Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Mummysworld20 - I clicked on your link but it seems to just take me to a website to buy books. There was then a knitting link, but it was for the Knitting Network shop. AmI missing something?

My nearest yarn shop is 9 miles away but I too tend to order online for choice and convenience. There were wonderful fabric and yarn shops closer, sadly no more.
I enjoy buying hand dyed sock yarn, pricey but beautiful and different.

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 19:25

Aha - obviously more savvy than me, SoupDragon Grin

It's spam.
SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 19:26

I'm always suspicious when someone first post on a thread is a random links (and is, in fact, the only thing they've posted about on MN)

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 19:28

I've reported it. I've never reported anything on MN before!

SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 19:28

I've worn out my report button.

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 19:33

Good on you - doing your bit to keep the boards clear of scum and villainy! I'm a bit oblivious to trolls and spammers I think. I tend to assume everyone's legit. Blush

"The X is "hook through, yarn under, back through, yarn over, back through" ... at least that's all I've done."

I've seen conflicting reports. I know when i've tried the above it there's definitely more diagonal travel of the start of the round than i've seen on photos, but when i've tried hook through, yarn under, back through yarn under, back through it's impossibly tight. Doesn't really matter for the among us characters but I've got a great book of patterns and it really makes a difference on the colour changes.

Two days after joining this thread and I haven’t even picked up my needles. I’ve spent plenty of time on Ravelry though and think I’ve decided my next project will be socks.

I’m looking for something not too crazy difficult, but with enough interest to keep me entertained, but my head keeps getting turned by patterns like this! Hopefully common sense will start to kick in soon 😂

Ooh can I join please? I'm originally a knitter, but picked up crochet a few years ago and much prefer it.

Currently making a Rainbow Through the Storm blanket, it's my November lockdown project and I'm loving it. I have so many ends to weave in before I can do the border though Sad

I'm not having a lot of luck. I've just noticed that there is a different shade in my knitting and just checked dye lots and one ball is different. Its only noticeable in certain light so I'm not undoing it all .

Can I join too?
I started knitting again about 3 years ago after learning as a child a long time ago, I don’t finish much but have made this cushion, a cowl, a jumper and these mitts

Ooh, I love those socks Crazzzycat

I'm really lucky and have one fantastic yarn shop near me and a good one in a nearby town. They sell Drops and Donegal Tweed and John Arbon and lots of other lovely stuff. They've started to sell on their website since the first lockdown in case anyone wants a nosy www.folkloreyarns.com - I don't think it's spam if it's a recommendation...

Wow, that's a lot of ends SeeTheLittleGoblin! I find it much harder to weave in ends in crochet than knitting, they seem to refuse to hide to hide for me. Your blanket looks lovely though so it'll be well worth it!

I've squinted at your picture and can't tell where the shade changes Bruffin I like the pattern!

bruffin · 17/11/2020 23:10

If you look just above the needle it is darker, the bit knitted from just after where the thick rib starts is the different dye lot.

bruffin · 17/11/2020 23:12

This shows it better

Ah, I see it now. It's not obvious though, I had to really look for it.

CoffeethenCrochet · 17/11/2020 23:25

I've found my people!

Learnt to crochet about 3 years ago. My favourite make so far is my Havana blanket, pattern by Tinna Hekl. I used 109 different colours, but still haven't done the border as I can't decide what colour to use.

I'm currently working on a baby blanket for a friend and also taking part in this year's scheepjes CAL but I'm quite a bit behind already.

You need to yarn under on both parts of the stitch to get an X. It also makes a tighter stitch so better for ami. It is fiddly though.

Rather than starting my own thread I'm going to piggy back here for traffic and advice. Help!

So backstory is my Mum knits on her days off, this has ramped up in lock-down, but she's lost inspiration so is just knitting without purpose (endless scarfs to use up wool) . Bad timing means that after tomorrow she has the rest of lock down off as holiday. So 'being helpful' I found this knitting pattern and bought some wool, to give her a 'project' to knit some Christmas stockings. Now I think I've ruined knitting for her.

Anyway, all has started well, but she's hit the heel bit with wrap and turn. Can anyone help? She's really confused by it, and now stressed because she's frustrated she's not getting it. Issue is around the two stiches after the first wrap bit.

ClinkeyMonkey · 18/11/2020 07:21

@bruffin I wouldn't be ripping that back either. The colour difference isn't noticeable unless you know where to look and even then .... So sshhh - I won't tell anyone! Gorgeous colour by the way.

ClinkeyMonkey · 18/11/2020 07:22

@Scrapper142 Would love to help but, as noted upthread, I am cack-handed at socks. But hopefully this will give your question a little bump for the experts!

CrochetBug · 18/11/2020 07:47

Forgot to say, thanks for the link to the Among Us characters @SoupDragon. There are loads on ravelry, but I think they are the nicest.
I've translated a pattern from Spanish before (for Cat Boy? From PJ masks) so hopefully I can manage again Grin. It doesn't actually look that difficult anyway. Hopefully crocheting the characters will act as Among Us rehab as I have an unhealthy attachment to it Hmm

lazylinguist · 18/11/2020 07:49

Crazzzycat - yes, for all my banging on about how much I love making socks, I've not yet attempted anything beyond a ribbed leg and stocking stitch foot! I keep wanting to try something more complicated. Those ones in your picture look fab.

Loving the rainbow blanket, SeeTheLittleGoblin. Weaving ends in is so annoying!

bruffin that colour difference is a pain, though I imagine it's much more visible to you than to us on the photo. I've never given much thought to dye lots - I always assumed there wouldn't really visible difference to the inexpert eye!

Scrapper - I'll have a look at that pattern, but it seems you have to have a login to see it. I expect others on the thread will be more help than me though, if it's tricky. I'm very much an intermediate level knitter!

Thanks everyone
Its only in certain light its noticeable. Last few items I've knitted dye lots didn't really matter so didn't bother checking the order. Lesson learnedSmile
