Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Awwwh, he's definitely knit worthy!

DS has an ever growing and occasionally bizarre list of things he wants me to knit him. He gets about a third of them Grin

bruffin · 15/11/2020 13:10

Flavin
I was offered money for the Harry Styles and refused . I just asked her to buy the wool and send it to me. It is over !about £1200 to buy from designer in merino.
Think the wool we bought in acrylic was about £60 alone, 6 weeks work in the evenings. I just couldn't put a price on making it, she sent me some flowers and chocolates, but the look on her face in the photos she sent was worth more than money.
Neville was £25 wool and 6 months work, the cardigan is £80 in Warner bros studio

They're lovely "TheEmoji"!

lazylinguist · 15/11/2020 13:16

Awww - TheEmoji, those hats are adorable! And the scarf and capelet are gorgeous.

It wouldn't be worth me knitting stuff to sell tbh. If I priced things according to the time it took me, I'd have to charge hundreds of pounds per sock. Grin

Inspired by giving knitted things, I've just dug out a cable jumper I knitted for myself years ago, which has been sitting unworn because it's a bit too small Sad. I gave it to 15yo dd, whom it now fits perfectly. It's not really her (emo Grin) style, but she likes cosy things!

That's the best kind of gift I think Bruffin you know it's appreciated.

I really started knitting because I couldn't afford to buy the quality of knitwear I wanted.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 15/11/2020 13:27

That is cool lazylinguist! I love LOTR

I don't think I really ever thought about quality of knitwear until I'd started knitting tbh! I'd never been fussed about whether stuff I'd bought and worn was made of natural fibres or not. I went by style and price. It wasn't until I knitted things with quality yarn that I began to realise the difference in weight, warmth and feel.

These are my socks. I'm not the tidiest of knitter but I do enjoy the process.

Ooh lovely purple socks, NerrSnerr. They look plenty tidy to me!

This is my next project for another friend's Christmas present. Going to make the gloves.

OMG my dd would love those! I've never made gloves. I fancy making some if those stranded Nordic mittens though.

Oh God, I feel very beginner looking at your beautiful creations! Blush I completely agree about the price of making, I was thinking the scarf I'm making at the moment would cost in the hundreds if I was getting minimum wage.

What's your favorite yarn? (Although I hate calling it yarn, I prefer calling it wool, like my mum did, even when it's a silk/bamboo mix!) Like you, The emoji, I can't knit with acrylic at all, my hands were in ribbons after the hot water bottle. I'm using sublime baby cashmerino at the moment on addi needles and it's a joy.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 15:03

Lazylinguist that jumper is great.!

Is he a treehugger?!

lazylinguist · 15/11/2020 15:05

My favourite yarn to work with was Debbie Bliss Rialto Aran, I think. Sift and bouncy with a lovely subtle sheen to it. The only time I've used acrylic was when I was learning at the very beginning, and also for my crochet blanket upthread - because I was a new crocheter, didn't know if I'd manage to make it, and it was so big it would have cost a lot in proper wool! I really like it, but since it turned out so well I slightly regret using acrylic now, though it's pretty nice as acrylic yarn goes (Scheepjes brand).

I really like Drops yarn too - I made a simple knitted blanket from their Nepal yarn. Amazingly good value for natural wool, and really soft and dense.

Kind of Grin. Not really, he's a LotR fan and all round sci fi/fantasy fan, like the rest of us in this house. He's spent the weekend decorating the previously boring and cluttered study to make it into a den-of-geek computer and gaming room for himself the dc, with a tardis blue wall and all kinds of Stsr Wars and LotR stuff on display. Can I join? I'd love to join a knit and knatter group (although I'm a crocheter) but here they always ran in the day when I'm in work.

I struggle with big projects because I get bored so I tend to make little things, usually gifts. I've posted pics of some of my makes - they're not very refined but that's ok!

Because of the types of thing I make I mostly Stylecraft DK acrylic yarn. At some point, if I have the time and patience (and an empty to-do list) I want to learn to knit.

I get requests for random things from my family all the time - currently crochet ice creams, and a crochet poo 🙄. I'm happy to make presents for people who appreciate them.

If I could have a homemade gift from a knitter I'd choose a Fair isle cardigan. I'm so jealous of people who have the ability to make them.

Can I join too? I started knitting a throw during the first lockdown, but kind of lost interest along the way. I keep thinking I should pick up my needles again. Either to finish the throw, or start something completely different. I quite fancy a sock project after seeing this thread!

I made these striped socks during the 1st lockdown. They make me happy whenever I look at them ☺️

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 15/11/2020 15:37

I love Drops Nepal and Lima. They're so cosy and soft.

I'm not sure I have a favourite, I love most wooly wools, but don't enjoy slippery ones so much. I'm using Léttlopi for my jacket, it's great to knit with but rather too itchy to wear against skin.

I did a sample knit and got wool in exchange, it had cashmere in it and it's absolutely gorgeous and soft, but doesn't wear well.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 15:40

I never thought of making Xmas cushions. That Christmas tree ones is great!!!

Stripe socks are cool too. Lovely choice of colour.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 15:45

I wanted to knit DS this but he didn’t want it🙁

A crochet poo, CrazyBaubles?! Delightful! Grin Lovely cushions, and I love your crochet Christmas tree!

Speaking of Christmas, I'm also making a knitted paper chain, though I haven't got far with it as I'm busy with the socks. It's so simple though - knit 8 rows of 40 stitches, cast off, sew ends together, repeat (not forgetting to loop the next ring through the previous one before sewing ends together Grin).

Emoji - that jumper is ace,I can't imagine why your ds didn't want it! I'm definitely a bit indiscriminate about knitted stuff - I like daft novelty things as well as beautiful ones.

I've definitely decided that my next big project will be a jumper or cardigan for myself. One that fits this time. Tempted by the Neville Longbottom, but it's a bit scary!

The Neville is on Raveley by Joanne Newsome. The pattern is quite logical, very few lines use all three colours

I used paintbox aran

IslaMann · 15/11/2020 16:23

Hello! May I join in please? I love to crochet, I find it very good for calming my brain. I taught myself when off work with anxiety related stress a few years back. I swear it's kept me sane ever since. I tend to just make blankets as I can always find people to give them too. I can knit too but haven't for ages. Might try some socks though, I love the stripy ones crazzzzycat!

lazylinguist · 15/11/2020 16:26

Thanks bruffin. I've just been having a look at it. It's a very... chattily-written pattern. Grin Just reading about the pockets confused the hell out of me! I've never made pockets. Or button holes! I guess I could do it without pockets....but I like pockets. Hmmm. Still, it's been a while since I've attempted knitting anything out of my comfort zone!
