Oh my, the last thread got full! Hope you all find me. The title is rubbish.

Anyway. I'm off to decorate the thread.

How hard is it to change your crochet technique? I learned watching Bella Coco mostly but never got on with the whole catch the yarn with the hook thing, mostly I loop it over with my other hand almost like I’m knitting. It does the job but I’m constantly losing my crojo as I’m mega slow and it takes me aaaaaaaaaages to get anything finished. I’d love to be able to do it “properly” and work on projects quicker but I feel like I’m sort of set in my ways now, and every time I try my stitches are all loose and sloppy and it looks awful.

I do this too. I'm always fascinated watching YouTube tutorials when people do it all in one fluid motion but I use my other hand to loop the yarn over the hook, like a knitter, I find it so much more intuitive and it gives me better control over the tension of my stitches.

I tried it the other way and ended up with baggy, saggy stitches, kept dropping the stitch etc, so I am sticking to my own way. The end result is the same, and I can crochet very fast like this so I guess there is no "right" or "wrong" way to crochet.
I also hold the hook in my hand very differently than a lot of people I have seen.
Maybe I am weird.
But then again I've been told all my life I hold my pen/pencil "wrong" too.

@Uncooperativefingers I’m very slowly doing mosaic crochet now. I find it easy enough but I do find it slow going because I’m trying to be aware of my tension and work in the back and third loop to stop it pulling. Mine is leaning to the right slightly but I’ve googled and people say it tends to sort itself out when you add a double border, so fingers crossed. I’ve already frogged once because of the lean and feeling like it isn’t right makes me want to frog again so I’m very unmotivated with it.

@StillNiceCardigan congratulations to your DD!

@SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound when do you start your new job?

Keep your fingers crossed for me… I should finally be exchanging on my house tomorrow! And the preferred removal firm who feels like they will be the least judgey about the size of my yarn stash are free on the proposed completion dates!

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 22/10/2023 14:27

Ohh, best of luck @WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally!

I actually started this week. It's been great so far, I'm really enjoying it. It's one of those with a training course for 9 weeks then an interview at the end of it so we were doing presentation skills and some technical skills this week, its been very interesting.

Hmmm If it's overlay mosaic (a brand new strand of wool every row, working from right to left every row) it shouldn't really lean. I've made a massive mosaic blanket which took hundreds of hours. I'd be happy to take a look at it if you wanted to post up? Or you can pm me a pic (but let me know and I'll go in get it on browser).

My first mosaic project, I cut the bottom section off as my tension tightened up so much with confidence.

Long time lurker, I've been here from the beginning of these threads.

I'm halfway through blanket number 6 in Bernat Blanket, the picture below is number 5 I did for ds & his husband for their new flat.

Good morning everyone, just checking in. Been knitting quite a lot to kind of keep up (not really) with the Knitalong I'm taking part in, after starting from scratch a week into the project. I'm doing the Stephen West Geogradient MKAL, Spoiler alert for my photo! I've been staying off social media to avoid spoilers myself.

@AllProperTeaIsTheft Have fun with the crochet club, sounds like you're doing a great job, but wow 30mins that is a challenge!

@WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally I've got everything crossed for your exchange today! And that the completion dates are confirmed as planned. Nearly there now...

Halfway through a Sincerely Louise kit I bought at Ally Pally. Knitted starfish for my DS who is a massive Octonauts fan and currently interested in marine animals.

Hello, can I join? I've been knitting for about three years and recently learnt to crochet too!

I ordered a load of new yarn last week and it arrived yesterday (I should've held off as I'm supposed to be going to Hobbycraft to spend my birthday voucher on Friday but I got excited!) so I've got new projects!

I've started crocheting a hexi-cardi for my friend's baby which is looking gorgeous! I need to figure out the sizing though - at the moment I'm just going by eye and thinking "nope, she's bigger than that!" and doing another round!

I've also got yarn for some fingerless gloves for me (I made one with leftover sock yarn and it fits perfectly but there's no enough left to make the second one, so I ordered some different sock yarn to make a whole pair) and also for a baby cardigan for a collegue.

Sitoff · 25/10/2023 09:07

Finished my Winwick Socks in colour change yarn and pleased with the end result.
I like working on a project that has different colours so onto stranded colourwork. Love the calming colours @Nat6999 of your blanket but going bold for a small project here. Started some mittens and pleased with the regularity of the floats. Like you @WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally I still have a tension problem. Were going to be mismatched mittens anyway - now going to be different shape as well as pattern! How do people relax enough while counting to not have these issues?

I love those socks, @Sitoff ! Awww - I miss making socks, but I've got too many other projects on the go!

Hi, a a relatively newbie to crochet I have been following these threads with interest. I am currently making this granny square blanket:
https://www.allaboutami.com/cozy-days-daisy-blanket/. I have made all the daisies and about to turn them into squares.

