I love that jumper @bruffin . Lovely neutrals - right up my street!

@tizwozliz He has such expressive eyes!
@CrochetBug very pretty waves , looks really good under the lighthouse

@SparkleHard My ds would love those socks!

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 12/11/2023 11:33

Beautiful blanket @CrochetBug!

Your jumper looks great, and it’s perfect for this weather @bruffin, so warm and cosy!

Thats really lovely @SparkleHard I love the texture effect.

He’s brilliant @tizwozliz Grin

How are you doing @WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally?

I haven’t had much chance to do much knitting wise but I’ve been weaving away when I get a chance and the end is in sight. It’s taking a fair bit of willpower to keep on weaving what is quite a boring pattern for a whole scarf - I can’t do it while watching programs yet, I need to concentrate Grin I’m looking forward to something a bit more colourful next.

@SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound we exchanged on Friday. Our third attempt at exchanging. Still no crojo but hopefully it’ll come back as we complete and get settled.

bruffin · 12/11/2023 12:30

@SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound
That weaving is amazing!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/11/2023 12:49

Beautiful weaving @SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound ! I went to my guild meeting yesterday. I'm enjoying it more and more. Such a lot of interesting women to talk to and learn from, and lovely projects and techniques to look at! There was a fantastic speaker at yesterday's meeting. Zoe Fletcher from The Wool Library. She did her PhD on the 72 British pure breeds of sheep and she promotes the use of British wool and the idea of labelling it as single varieties, detailing its properties and qualities for different types of products.

People will pay more for materials with a history and provenance, which should help farmers get a fair price for their fleeces and stop them just burning it because it's not worth the money to process it. Crazy that we have millions of sheep with quality wool, but we pay so much money to have wool imported from abroad!

Apologies for the sheep-based rant Grin

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/11/2023 12:50

I bought a poster of the 72 breeds!

@SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound I'm seriously impressed by the weaving!

@AllProperTeaIsTheft the talk sounds fascinating I love the poster.

@WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally do you have long till completion? We had a week between exchange and completion because that was what everyone else in the chain wanted. It was a bit of a mad panic getting everything ready.

I haven't done much of anything recently as MIL fell and we've been up and down the motorway every weekend to make sure she's OK. She seems a bit better now so hopefully we can actually be at home next weekend. I've got a half knitted simple sweater that I've picked up again and I've promised myself some nicely complicated fair isle once things calm down.

MerylSqueak · 13/11/2023 06:40

I love the weaving @SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound and the pterodactyl @tizwozliz .

Beautiful gloves coming along there @SparkleHard . I love Purl Soho patterns.

WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally · 13/11/2023 08:24

@StillNiceCardigan someone in the chain wanted two weeks between exchange and completion due to getting family to help them. With the delay to exchange again it’s ended up as just under 2 weeks but two weekends in there. I’ve also got quite a bit of annual leave left, due to saving it for hopefully moving. We’re also getting the removals to pack 90% of the house the day before. It’s just too much to pack with a toddler, 2 dogs and no family help nearby. So it doesn’t feel like too much of a mad panic. At the minute at least. There is definitely stuff to do but it does feel manageable.

Glad your MIL is on the mend. Spending time going up and down motorways is exhausting, especially when you’re worrying about a family member. Hopefully you get some time to work on your fair isle soon.

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 15/11/2023 20:52

Oh congratulations @WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally! I’m so pleased for you!

Sorry, I did think I’d replied at the time but it doesn’t seem to have posted Confused

That sounds wonderful @AllProperTeaIsTheft! I’ve heard her interviewed and it was so interesting. I love the poster. I’m getting more involved in my guild and I’m really enjoying it too. It costs a lot to get speakers over to NI because we’ve got to pay for flights and accommodation so we’re looking into zoom talks at the moment. I’m quite interested in the certificates they offer but have no brain space for them atm!

Thanks for the nice comments on my scarf SmileI got the scarf finished last night and it was dry when I got in tonight. The tassels will probably go once I’ve worked out how to hem it without it unravelling. I think a straight edge would be nice.

Hi new here, I’ve been crocheting for a few and got some circular knitting machines a couple of months ago (not used them really as lacking inspiration of what to make). Anyway I am looking at putting a punch needle kit on my Xmas list. Does anyone do this? I’ve seen YouTube videos of people punching the designs on to tote bags etc. what else can you make with punch needle designs. How do you secure the wool from coming in done once completed.

sorry lots of questions I just love a new hobby 😊

LucyLoopyLu · 16/11/2023 21:53

Hello all. I'm still trucking on with crochet as the new hobby. It's hard not to buy all the things isn't it?

