I did considered safety pinning them. I think when I started out I thought I'd remember what was what. I didnt plan to have such a massive stash Blush
Some balls I can work out based on what I made with them, but I have some colours in Aran and chunky and the difference isn't always obvious Grin
I've got dark grey that I could add to my CAL colours. I think that might work. Confused

CrochetBug · 22/01/2021 21:46

The 2 I took out were a pale purple and a bright yellow.

They are mostly full balls, and I have more of some of them. Including about 10 of one of the blues Hmm
I think I'm going to go with what I have, and if I run out then I'll have to do another cupboard dive Grin

carolinesbaby · 22/01/2021 21:57

I did little cardboard strips wrapped in bits of yarn so I remembered the colours.

Not totally caught up but you can make your own yarn bowl.

Examples a bulldog clip on the edge of a bowl, run the wool through the top of the clip. Or put it in a colander and pull the wool out through. Tupperware with hole in and the wool poking out.

Giggle diy yarn bowl, loads of ideas

I get my husband to ball my yarn most of the time so it's a nice round ball

lazylinguist · 23/01/2021 07:55

Welcome to Scoobygang7 - you'll soon be knitting all sorts of things!

lucysmam - I have a nice wooden yarn bowl, but I don't always remember to get it out and use it!

CrochetBug - I love your colours! As for the label thing, I always used to lose mine and wish I'd kept them. I've started poking a hole in the label and tying the end of the yarn through it when I put a partly-used ball back in my stash.

Btw, in my slightly bleary morning state, I forgot to say "It's CAL day!" Let the blanket commence!

MutteringDarkly · 23/01/2021 09:24

Been reading along with you guys and looking forward to seeing your CAL! I cannot crochet, but have a knitting project I should be doing I'm making progress on. Life is bonkers here so my aim is one section a month. I'm using sampler squares from a few different blanket patterns. I had intended not to buy more yarn, and to work from the stash, but, um.... yeah that didn't work out Grin

lazylinguist · 23/01/2021 09:32

Another new person! Welcime, MutteringDarkly! Clearly we need to build our stashes up until it's varied enough to rely on as a source for things we want to make. And to do that, we need to buy more yarn. Grin Perfectly logical and reasonable, right?

I keep thinking I'd love to know how many people are on these threads, but it would take ages to check...

Myshitisreal I have an ice cream tub I could re-purpose once the eggs that are currently in it become cake. Good thinking batman! I'm pretty sure dd2 would be happy to get the paints out and decorate it for me Grin

sophs29 · 23/01/2021 09:42

Happy CAL day everyone Grin I managed to make a start early this morning when DS1 thought it would be good to wake up whilst the owls were still hooting haha! surprised how quickly it's coming together! I always thought blankets took forever but these rows aren't too bad!

Also impressed with everyone's little colour charts! I've just written mine down on the back of the pattern Grin

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 23/01/2021 09:57

Morning all! Looking forward to seeing all your pics for the CAL, no pressure Wink

I've nearly done with my sock so I'm bribing the children with TV until I get the toe finished then start on the next one. We started watching Ghosts on iPlayer after they go to bed and it's slowed me down, it took me 4 goes to pick up the gusset stiches because I was laughing so much.

MindyMalik · 23/01/2021 10:15

I haven't started mine but have everything ready I did have an early start but wanted to start whilst house was clean so once I start I don't have to move unless it's to feed or change baby.lol

lazylinguist · 23/01/2021 10:27

We love Ghosts, Flavia,! Can't wait for series 3!

He's fab tizwoz. How long did he take you? @lucysmam

This one was quite quick, i started on Wednesday evening and finished yesterday evening so i think probably 8 hours all in ? It's one of the easier patterns I've done as not a lot of shaping or fiddly bits so works up pretty quickly. Although I did have to do the dress twice

I've had a request to make a viking doll, I can't find a pattern i like but don't think i have the headspace to write my own right now.

I'm thinking about starting some placemats today, which probably means i'll spend all day looking at patterns/designs but not actually doing any crochet

lazylinguist · 23/01/2021 10:42

I haven't started yet either, Mindy. I've been awake since early (thanks, puking cat!) but, unusually for me, am not dressed yet Blush . I've had a few nights of rubbish sleep, not helped by a few glasses of wine last night so am on a go-slow this morning.

However, we woke up to snow this morning, which is lovely! I only slightly regretfully opted out of dh's proposed 10 mile walk, which he's now doing with ddog. So after I've had a reviving shower, got dressed, put a wash on and had a quick tidy, I shall be settling down to start tye CAL!

View from my bedroom window attached!

You can't see very well from that photo, but beyond the neighbour's car and house across the road is a view of the estuary. In clear conditions you can see the mountains beyond that. They have snow on them most of the time at the moment, so we can often see snow from thevillage even when there's none near us!

Sorry - a bit off-topic!

tizwozliz · 23/01/2021 10:49

Beautiful lazylinguist. We woke up to a sprinkling and it's snowing now. Although none was forecast. I don't think it's cold enough for it to continue to settle

lucysmam · 23/01/2021 10:56

Thanks @tizwozliz, maybe I'm not as slow as I feel then. The little crewmates are taking about 3 hours each, round home school/work/whatever else.

I'm envious of the view from your bedroom lazylinguist, there's nothing pretty to look at round here.

We have snow forecast & had a snow shower earlier but it's stopped now :(

lazylinguist · 23/01/2021 11:04

It's certainly pretty here. But our quantity of pretty views is second only to our quantity of rain, which is not something for which we are often envied Grin . Snow is a welcome change!

Going to set engineer DH on a yarn bowl. Wonder what he'll come up with? Will be good for a laugh if not fit for purpose.

tizwozliz · 23/01/2021 11:30

We attempted to make a yarn bowl from a wooden bowl. It did not go well. I now have a fruit bowl with half a side missing Grin

lazylinguist · 23/01/2021 11:37

Grin Mine was a present. I've seen some beautiful ones at yarn/knitting fairs, some of them wood, some smooth-glazed pottery. Thinking about it, I should have asked FIL to make me a pottery one. He's a retired-engineer-turned-potter, and guitar maker Shock who didn't take well to retirement and has to have a project!

Happy CAL day Grin I resisted the urge to start just after midnight, it was technically Saturday after all Wink
Then slept in late. Teens are great for letting that happen. Starting now though!

lazylinguist · 23/01/2021 12:01

Right. Rolling up my sleeves and taking a (socially distanced) seat next to CrochetBug on the sofa in the virtual craft room studio palace.

Happy CAL day everyone!! I am so nervous! Never read a pattern in my life!! Having some lunch then the afternoon is mine to cock this up as much as I can!!
