Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Beautiful blanket @SeeTheLittleGoblin 😍 can you do a border that hides the ends? Like a rolled one or double sided like this one

SoupDragon · 18/11/2020 08:24

It doesn't actually look that difficult anyway.

It wasn't - some of the instructions didn't make sense until I came to make it as they were worded oddly but anyone who has made amigurumi before shouldn't have any problems working it out.

SoupDragon · 18/11/2020 08:27

I have so many ends to weave in before I can do the border though

I recently made a blanket with lots of colour changes and, at the end of every row, the instructions said "cut yarn and weave in ends" so I did! What a revelation...😂 I got to the end of the blanket and it was all done. I'm not sure if I would remember to do it on another blanket if not told to though.

I have a blanket that is unfinished precisely because of all the ends I still have to weave in. It's been languishing down the back of the sofa for about 3 years.

lazylinguist · 18/11/2020 08:33

Scrapper I've had a look, but I don't quite get it either! I thought the 'wrap-t' instruction looked simple enough, but then when I read the short rows instructions I was a bit baffled. Sorry!

Sorry SoupDragon - another question about the Among Us characters! I notice she made them with light fingering yarn held double. Is that necessary, or would I be ok using slightly thicker yarn held singly? I've never made amigurumi and am expecting I might find it a bit fiddly, so double yarn may not help!

I used Stylecraft Special DK for mine.

SoupDragon · 18/11/2020 08:55

(Singly with a 3.5mm hook)

bumblingbovine49 · 18/11/2020 08:57

I like knitting but I really don't like complex stuff as I keep making mistakes and spend all my time unpicking. Also I am impatient so it is all chunky stuff which doesn't work for me in jumpers (I am too fat) and you can only use so many hats, scarves etc so I never know what to do with what I've made

I've solved this by knitting hats and blanket squares fora South African knit a square charity that gives blankets and warm clothing to South African orphans . I've posted of two sets of 35 squares which is enough for two blankets and around 20 hats over the various lockdown periods
I find it distracts me from eating in the evening which is always a good thing Wink

lazylinguist · 18/11/2020 08:58

Great- thanks. I think I might even have some appropriately coloured dk. Must finish MIL's socks first! The pull of the bew project is always strong though...

I find the same but with booze! I've given it up (not because I had a problem, but because even a small amount seems to seriously mess with my sleep, my digestion and my mood these days). So when dh has a nice glass of red, I console myself with the fact that I get to knit instead- knitting and drinking don't mix well ime!

I've started my among us person with ricorumi yarn and a 3mm hook. Although realise I don't have the colours i want so might start over with dmc petra and a 2mm hook

Anyone got any recommendations for tv shows to crochet along to? I need the TV on in the background but need shows that don't require too much concentration. I once tried to watch The Missing and crochet and I didn't have a clue what was going on.

lazylinguist · 18/11/2020 09:17

Not sure what kind if thing you like, murmurgam, but how about 'Ghosts'? Lovely comedy, suitable for all, I think both series are still on iPlayer.

I was going to use cotton DK and a 2mm hook for my Among Us. Possibly 2.25 or 2.5 depending on how it goes.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 18/11/2020 09:31

Scrapper142 this bit?

^(RS) Change to E; k31, leaving remaining
sts unworked.
Begin Short Row shaping, working across
to last 2 sts, wrp-t for each row until 15
sts remain. ^

If it is, it means that you knit until two stitches are left on the row, then you do a wrap and turn to change the direction - so you're purling back across the stitches you've just knit until there's two stiches left at the other side you started to knit from.

Then you do another wrap and turn and knit back across the stiches you've just purled until you're two stiches away from where you did the first wrap and turn, then wrap and turn again and repeat all this until there's 15 stiches between the wrap and turns at each end.

^Reverse the Short Row shaping by
working across 1 more st each row,
working wraps together with wrapped st,
until all sts are being worked – 31 sts; end
with a WS row.^

Then you want to return to the full amount of stiches so instead of knitting and purling to two stiches before each wrap and turn, you want to go to one stitch after the wrap and turn (so you'll be working the new wrap and turn between the old wrap and turns each time I think).

You need to knit the wrap and the stich you turned together to avoid holes.

That's how I read it anyway, hopefully someone can correct me if I'm talking nonsense!

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 18/11/2020 09:40

Here's a video where you can see the method of that helps, it won't be the same no of stitches as instructed by the pattern but the method is the same

bruffin · 18/11/2020 09:42

@murmurgam
I'm watching Death In Paradise, very easy watching to knit by.

Thanks @MostlyGrannySquares - excellent suggestion there! Means they'll be much easier to hide (176 each bloody side...... Sad)

Annoyingly this is a Christmas present for someone, so I think I'll just have to get weaving sharpish Grin. I'm a bugger for completing the crochet/knitting bit and then just leaving things unfinished because I hate sewing!
bruffin · 18/11/2020 10:09

These are brilliant for weaving in the ends
Also the pony needles with loop for sewing as they are so easy to thread.
The jumper i am knitting has no sewing Grin its knitted in one piece in the round

SeeTheLittleGoblin · 18/11/2020 10:39

Thanks @bruffin - ordered!

Love when things are made in the round, so much easier (apart from counting rows).

Hangingover · 18/11/2020 14:22

Hello!

I'm learning to knit.
Can anyone think why I might keep adding a stitch each row?! I've no idea how I'm managing to do it! Sad

lazylinguist · 18/11/2020 14:34

I remember doing that, Hangingover (or losing a stitch every row) Grin. Are you maybe accidentally bringing the yarn in front of the work sometimes before knitting a stitch, instead of bringing it around the needle from the back? Or are you forgetting where you're up to in a stitch and somehow knitting into the same stitch twice?

OP posts:
bruffin · 18/11/2020 14:59

If its rib , pulling the yarn over the needle.

Crazzzycat · 18/11/2020 15:02

Hangingover I have no idea, but remember doing this all the time when I just started learning to knit. It got better fast though!

NerrSnerr · 18/11/2020 16:05

I have made a start on the X-ray gloves. I do like knitting from a chart.
