying and accentuate the scalloped edge?

kittykarate · 30/09/2024 12:15

I can't think of a way of fixing that up apart from putting another layer of decorative binding over it or by trimming back the fibres and darning it.

Jins · 30/09/2024 12:30

I think it’s going to the mending pile for a dose of thinking about for now. I’ll practice darning in the meantime.

So annoying

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/09/2024 17:55

Such a shame about the camisole. A plain black camisole top is such a great basic. Trimming sounds like the best option.

Thanks for the comments on the top. Any ideas for a nice plain black fabric to make another one in? I'm not a fan of linen tops, unless a shirt that I can wear open, so maybe a good black viscose?

How's your satin stitch (hand-sewn)? You could stitch just an inch or so at the points where it's fraying, and perhaps a couple of other places, to look like a deliberate embellishment.

Jins · 30/09/2024 19:08

Satin stitch isn’t too bad. I’ll see if I still have some suitable embroidery thread

Jins · 01/10/2024 11:33

I’ve done a bit of a bodge - just need to tidy it up a bit. Black interfacing on the back and a simple line of some machine embroidery between the topstitching and the edge. Not immaculate but it makes it wearable.

Next Etty will be in more robust fabric and the next black cami will be an Ogden 🤣

Just received the M&S linen sheet some of us ordered. It is indeed relatively thin for a sheet, but perfect for what I have in mind (long sleeve shirt). There’s so much fabric, I reckon I can probably get two shirts out of it. Not bad for £12!

Glad you managed to fix that @jins. Looks good.

MarmiteWine · 01/10/2024 17:37

That's good to know @CrimsonAlligator. I ordered 2 different colours and I'm hoping to collect them tomorrow.

Jins · 02/10/2024 09:24

You’ve all got me tempted by those sheets 🤣

In other news I’ve had an email from Love Notions to say that the Laundry Day Tee is being retired as their free pattern and will be replaced with something new next week. It’s quite a good basic swingy style although I’ve only made the dress from the pattern. It’s free with a code that you get from the FB group or by subscribing to the newsletter.

Before I went on holiday I made a pile of fabrics and patterns to stash bust when I returned but the weather has been so awful that I’ve scrapped those plans and dug out some heavier weight fabrics for autumn/winter wear. What a year of awful weather we’ve had

Yalz · 02/10/2024 14:00

@Jins , there are some sale linen flat sheets left in M&S, but only Clay and Dark Amber at the lowest price. Grey and Bright Sage are reduced,, but not by as much.

Jins · 02/10/2024 16:36

Thanks @Yalz. Luckily I’m not so keen on those colours so my stash will not increase in size.

I’ve decided to make some proper covers for the overlocker and coverstitch. I’ve got loads of suitable fabric but need some suitable interfacing. I’ve seen fusible fleece mentioned - has anyone used it?

CrimsonAlligator · 02/10/2024 18:40

I’ve used fusible fleece before @Jins (Vilene 640). It was surprisingly easy to use - this was when I was just getting started and had an entry level machine, so it probably wasn’t my skills or equipment that made it easy!

ShoAndSew · 02/10/2024 21:21

i use fusible fleece all the time to give substance to zippered box pouches, fabric baskets and on the front of cushion covers. I find the best way to fuse it is with a hot iron, no steam but with a pressing cloth between the fabric and the iron - and rest the iron very very gently on the cloth enough to melt the glue, but not burn the fabric.
last lot i bought was H630
