Thank you! MIL wears a lot of pale denim and oversize white shirts. I thought it would go.

And here finally is the scarf/ shawl @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack helped me with. The second pic is the v shape she helped me with. It's an odd sort of scarfy shawl though. I'm not sure what it will be like to wear.

@MerylSqueak that shawl is gorgeous! Love the navy with the other colours! And the scarf/shawl looks so soft! What yarn did you use?

MerylSqueak · 11/09/2021 20:08

It is very soft and has quite a nice sheen to it. It's a bit splitty though. It's Lion Brand Coboo.

StarfishDish · 11/09/2021 20:56

Hi! I hope I'm okay to join on this thread?!

Can anybody recommend any crochet gift ideas for Christmas? I'd like to make something for the staff at my daughter's nursery :)

lucysmam · 11/09/2021 21:17

@MerylSqueak the scarf/shawl looks similar in size to the sort of ones I like. I sort of wrap it round my shoulders how you have it laid out -very toasty & comfy.

Hi @StarfishDish :) How about fingerless gloves? - practical whilst outside & still keep the majority of their fingers warm. I love mine on the yard at school - don't have to take them off to do things.

CrochetBug · 11/09/2021 21:49

Hi @StarfishDish I was also going to suggest fingerless gloves/wrist warmers. Or a mug cozy.

NiceCardigan · 11/09/2021 22:11

I’ve just been looking at a thread in style and beauty and this was shared

www.wyselondon.co.uk/products/romy-multi-shade-cardigan-multi

£220! We could be making a fortune!

NiceCardigan · 11/09/2021 22:13

I like this one www.hush-uk.com/rainbow-chunky-knit-cardigan-midnight-multi/000345-1659.html? I don’t think the yarn will run to £125 if I made my own version.

MerylSqueak · 11/09/2021 23:12

I've noticed a lot of lace stitch jumpers in the shops. Nice. Our hour has come!

CrochetBug · 11/09/2021 23:14

Sadly I've noticed people will pay a small fortune for something in a shop (either machine made or made in a sweat shop somewhere for pennies) but won't pay anything near the same for homemade items. Even though they are often better quality. Angry

InTheNightWeWillWish · 12/09/2021 06:54

I think there is also still that stigma that anything homemade is a little bit Mrs Wesley Christmas jumper! Even if someone wanted to pay me £120 for a jumper at the minute / my project list is too long as it is!

Lovely shawls meryl.

I’m trying to power through my random stripes blanket. I’m at the stage of ‘oh this will never be done, I should do something else’ but I’m trying to persevere. The colours in the photo are a bit off due to the lighting - I must start taking photos during the day rather than at night!

InTheNightWeWillWish · 12/09/2021 07:00

Oh I also bought some gorgeous yarn yesterday. It’s rowan softyak in a gorgeous pale grey. I’m itching to give up my blanket and move onto the hat. I’ve realised I’m incredibly fickle when it comes to crochet, I’m always ready to abandon a WIP when a nicer yarn comes along!

eitak22 · 12/09/2021 07:59

Another one here who is just getting used to being back at school, the 6am starts are a killer. Plus the heat this week has been difficult so haven't really wanted to crochet especially with blanket wool.

@CrochetBug sorry to hear you're not feeling great, hope the church cafe helps with structuring your day and the 8hr job does appear as sounds like it would be good.

lazylinguist · 12/09/2021 08:01

I was going to suggest mug cosies too, @StarfishDish - quick, simple and personalisable. Also, anyone dealing with toddlers always has trouble drinking a cup of tea while it's still hot!

I like that Hush cardigan, @NiceCardigan! Yes, it's a bit sad that people will pay shedloads of money for brand names but not for craftsmanship. Although... there is a lovely shop not far from me which sells all kinds of items made by local craftspeople. Some of the stuff is pretty expensive and it seems quite popular. It ranges from stuff made by local small established companies to talented amateurs who only make a few things.

StarfishDish · 12/09/2021 08:23

Thankyou for the suggestions! The mug cosies sound like a good idea, with hot chocolate sachets, candy canes and some mini gingerbread men in the mug.

Not long after I posted this, I thought Terry's Chocolate Orange covers too! Smile

There are some gorgeous things being made on this thread Grin

I like that one, it's wool and mohair too so it's not so much of a bad bargain really.

I do like being able to knit exactly what I want to wear in the colours I like.

MerylSqueak · 12/09/2021 08:44

@StarfishDish one of the first thins I made was a little envelope clutch. It was a bit faffy lining it but the knitting was very quick and you don't have to line. Could look really special if you have an oddment of lovely yarn. Also Christmas tree decorations perhaps.

@CrochetBug exactly. When I first started, everyone was telling me I should make a business out of it. Quite apart from the fact that I wouldn't want to knit for that, I quickly worked out that you'd scarcely be able to persuade people to cover the costs let alone the time taken. I'm similar though. I gave up making my own clothes when I realised they were far more expensive than things I could buy . Rather wish I hadn't now because I have lost confidence.

I often rule out projects because of the price of wool.

I love the sound of that shop @lazylinguist

@InTheNightWeWillWish persevere! The blanket will be great. I was eyeing up Softyak myself. Gorgeous yarn.

sophs29 · 12/09/2021 10:17

Haha I saw that post about the cardigan @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack there's some beautiful ones on that thread!

Had my second jab yesterday and feel so so ill today, can hardly move so definitely no crocheting for me this weekend! Hopefully it passes quickly!

NiceCardigan · 12/09/2021 12:44

I just knit for myself and people who I know will appreciate it I don’t think I you could make any money out of it if you count the time put in.

I’m planning my autumn projects. I’ve got a hat pattern lined up and maybe a cable sweater or even a sweater dress if I can find a pattern for one that isn’t too clingy.

MerylSqueak · 12/09/2021 14:16

This might make you giggle, crocheters included, though it's to do with knitting. Aren't we clever bunnies?

CrochetBug · 12/09/2021 14:30

I can't stop laughing at that @MerylSqueak Grin It reminds me of all the Google translate videos my dc are obsessed with.

As a failed knitter I feel Sky Knit and I might get along well Wink

InTheNightWeWillWish · 12/09/2021 14:37

starfish I love the idea of chocolate orange cozies! My grandma used to buy everyone a chocolate orange at Christmas and I did it a couple of times after my grandma died. I love the idea of adding a little cozy for everyone but my list of stuff to get done before Christmas is already pretty big! I might have to start my Christmas crochet in January to get done for next year.

meryl It still couldn’t quite get the hang of counting, but it did stop telling knitters to knit their hair into their projects. The AI might struggle with learning knitting patterns but it’s got further than I have on the hair front, I’m constantly pulling out hair from my crochet projects!

sophs hope you feel better soon!

tizwozliz · 12/09/2021 14:52

I made chocolate orange cozies a couple of years ago, they're quite quick to work up
