Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

lazylinguist · 14/11/2020 11:47

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

Ah excellent it's in Spanish! I'm teaching myself Spanish, so it will be good practice. Grin Is it in UK or US crochet terminology though - I don't think it says! Not sure if the designer is Spanish or South American, or indeed which nationalities apart from Brits and Americans use which terminology. Confused

I'd forgotten about the Spanish! I translated it with Google translate and Basic crochet knowledge. I have it saved somewhere.

SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 12:59

My translation came out in US terms (it had single crochet!).

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 13:03

Thank you! I'm pretty sure my Spanish can cope, as long as I know which terminology I'm using. Always good to find a useful purpose for using my languages!

It's only SC with increases/decreases plus some back loop only so it was easy even for me who only did 6 months of Spanish back when Dinosaurs roamed the earth...

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 13:25

I've had to teach myself Spanish, because it's the most popular language in schools these days. Nobody wants a French and German teacher, everyone wants French and Spanish!

@SoupDragon

I think you want something thicker for a chunky scarf. Aran or "chunky". Does the pattern suggest a 4 ply?
Thank you for advice. I am glad I didn't go ahead and buy. I don't have a pattern, but will look for the wool types suggested on here. I am still finding my way with yarns and weights etc. Smile
SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 16:00

I was clueless about yarn weights (and how they relate to hook size!) when I started. A chunky yarn will work up quickly which can be important with something like a scarf as they can end up being so tedious if they go on forever!

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 16:05

I just got an advert on FB for a sleeved scarfy thing which I really like (except that it's all polyester and acrylic). It can be worn in various ways. I'm thinking there must be Ravelry pattern for something similar... this

There are a few if you search for "sleeved scarf"

www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/give-me-a-hygge-scarf

I think they're a bit weird though!

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 17:10

Grin Maybe they are a bit weird. I quite like this one though. www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rust-sweater-scarf

I suspect they are the kind of things (well, like most clothes actually) that look best if you're tall and very slim with modestly-sized boobs. None of which really apply to me, sadly.

Me neither!

Strawberrycreamsundae · 17/11/2020 18:57

May I join?
I have knitted on and off since I was about 6 and crocheting for about 6 years now. I knit socks 17 pairs to date) and generally crochet blankets (on my 9th) but started a jumper for me this afternoon. I’m pretty slow I think!
I have an enormous stash, it’s quite embarrassing really, but I love yarn!
I’m aided and abetted by a wonderful friend.....😊

murmurgam · 17/11/2020 19:06

My niece and nephew would love the the among us keyrings, did you make them up or use a pattern @SoupDragon?

murmurgam · 17/11/2020 19:07

Ah, see you've already answered the pattern question thanks

Pavlova31 · 17/11/2020 19:12

Just about to starting out with knitting so would like to join a knitting thread.
I am starting out with a knit your own scarf pack Smile

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 19:13

I love yarn too, Strawberrycreamsundae. I order most of it online, but it's nice to be able to wander round a good yarn shop (in non-lockdown times).

Does everyone on the thread have decent yarn shops nearby? They don't seem to last long around here unfortunately, and I imagine the pandemic won't have helped. The best one in my local town closed down a few years ago, but there's a newish one (also sewing and crafts) that has an upstairs studio for courses, classes etc.

It looks like the among us by the designer have been used making an x single crochet rather than a v single crochet (yarn under rather than yarn over). I've been trying to do some crochet using an x stitch but can't work out whether it's hook through, yarn under, back through, yarn over, back through or yarn under for both steps or whether it doesn't matter?

Does anyone know?

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 19:14

Ooh Pavlova41 - a total newbie? Welcome! Hope you'll love knitting as much as I do.

SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 19:15

The only local one to me shut down during lockdown. It was a "all fabric crafts" shop so had quilting stuff too but still couldn't survive against online competition. Sad but I am absolutely part of the problem there.

SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 19:18

The X is "hook through, yarn under, back through, yarn over, back through" ... at least that's all I've done.

I just used ordinary SC for these though.

You mean because you generally buy online? Yes, me too. I like being able to look at yarn in the flesh, but it's so much easier to get a wide choice, compare things and take your time dithering over what you want online.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 19:20

Yes, exactly that. I do like to "squidge" yarn but the range is so much better online - a shop just can't compete with that.
