Hi everyone, I'm new here, @CrochetBug invited me!

Am I supposed to introduce myself? I feel like I've entered a big room and everyone's stopped what they're doing to stare at me.

Im a Student Midwife from the NW. My nana taught me to knit when I was 6, but I much prefer to crochet as I find it less fiddly. I've dabbled in it for a while but never really finished any projects. However, I finished my first baby blanket last night and am really keen to keep going and experiment with more colours and stitches.Grin

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 22/04/2021 18:16

Hi badat! Welcome!
We're staring at your project, not you, honest Grin a baby blanket sounds lovely!

CrochetBug · 22/04/2021 18:17

Oh yay @badatcrochet1996 you found us. Please take a seat. Excuse the mess. I like to decorate by throwing yarn around Grin

lazylinguist · 22/04/2021 18:28

Hi @badatcrochet1996 ! You will need to change that username after you've been hanging around on here for a while and honed your skills! Grin I'm in the NW too, though not from the NW (southern incomer Shock ). @CrochetBug - it's not mess, it's... decor!

I'm under my (crochet) blanket feeling a bit sorry for myself with the post-vaccine effects. As soon as my last dose of paracetamol wears off I get all achy and shivery again.

badat I’d turn around now and leave the group... it’s a terrible influence! You’ll find yourself with more works in progress than you’ve had hot dinners and a yarn stash so big you might need to move house! And they’ll normalise it! Even encourage it Shock

Nobody is staring at you, just trying to work out what is in your stash Grin You’ll definitely get some inspiration for different colours and stitches here. For me, the problem is not getting swayed by all the stitches and actually focussing on what I’m doing.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 22/04/2021 18:34

lazy haha I’m northerner incomer in the south, we can balance each other out! (Also NW).

Sorry you’re feeling so rubbish post vaccine. Hopefully it’ll only be today 🤞

badatcrochet1996 · 22/04/2021 18:42

Ah what a lovely welcome, thanks all!

@InTheNightWeWillWish that's good advice,
I've just seen @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack blue and orange jumper upthread and am in awe!

I think I'm going to start on some granny squares so I can try a few different designs out till I find my feet a bit more.

NiceCardigan · 22/04/2021 18:49

I’m from the NW but living in Hertfordshire so another displaced person.

I had to write off a few days post vaccine lazy as felt rubbish but once I was over that it was fine.

I had my job interview today which felt a bit strange doing it from a holiday cottage. The WiFi held up and hopefully it was ok. The weather has been fab in Devon if you can get in a sheltered spot. I have a sunburnt face!

lazylinguist · 22/04/2021 18:56

Excellent! Kind of like an exchange programme. Grin

Hope you get the job, @NiceCardigan (if you want it!). I've heard nada from the other school I applied to, so I assume they're not interested. Sad

Are you going to teach me all the swear words of your homeland? Grin

Hopefully you hear soon nicecardigan and fingers crossed you got the job.

NiceCardigan · 22/04/2021 19:13

I’ll find out early next week if I’ve got it so not long to wait.

I finally heard back from a job I applied to in January to say they didn’t want to take my application further - I felt like emailing back to say well I guessed that. It’s hard to keep putting in the time on applications so I sympathise lazy

CrochetBug · 22/04/2021 19:16

Northerners in the South?
Southerners in the North?
Heavens what is this madness. Grin

I live about a mile from the hospital I was born in Hmm. And I barely leave the house. Although that's nothing to be proud of ConfusedBlushGrin. And after finding out how cheap houses are in Newcastle I seriously considered moving!

Good luck for the job @NiceCardigan. I've got every thing crossed for you.

@lazylinguist it's their loss! DS1 was teaching me French earlier. Well, he taught me that they have a word for when you slap someone around the face with your penis. I mean, why wouldn't they Grin

sophs29 · 22/04/2021 20:04

Welcome @badatcrochet1996 enjoy us looney tunes Grin

@CrochetBug I live about 20 minutes away from the hospital I was born in and had my 2 DS's there too Grin and I love what your DS is teaching you hahaha that made me laugh!

lucysmam · 22/04/2021 21:34

Hi @badatcrochet1996 :)

I'm just popping in with a blanket update - it's very very nearly half as long as dd2's bed! But I've picked up an extra stitch along the way about 8 rows back, the same as I did when I started 🙄 I'm not frogging it...but I am vaguely thinking about what sort of border to do.

