Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Looking good! I prefer written instructions.

There's a current thread about learning to crochet. It's making me feel sad - there are 2 people on there who have tried and failed for years to learn, to the point they weep in frustration. Sad

Hangingover
Sometimes if you put your needle in the stitch below by mistake and knit that , the proper stitch stays on the needle and looks like the next stitch, so you have ended up making another stitch

murmurgam · 18/11/2020 19:55

Doh, just realised I misread an instruction about 10 rounds ago and only noticed when I started doing the decreases again

Question about using charts - you start at the bottom right and read right to left? Is that right? Then next row, go back to the right and read right to left again, or do you go left to right on the second row? Sorry for stupid question.

Hangingover · 18/11/2020 21:47

bruffin oh dear....I just can't understand Sad I've been googling it too but although the words are all in English I just can't visualise what they mean. It's driving me mad, I seem to add a stitch to every row!

lazylinguist · 18/11/2020 21:47

I think if you're knitting flat, rather than in the round, you start at the bottom and read right to left, but then when you turn your work to knit the next row, you read the next line up from left to right. If you're knitting in the round you read every row from the right, because you're always knitting on the same side of the work, in the same direction.

This is the start of a pair of gloves. It’s a Drops pattern so lve had to make most of it up! Their patterns are impossible to understand.🙄

It’s meant to be in the round but l just cba with the faff of 4 needles. So I’m doing them flat and sewing up the side seams.

And with photo!

Hangingover - are you consistently only adding one stitch every row? If so it seems likely that whatever you're doing wrong, it's likely to be at the very beginning or end of the row (otherwise you'd probably be making the mistake multiple times and adding multiple extra stitches). Make sure that before you start the row, your working yarn is behind the needle you're inserting into the first stitch.

Can I join you?

I started to crochet about 8 or 9 years ago, and having tried and mostly failed at knitting a few times earlier in my life, have made 5 pairs of socks and a jumper this year.

I love that otter a few pages back - wonderful!

lazylinguist · 18/11/2020 21:56

Ooh pretty, TheEmoji! I've never looked at a Drops pattern, though I like their yarn. What's wrong with their instructions?!

Welcome, GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman. Feels a bit rude calling you that! Grin

Everything’s wrong with it!!!

The pattern repeat doesn’t fit the number of stitches. Twice
The number of stitches keeps randomly changing for no reason.

I’m in a big knit group on FB. Drops patterns are legendary. You kind of make it up as you along!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 18/11/2020 22:01

I just hate 4 needles. I find them to faffy and fiddly.

Barmbraic · 18/11/2020 22:03

Oh, I just taught myself four needle knitting last night and it was much easier than I expected Blush

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 18/11/2020 22:04

And the sofa ate one of them anyway.

My sofa is full of digested needles and stitch markers. And it never gives them back. They go into a black sofa hole somewhere.

lazylinguist · 18/11/2020 22:07

OMG I couldn't cope with that. I can't make it up or adapt things. I have to follow everything to the letter. I'm always baffled and impressed when I look at people's project photos on Ravelry and they say "I knitted this pattern but added x,y or z, changed the neckline and knitted it in the round instead of flat like the pattern says" Confused Shock Wtf? It's witchcraft, frankly.

I just hate 4 needles. I find them to faffy and fiddly.

I'm fine with double-pointed needles though - got used to them after knitting so many socks!

My SIL taught me. Without her, I would never have made a single sock.

Just call me Grumpy for short, lazylinguist. It's very suitable when I am swearing at my knitting.

Grin My sofa was showered in broken glass 20 minutes ago. Dh finally got around to changing the 8 lightbulbs in our hanging ceiling light to brighter ones, dropping two of the old ones in the process. Not both at once. He waited until I'd finished clearing one up before dropping the other one. Still, at least I can see my knitting properly for the first time in 6 years. Grin

@WoodbytheRiver would you mind sharing the source for the among us character. My daughter is a big fan. I had a search in ravelry but the patterns were mostly in Spanish!

outofthemoon · 18/11/2020 22:28

Please can I join? I made the fair isle mittens on the other thread that came in for such a bashing, but usually I make socks.
I have just inherited a huge stash of dk wool/acrylic mix. Do you think it will make into socks?

lazylinguist · 18/11/2020 22:32

Ah outofthemoon - I couldn't believe they were dissing your mittens! No reason you can't use the dk for socks, but I think most sock yarn usually has some nylon in it, otherwise the socks aren't robust enough to regularly walk around in. If it's for slouching around the house socks or bedsocks it should be fine.

The one SoupDragon shared upthread was in Spanish too.

I found this among us pattern which is in English. But its not as nice as the one @SoupDragon linked up thread. I have found that the Spanish patterns often are the best ami ones. If you can be bothered to translate them that is .
