Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Did anyone get any nice crochet/knitting gifts?

Yes! From my PIL I got a lovely ball of yarn, a digital stitch counter, a crochet hooks case and two sets of stitch markers.

From BIL and SIL I got a book of official Harry Potter knitting patterns! I fancy making these, but they look difficult!

Oh and in other news, I'm pleased with my progress on the Lettlopivest. I feel like I'm getting the tension right (unlike with previoys projects), now that I've started the colour work bit. Here it is, with one of my new stitch markers!

I got this. All the patterns are based on old textiles and have a description of where the pattern came from.

They are certainly not "make whilst watching TV" mittens!

I didn't get any woolly gifts but I did spend £25 on a crochet calendar to get free wool.*

  • disclaimer: It may have been the other way round but I'm not allowed to buy any yarn this year. Ahem... Blush
NiceCardigan · 26/12/2020 11:15

I plan to make these first as the pattern is on a bit that isn’t decreasing.

That book looks fab, NiceCardigan! I have a book about Fairisle and its history, and it's got lots of traditional patterns, and also a section on how to design your own Fairisle motifs based on traditional principles. If my Lettlopivest turns out well (and actually fits!), I might have a go at adapting it with a design of my own!

bruffin - a magnetic knitting necklace Shock. Now there's another thing I didn't know I needed Grin. Thinking about it though... none of my stitch markers are metal.

Ermergherd... those expecto patronum mitts are amazing!!! Harry Potter is my other main obsession in life!

lazylinguist · 26/12/2020 15:27

Harry Potter is my other main obsession in life!

Excellent. Same here. This book has loads of great HP stuff to knit. I also like the Cornish pixie.

And the duelling club mitts, with the motif from the table runner in Lockhart's duelling club in the Chamber of Secrets film.

These are the mittens i was looking at doing

I'm not sure what my next project is going to be, it doesn't look like there'll be other activities on the cards for the next months, so i definitely need something to keep me busy.

I got stitch markers for Christmas which are always useful.

My crochet gifts were well received, every year I think my niece and nephew will be too old for crochet soft toys but it hasn't happened yet and these were specific requests!

lazylinguist · 26/12/2020 17:59

Oh they're absolutely gorgeous, bruffin!

I'm wondering now why I've been a bit reluctant to do colour work on the last few years! I'm really enjoying it on my jumper, even though I'm very slow.

I've just realised - we're not far off needing a new thread. Shock I'm so happy it has carried on bimbling along. Grin

tizwozliz - my problem is that I've always got too many projects in mind! After my jumper, my two main plans are the Harry Potter mittens and something made out of the wool MIL bought me. It's 4 ply and multicoloured (pic posted earlier). I don't want to make socks with it, as I've made so many lately. Maybe a hat? Ooh - or I saw a pattern for some yoga socks... (don't count as proper socks!).

lazylinguist do bought dd that Harry Potter pattern book too! It's gorgeous.

I made a hat last week. It was my first attempt. I did well with the ear flaps but my shaping on the crown was awful. Blush My mum gave me money which I'm "only allowed spend in a wool shop" so im very excited!

CrochetBug · 26/12/2020 18:26

Looks like I need to learn to knit!

My nieces asked me for scarves yesterday. I made them cowl/infinity scarves last year, but the 5 years olds gets caught on her pony tail when she takes it off at school and the 3 year olds is too big. I've got some lovely sparkly rainbow yarn I can use so they should be happy Grin

Slothkin · 26/12/2020 19:04

Thank you so much, my husband loved the presents!

Slothkin · 26/12/2020 19:06

Particularly the fancy crochet hooks, he was saying they’re lovely but he couldn’t justify buying them for himself so I think that was a real win!

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 26/12/2020 20:45

Happy Christmas everyone Xmas Smile

Ah, that’s so lovely Sloth!

Loving the presents everyone got, those duelling mitts are gorgeous. They look a bit like the Star Wars rebel symbol too so bonus geek fun Grin

My DM knitted me a jumper for Christmas and I’ve barely taken it off, it’s so toasty!

petridishmystery · 26/12/2020 21:49

Merry Christmas all! I got a crochet kit which I’m quite excited to have a go on. I also made this infinity scarf for my sister. I initially made her a pocket scarf but the yarn was way too heavy and the pockets looked awful so I started this on the 22nd and got it finished Christmas Eve and she really likes it (or says she does anyway)

Oops a personal pic has snuck in, have reported my post

lazylinguist · 27/12/2020 08:44

Lovely, petridish! So glad your dh liked his presents, Slothkin! I'm pretty chuffed- MIL loves her socks and was praising my knitting to the extended family on Zoom yesterday. She's a pretty accomplished knitter herself, so I was really happy!

Has anyone ever done a knitting course? Either in person or online? My local yarn shop does some, but I saw some on Craftsy (I think) too, and was tempted by the series on correcting mistakes in your knitting- it's something I'm very bad at and get really stressed about!

I'm so happy you all got such lovely knitting/crochet gifts! I only started this year so I didn't receive anything crochet related! My mum has already put orders in though for scarves and hats for her friends for next Christmas Grin