The pattern calls for a yo-blo-slst but I think I've seen enough of those for the moment! Pinterest here I come...

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 22/04/2021 22:11

badatcrochet1996 awh, thank you Blush

I totally missed your post about Hobbycraft CrochetBug, that shop is a black hole for time, it just vanishes as you browse Grin

Oh that sucks lazy Sad For the shivering I was told I could stagger ibuprofen and paracetamol every 2hrs if that helps any...

Fingers crossed for you NiceCardigan!

InTheNight why do you say it like our enabling is a bad thing? Grin

I live 10 mins away from the hospital I was born in! But I live on a tiny island so everything is only ever max 20 mins away anyway...
InTheNightWeWillWish · 23/04/2021 06:16

flavia because it is! Grin I wanted to buy some wool the other day just because I’ve found even more patterns I want to do and don’t have the yarn for them. I told DH who looked at the balls on the sofa and the balls in the organza bag on the floor next to the sofa and then opened the cupboard to where the rest of my stash was hiding and gave me the Hmm I do probably need to rein it in but buying wool has kept me happy through lockdown, sorting through my delivery, organising it! I am having a look at the yarn shops and the lady on the market again this weekend so I’ll probably bump up my stash a bit - see bad influence Grin

lazylinguist · 23/04/2021 07:14

Glad to see your ds is teaching you really useful French words, @CrochetBug Grin

@petridishmystery - that sounds amazing, living on a tiny island! The idea really appeals to me, although I imagine it wouldn't be for everyone!

It looks as if we are nearly at the end of thread 4 Shock. I'm not very good at thinking of interesting or funny thread titles, so if anyone has any ideas.... @CrochetBug - I hope you've got plenty of spare yarn hanging around to decorate the new thread! Grin

Btw I've woken up feeling fully recovered from the post-vaccine effects, which is lucky as I'm actually teaching today. Friday is my favourite teaching day - Zoom lesson with the lovely lady to whom I teach German, and Spanish at the lovely primary school in my village, a minute's walk from my house!

OP posts:
FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 23/04/2021 09:31

Oh good, glad to hear it!

You know I really regret not paying more attention to French in school, I loved German but I was an idiot in French and didn't try... So much learning at my fingertips and now I'd kill for that time and opportunity since we spend most of our holidays there and I've made some really embarrassing errors Grin

InTheNightWeWillWish · 23/04/2021 10:03

I did French and Spanish at school, although I didn’t learn the word that crochetbug’s DS did. They were too similar for my poor little brain and I’d switch between the two quite clumsily. In my French oral exam, the teacher asked me the question in French and I answered in Spanish. I then got “en Francais sil vous plait” 😒 Surely I should get bonus points for understanding the French and converting the answer from English to Spanish?

lucysmam · 23/04/2021 11:01

I was really good at French at school, should probably have pursued it but didn't 🤷‍♀️

I've just been to town for tights for dd1 and pants for dd2. No time for the yarn shop :( the queue's to get into Primarni were long-ish & the ones to pay in there were just stupid. Should have waited a while longer maybe.

I had a whistle-stop tour of Poundland too but not enough time to work out how much pink sparkly yarn to buy for my jackety thingy so just grabbed some more rainbow for now.

Maybe I'll pop in at the weekend. On my way home to change massive & furry Uggs for pumps or ballerina shoes before heading back to school. It was cold at 7:30am, not so much now!

lazylinguist · 23/04/2021 12:37

@InTheNightWeWillWish - that's why it's a bit daft in some ways for schools to teach French and Spanish rather than French and German as most used to. It's very easy to constantly get French and Spanish mixed up unless you are really well established in one of them before you start learning the other. Actually, Spanish and German would work well. I've realised since teaching myself Spanish that its reputation for being easier than French is actually very true!

OP posts:
tizwozliz · 23/04/2021 13:49

I did French and German at school. All mostly forgotten 25 years on despite the A*'s! I did a beginner's Spanish course at an adult education college and that was far easier than either. I'm sure introducing French as a first foreign language puts people off, Spanish is much more straightforward imo.

I've been doing Danish on Duolingo since the start of the pandemic, still can't get my mouth to make the right sounds though!
