Personally I'd keep going and make a really long scarf, but then I've got one that's about 10ft long somewhere Grin

If you do decide to frog it, I'd either use mattress stitch or a flat slip stitch join.

@lazy I'm very jealous of all your spinning workshops! I need some decent in laws!

lazylinguist · 11/10/2021 16:18

I feel like I'm getting a bit obsessed with spinning! I did so much on the course that I keep absent-mindedly finding myself doing fibre-drafting movements with my fingers Confused. What a loon!

@FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack - I definitely want to have another go with your lovely drop spindles now that I have more of a feel for how to handle the fibre!

It's for the girls' dad - he's about 5'3" ish tall. My blanket scarves measure approx 170 cm (sloppily measured against the worktop I know is about 1m long) so maybe once it's on, it won't seem as long 🤷‍♀️ I do have a "normal" scarf about somewhere; I'll see how long that is & get to the end of these letters before I decide.

In the meantime, I'll google flat slip stitch.

lazylinguist · 11/10/2021 16:22

Cross-posted, @CrochetBug - yes, I feel a bit bad for them. Although MIL is nice enough, we don't entirely see eye-to-eye about a number of things (under the surface - we are very cordial outwardly), but she's a knitter and nobody in my family (since my granny) is remotely yarny. So I imagine she was pleased to have thought of something so ideal for me!

Cordial is good! My first set of "in-laws" (we weren't married) positively and actively hated me. Which is inconvenient as I'm the Mother of their grandchildren Grin

My other "in laws" (again, not actually married) were fucking lovely. I miss them as much as I miss my ex tbh. His Grandma and mum were both knitters and crocheters. His grandma actually used to have an online yarn shop so occasionally sent me skeins of interesting yarn.

Hopefully there is a beginner-intermediate session that you can swap too lazy.

I’m a fan of the long scarf… if I’m not crocheting it because I find scarves quite boring! As the stitches are already in, I’d just keep them in (although you do have to do the matching red block on the other side). I have a mega scarf from fat face that is longer than me. As it’s getting colder now, I need to find where it’s gone as it’s so warm.

lazylinguist · 11/10/2021 16:53

Hopefully there is a beginner-intermediate session that you can swap too lazy.

There isn't unfortunately. What I could do is swap it for a one-to-one 'focus on what you personally want to improve' session. I'd get less time for the equivalent cost, but it would be whatever I wanted.

Oh and it's only 25 mins away instead of 2 hours, so going for a few hours would be fine!

lucysmam · 11/10/2021 16:58

Grin @InTheNightWeWillWish I'll definitely be doing the matching block on the other side! My normal scarf measures about 170cm, plus tassles of maybe 4cm either side. So maybe it's not that long after all!

sophs29 · 11/10/2021 19:28

@lucysmam the scarf is looking great! I love a long scarf, especially if he's going to be holding it up at the football, it would be a great length!

Just wondered what you lovely lot think of this jumper? I would probably do it in more muted colours but do you think it's a bit too 'out there'? Also if anyone's seen a similar pattern cheaper or free then please let me know! I don't mind paying the price if it's a good pattern I'm going to wear, but just not sure!

lucysmam · 11/10/2021 19:33

Thanks @sophs29. That's true about holding it up!

I like the jumper, but I wouldn't be sure I'd wear it either. I'm still hunting for one for the green, so will keep an eye out for similar & pop them on here if I see any :)

I'm not sure how these will go in dk, but I'm going to attempt part of the Christmas village pattern I bought while I'm dithering about my own jumper.

NiceCardigan · 11/10/2021 19:39

I’d wear that jumper @sophs29 but I am going through a bit of a brightly coloured knitwear phase.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 11/10/2021 19:40

I did a couple of one to one classes after I did my beginner course lazy and I found them really useful, it went over what we’d already covered regarding fibre microns and preparation methods a bit but it was all good because it was a lot to take in the first time. I’m laughing at the absent minded drafting, you’re hooked 🤣

Don’t suppose anyone has been any good patterns for a Captain Jack Sparrow hat anywhere? I’ve not had any luck on Ravelry. Thought possibly by the time I make it it would be cheaper to buy one!

sophs29 · 11/10/2021 19:40

I was thinking of doing it in pastel colours and probably longer as I don't like anything cropped but not too sure! Think it would be a nice festive jumper if I used the right yarn for it! Just thought I'd enjoy making it more as the rows are varied rather than repeats!

Oh I remember you posting that little village before! It's stunning!

sophs29 · 11/10/2021 19:42

I actually love the colour way @NiceCardigan I just don't know if my usual clothes/shoes would go with it 😂 I suppose I could make a brighter one and then a more muted one ☺️ thought it could almost be a good stash buster too?

InTheNightWeWillWish · 11/10/2021 19:42

lazy focussing on what you want might be a better use anyway, especially as it’s so close.

sophs it’s a pretty jumper, not one for me as I prefer a slightly longer jumper. I think it would be quite nice in the same colour palette.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 11/10/2021 19:43

Cross-posted with you sophs so you’ve already hit on the fact that I’d like it longer Grin

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 11/10/2021 19:47

Oh I love that sophs!

lucysmam · 11/10/2021 20:23

The village does not work in dk, I need thread. Not sure what "bedspread weight crochet thread" is, but I'm off to a college open day with dd1 at the weekend so we'll nip in one of the yarn shops in town and see what's to be had.

I do have a ball that I think will be right, it was my mums though so I try to use it sparingly.

I prefer a longer jumper too, not into all the cropped stuff that's about lately. Who the heck wants to freeze their belly button off Confused

tizwozliz · 11/10/2021 20:27

@lucysmam - I'd look at DMC Petra for the village. It comes in 3 weights, 3,5&8 with 8 being the smallest. I use a 1.75 or 2mm hook with DMC Petra 3

CrochetBug · 11/10/2021 20:30

I love that jumper @sophs29! I'd definitely make it longer though. That's the beauty of making our own jumpers. They actually fit. I like mine long enough to cover my huge belly, but i also have really short arms so sleeves are always too long. Not any more Grin

sophs29 · 11/10/2021 20:34

Ok, you've all twisted my arm, I'm going to get it 😂 If anything, I'll brighten up the school playground at nursery drop off 😂
You definitely know you're getting older when you look at people and wonder how they're not freezing their tits off 😂

@FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack have you tried YouTube for the jack sparrow hat? I sometimes find the most random/great patterns on there I can't find anywhere else!

lucysmam · 11/10/2021 20:36

Thanks @tizwozliz, I'll have a look now. Having googled for the equivalent UK hook size, I think the size 3 would be about right.

From having tried the little bit with the dk, I think they'll work up quite speedily!

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 11/10/2021 20:42

Ooh, I didn't think of YouTube! Thanks sophs I'm off for a browse Smile I would totally wear that jumper in those colours. I wonder how hard that pattern is?

sophs29 · 11/10/2021 20:45

Good luck browsing @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack ! As for the pattern, I've just downloaded it, it looks fairly easy, however it's written in UK terms and I learnt in US terms so I'll just have to print it and scribble how I refer to the stitches on the pattern so I don't get confused! Also I think I have enough yarn in my stash to make it already so that's a bonus!