Have any of you opinions as to whether the join as you go method gives a good finish or if I would be better joining them once I've made all the squares? Would also welcome tips on joining, have watched plenty of youtube vids but it's good to hear from folk on this thread. Thanks!

Hi @Cherubimbum that's very pretty. I've never tried join as you go, I try to avoid anything that requires joining because I hate it so much. But I do like the look you get from a slip stich join.

Hopefully my picture of 'Sophie' will attach. I've done 84 rounds. There's 113 before the optional bits which I'm not planning on doing.

Thanks and love your blanket @CrochetBug. I am thinking the next one I make will be one that doesn't need joining but don't want to think too much about that or I might accidentally press the buy button for more wool and not finish my current blanket. I am determined to finish one project before I start the next!

I don't like whip stitch so thinking if not doing join as you go I would opt for slip stitch.

bruffin · 02/11/2023 08:47

Finished my chunky caron jumper. I gave it a rest over summer but it is a quick knit and no sewing😁

GlowWine · 02/11/2023 09:09

Yay @bruffin I love that! Is it top-down construction? Is that quite straightforward? I'm eyeing up patters for my next project and wonder about trying that, so there's no making up at the end.

bruffin · 02/11/2023 09:13

@GlowWine
It's top down and really easy. On Raverlry it's Lazy Sunday Sweater. I used chunky caron cake , took about 2.5 balls probably because I lined up the wool when i joined for the sleeves

MerylSqueak · 02/11/2023 09:25

Oo I might do that too! Quick, easy and no sewing us right up my street.

Hello everyone. I can officially call myself a knitter again because I have finished my scarf I started in the summer. It's not quite right though so I'm fed up. I knitted it with Wool and the Gang Crazy Sexy Wool thinking it would be a big treat to Knot with expensive wool. It wasn't. It's just too chunky so it doesn't lie well. I went up to size 20 needles and restarted it 3 times. Humph.

I'm knackered and stressed at the moment but it's made me realise I'm happier when I'm knitting, even if it's just a bit.

It's lovely to see all your projects. I particularly love that German stitch cowl. Gorgeous.

WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally · 03/11/2023 13:28

@TruthThatsHardAsSteel well if it isn’t going to straighten up with a border, I’m going to have to give up! Baby it’s meant for is already 4 months old! It might be something to pick up when I have more mental capacity and not at the moment. But here is a picture of the lean.

@CrochetBug are those the original colours for Sophie? I know you were
debating which colour set to use.

We didn’t exchange. Our buyers conveyancers, who are the in-house conveyancers, have massively fucked up. We’re hoping Tuesday we can actually exchange - assuming no more cock ups - but it is pretty much our last attempt at getting this house sale through. I’ve got some of my stash boxed up. Just in case. But mostly I’m just sad and tired.

StillNiceCardigan · 03/11/2023 15:57

@WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally sending good vibes and much sympathy to you. We failed to exchange four times thanks to our buyers mortgage company and then a mess up with the deposit they were paying. It was all very stressful and painful and I had so may sleepless nights. We got there in the end but its not an experience I'd be in a hurry to repeat.

WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally · 03/11/2023 17:29

@StillNiceCardigan thank you. My little bit of hope is that if everyone was ready to exchange and it failed but nobody has dropped out, then everyone really wants to move. I think the reason we’ve hung on for so long is because we can see ourselves in this house for the next 25 years (we’ll, we could probably never move but we’d be rattling around in it after 25 years) so hopefully we only have to do this once more! And not for a very long time. People keep trying to push us to do it on the last day of our mortgage offer but I just don’t trust any of the professionals involved enough to take that kind of risk.

It’s DD’s 2nd birthday soon. We haven’t got her present yet because it’s more stuff to take with us. I’ve got her a little present from the house if we ever do manage to move.

CrochetBug · 03/11/2023 18:55

@WeCanLiveLikeJackAndSally yes, it's the scheepjes cotton 8 colour pack. It was so similar to what I would have chosen that I decided to just go with it.
Sorry to hear about the house stuff being so stressful.

We went away this week to an airBnB. There was a lovely lamp and crocheted 'sea' in the lounge.

I’ve given up on my big project and cast on Purl SoHo’s very classic gloves instead. I like the idea of knitting myself a jumper, but the reality of weeks and weeks of doing the same stitch isn’t quite so appealing.

I’m using a ball of the very first sock yarn I ever bought. I wasn’t paying attention at the time and thought I needed a ball for each sock, so this one has been sitting in my stash for a while! The socks I made with the other ball are still going strong, so I have high hopes for this one 😊

I've finally finished something!

Still a long way to go if I want to meet my new year's resolution of only having 3 wips by the end of the year