I'm really enjoying it for the most part. I've done quite a lot of things that I've done to practice stitches etc. and then pulled them all apart afterwards.

I got a bit fed up with the jumper I started because I did the number of rows it said on the pattern but it was nowhere near long enough! So I feel like I don't trust it now. But will need to pick it back up as I've done about a third of the whole thing and feels a waste to not finish.

I'm going go try and do some snowflakes for Christmas decorations soon.

I'm also thinking of doing the Janie Crow sunshine and showers blanket in the new year so I can practice lots of different stitches. I think my mum might like the finished object as a present as well if I don't want to keep it. Does anyone recommend any other similar projects?

GlowWine · 17/11/2023 11:36

Wow @SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound lovely scarf, love the herringbone (?) pattern. I only ever think of bigger (utilitarian) items when I think about weaving 🙂so thank you for educating me.

I'm still about and still knitting like mad, and spending less time online! I have just finished my WestKnits Geogradient MKAL shawl (spoiler alert), just in time because the house is cold and I'm sitting here wearing wooly socks, cardigan, fingerless gloves and shawl I knitted!
My next project will have to be socks again, as I'm travelling a bit in a fortnight and want to take it with me. After all the self-striping yarns I have a nice ball of solid purple, hopefully that will make the pattern show up better. The one I have in mind is the Elementary Watson Socks by Sherry Menton.
But after that I'm planning another cardigan, top down raglan construction, but that's as far as I got with the planning.

I want to join in this friendly chat
I am crocheting a cardigan for my son. Making it as I go alond and finding quite mind bending the necessity of adjusting my thinking to bulk yarn he decided to go for. So much harder in making adjustments for the neckline.

GlowWine · 18/11/2023 10:35

Hello @talknomore nice to 'meet' you. That sounds like very interesting project, making a freestyle cardigan. I guess crochet is slightly better suited to this approach? Apart from not being able to crochet, I don't think I have ever knitted a big project without a pattern.

I have just started another pair of socks, definitely using a pattern because I'm attempting a new heel type, although at least for socks I know now how many stitches give me the right fit etc.

Hello all. Where is the knitting community now on the internet. Feels like lots of people have shutdown or moved on. I used to like listening to knitting podcasts like shinybees. Seems since ravelry was cancelled everything's disappeared. What's the latest crazes in knitting? Thanks

NonMiDispiace · 19/11/2023 10:18

@GlowWine that’s a lovely pattern, I enjoy knitting socks too.
I haven’t done any patterned ones because I wonder how comfortable they are to actually wear? I’d hate to find out they rub or feel uncomfortable 🥴

GlowWine · 19/11/2023 10:45

Hi @NonMiDispiace (like your name!), generally I've not done any lacy ones, but so far I've found all my socks comfortable, but of course your experience may be different. I've mostly done plain 2x2 ribbing though, using self-striping yarns, so they're a bit more stretchy for a better fit. Patterns made just from knit/purl stitches should not affect comfort either, and the narrow cables / slipped stitches I've tried so far (in squishy yarn) made no difference to my feet.

NonMiDispiace · 19/11/2023 12:01

Thank you @GlowWine , I will definitely be knitting patterned ones next!

Lots of people are still on Ravelry! I mostly follow lots of Instagram knitting accounts.

Was Ravelry cancelled / is that on the horizon?? I only knew about it for patterns rather than chat, but I just looked and found a huge thread about funny knitters’ commandments that will keep me going for aaaages, so thank you for prompting me to check it out!

I’ve just finished two lace projects (beanie and scarf) so cast on an Icelandic cardigan kit recommended by someone on here. Am in the boring/soothing section of the main colour body at the moment.

bruffin · 19/11/2023 12:26

I still use Raverly a lot

GlowWine · 19/11/2023 12:45

I too use Ravelry for patterns etc, and never really used the forums so can't comment if anything has changed. I'm not on IG or FB but I do hang out on mastodon, where following the hashtag #knitting opened up a whole new world for me.

Cherrypi · 19/11/2023 16:19

I meant a lot of the forums I followed on ravelry flounced. I use it for patterns still. Not tried mastodon. It just seems a bit more disparate now and cautious. Maybe I just need to explore Instagram more.
