Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

My niece and nephew still request various crochet things, long past the age I thought they'd be interested.

lazylinguist · 16/11/2020 19:07

That is seriously cute. What do you stuff toys with? I've never made one.

👋🏻 I'm a crocheter (littlececrochet on insta if anyone is interested)

I am currently working on a scarf for my dad's birthday. It's supposed to be easy but isn't seeming so at the moment.

lazylinguist · 16/11/2020 20:39

Hi Twizbe - what's the scarf like? I made a tricky one with leaf patterns once. It took me about 5 years because I kept getting frustrated with it and making other things instead!

I use the sort of nylon fibre that is in pillows or cushions, to stuff toys with, @lazylinguist. In the past, when I’ve wanted to buy some without dh seeing the order go through, I’ve just nipped to Asda and bought a cheap pillow.

lazylinguist · 16/11/2020 21:07

Ah ok, thanks SDTG. The only time I ever made a stuffed toy was in needlework lessons ay school. I made a duck and accidentally sewed it to my skirt and had to stay behind and unpick it. Blush I'm not very good at sewing. Grin Can't remember if I ever even got as far as stuffing the damn thing!

I managed to do my first 2 crocheted things the other week. The stalk on the pumpkin is a bit dodgy cos I didn't have brown wool so I had to chop a hair tie up and use that. Both now sit proudly on our Baby's memorial. I'd love to be able to knit but I can't.

It's like a knitted ribbed patter. All the crochets are back loop only which is super fiddly.

I also didn't notice that it was written in American terminology and not British so I was doing the stitches wrong as well 🤦‍♀️

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 07:14

That's lovely, Lozz22. Flowers
Twizbe - that does sound tricky. The U.S./British crochet terminology thing is so annoying!

Lazylinguist, students sew themselves to be stuff all the time. One managed to sew his sweatshirt with him wearing it to the machine🙄. And they always put spools in the wrong way round. I never realised this was actually posssible...

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 08:01

Glad to know it's not just me. Grin I was flirting with the idea of getting a sewing machine and finally learning how to do it properly a while back, but I already don't have time to do as much knitting and crochet as I'd like, so it seemed a bit silly.

@lazylinguist thank you

harribot · 17/11/2020 10:54

Thank you for this thread. I also wanted to join a group, but not to be this year. I am an advanced beginner I think. I love knitting and have grown an alarming collection of yarns. I would like to learn to crochet, but can't seem to get beyond a single chain. The crochet on this thread is amazing, it seems to produce more intricate designs than knitting.

Can I ask for advice please on yarns. is this yarn suitable for a chunky scarf? King Cole Comfort 4 Ply
60% Acrylic 40% nylon 100g 438m 4 Ply

SoupDragon · 17/11/2020 11:40

I think you want something thicker for a chunky scarf. Aran or "chunky". Does the pattern suggest a 4 ply?

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 11:41

Hi harribot - 4ply isn't really a chunky yarn at all - you might want something more bulky.

My most recent finished things are a scarf and a few Among Us characters in different colours (I lost the will to live making one from black yarn and he remains unfinished!)

I'm trying to work through my many unfinished Objects - I can't even call them Works in Progress they've been hibernating so long!

I'm ploughing through the hooking together of a Candy's Hug at the moment. Plus a shawl that Has been hibernating for about 2 years.

CrochetBug · 17/11/2020 11:51

I love the Among Us characters @SoupDragon. I had a vague thought the other night of making some for DC for Christmas.

Barmbraic · 17/11/2020 12:06

SoupDragon that scarf is just beautiful. What pattern is it?

MostlyGrannySquares · 17/11/2020 12:10

May I join? Smile there is so much beautiful work on this thread. I've just finished a Halloween blanket- it was a cal and have just started a Christmas one. As my user name suggests I mostly make granny squares Grin

Harrison the wool i used in the scarf i made is aran weight

lazylinguist · 17/11/2020 12:36

That scarf is stunning, SoupDragon! My dc are obsessed with Among Us - ds has made some of the characters out of polymer clay. He and dd would love some knitted/crocheted ones in their stockings! Are they from a Ravelry pattern?

MostlyGrannySquares - that Halloween blanket is brilliant!

The scarf is on Ravelry www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/duinen
I think it really suits a gradient yarn.

The Among Us people are there too www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/among-us-amigurumi
