@CrochetBug I'm just about to eat my cake from the new shop round the corner, then go again.

Hopefully it'll be right this time. I think eliminating it altogether will throw the shape out slightly. Chain 1, then skip the 1st stitch to account for it will definitely throw the stitch count (which is right using all the fdc stitches & following the next row instructions). We'll see how it goes shortly.

lucysmam · 06/03/2021 22:02

I think I've finally done it! I'm just about to do row 4, before I call it a night, and see whether it is right.

lucysmam · 06/03/2021 22:51

Hmmm, the cable stitches have me flummoxed Confused My brain isn't computing how to work 2 fptc (us tc) behind the two fptc I've just done. It just doesn't make sense to me at all.

I've attached a pic - Is that what my first ones should look like?

Hmm. I've not done any cable, could you post a pic of the pattern so we can see what it's asking you to do?

I wonder if you're meant to go diagonally behind the previous raised stitches? As in behind the fp stitch but in front of the main body of work. Trying to picture cable in my head Grin

Littlehouseinthebigcity · 07/03/2021 06:28

@tizwozliz looks amazing! I have had a rotten cold this week and so haven't got any crochet or knitting done!
What are thoughts on gifts for other crafters? My friend is having a baby soon and Id love to make baby a cardigan but she's actually the one who taught me how to crochet years ago and is of course better than me!

InTheNightWeWillWish · 07/03/2021 08:01

littlehouse I think with handmade gifts it’s more he thought of it. The advantage of gifting to another crafter is they realise the time put in, not just in making it but picking the wool and pattern. She’ll know it’s given with love. But I’m hoping to gift something to my knitting mum soon, so I might not be a reliable source.

lucysmam · 07/03/2021 08:03

I'm going to get it out again later CrochetBug so I'll post a pic then. There are some Youtube videos too but the one I picked to watch moved at the speed of light 🙄 .

I'd still appreciate a gift from another crafter Littlehouse!

lucysmam · 07/03/2021 08:49

I've been googling & watching Youtube vids - it seems to be right from those so I shall carry on and see what it does when I get to the next row!

Hello all - please may I join as a knitting newbie? My granny taught me to knit as a child and for years I've been able to make anything square or rectangle based using garter stitch, but that's been pretty much the limit of my talents!

My husband bought me a Wool and the Gang kit for our seven year anniversary a few weeks ago (wool anniversary apparently) and I really enjoyed it. It was great as it had simple written instructions with matching videos online. I was able to learn to purl and follow a basic pattern including rib stitch, stocking stitch, decreasing and pompom making to make a bobble hat for myself, which I'm really chuffed with!

I'm looking to put my newfound knitting chops to good use and build on this to make other non-purely rectangular items but am a bit lost what to try next. Ideally I'd like to make something practical, either for myself or 2 year old (who wears 3-4 clothes). But the free patterns I've seen online have seemed too tricky or too easy - there are so many it's hard to sift through and find one that's right for my stage of not total beginner but hardly proficient! There are some cute looking patterns for simple baby jumpers for a few quid on etsy but I have no idea how easy they would be in reality as I can't see the pattern without buying! I've never used circular needles for example.

Any thoughts wise knitters of mumsnet? Fully appreciate I might just need to devote more time to research but thought I'd ask here just in case you may have spotted something ideal for me in your travels :)

Welcome @Jennyz123! Have you looked on Ravelry? It has a bewilderingly huge selection of patterns, but the good thing is that on the advanced search function, you can select by loads of aspects- difficulty level, type of item, for kids/adults, plus lots of types of method/construction.

Welcome Jenny! You need a Ravelry account, it's a giant database of knitting and crochet patterns and it's free to join www.ravelry.com/

You can filter patterns by free/ paid/ type/ weight of wool and pretty much anything you can think of! Then you can go view projects people have made from the pattern.

You can't go far wrong with Tin Can Knits free Patterns though if there's something that takes your fancy from there tincanknits.com/patterns/free?o=p

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 07/03/2021 09:45

Oops, took so long to type I cross posted Smile

I finished my brioche lace jumper last night and I'm thrilled with it Grin the seams are neat enough that I can reverse it too. I'm not a massive fan of reverse stocking stitch but I like it well enough with the mohair fuzz.

That is honestly one of my favourite hand-knitted things I've ever seen, @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack. Just spectacular! And quite apart from the gorgeous pattern and the neatness of your knitting, the colours are absolutely stunning! Well... it gives me something to aspire to!

Oooh yes thank you, this is exactly what I needed! Will delve into this over nap time. Thanks so much!

NiceCardigan · 07/03/2021 10:54

@Flavia that’s fab! Brioche is on my list of things to try but nothing that ambitious.

bruffin · 07/03/2021 11:49

Thats gorgeous Flavia!

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 07/03/2021 12:19

Blush thank you! Grin It is so unbelievably cosy, but naturally now I've finished two jumpers it's sunny here and too warm for them Grin

It really is deceptively simple, it's just two big squares for the front and back seamed together and it's one brioche row then 3 plain rows the whole way up.

lucysmam · 07/03/2021 12:42

Flavia that looks brilliant! Hopefully you'll get chance to wear it soon 🤞

tizwozliz · 07/03/2021 12:45

Thanks @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack you've guaranteed us a scorching spring now :-)

lucysmam · 07/03/2021 13:24

I think I need my spot in the counting corner back 🙄

sophs29 · 07/03/2021 13:28

Wow @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack that's impressive! Absolutely stunning!

InTheNightWeWillWish · 07/03/2021 13:31

flavia that’s lovely. I I’ve the colours and thanks for guaranteeing us a lovely spring Wink

My CAL is 99.9% done. I need to finish off and sew my ends in but my scissors and needles are under a dust sheet while DH paints the living room, so that’s a 5 minute job later this evening. It’s massive! For reference, it’s laid on a king sized bed, so no wonder it took me so long to finish. There are a few mistakes in the border but the only person who will notice is me and the blanket won’t be out all the time.

lazylinguist · 07/03/2021 13:46

@InTheNightWeWillWish - your blanket looks gorgeous!

I think I need to repeat about another 6 stitch sections for mine to be as long as I want it. I really fancy putting a fringe/tassels on each end, but not sure how that would work with a border. Confused I'm wondering whether I could maybe do a (plain, few rows of dc) border on the sides only, and put a fringe on each end. Anyone done that before?
