Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

My people Grin

I love to crochet. I've only been doing it a few years, maybe 3 properly although I taught myself about 5 years ago. The only problem is I don't find it challenging enough so can get bored quickly. Hence I have eleventy billion WIPs. Grin
My mum wanted some flowers for a scarf and said she didn't understand the pattern she had so asked me. I made one in 5mins and didn't use a pattern. She was rather impressed. To be fair they are really easy Hmm

I want to learn to knit next. I know how to do it just was never any good when I was younger.

I also do cross stitch and embroidery, and make basic stuff on my sewing machine. I might have to join the WI when things reopen.

Here's some hearts I made during lockdown 1.0 to hang in the window.

Wow - sounds like you're a natural, CrochetBug! I love those hearts. They are so perfectly neat and pleasingly chunky! I've never tried making stuffed objects, amigurumi etc, aside from one Fairisle Christmas decoration, which took me ages. I've got a book of patterns for knitted and crocheted leaves, flowers, acorns, berries etc which someone gave me as a present years ago, but I've never got around to trying any. Some holly ones would be good as place setting decorations maybe.

Keen to join. I've self taught myself to crochet via videos etc and have made a few blankets and hats for some upcoming babies due in my friends circle.

Will post photos later.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 16:57

Crochetbug. Try a bit of overlay or a mandala. They can be really challenging! I get bored too. But these can be too hard to get bored of!

Those are some lovely blankets! I don't get bored really- I'm as happy knitting plain things as fancy things once I get started. Plus they're easier to do in front of the tv. I'm more likely to set aside projects that are too difficult than ones which are too easy!

I'm glad you like the cushions - I wasn't sure when I started making them but I think they've come together quite well.
The tinsel-like border for the Christmas tree one isn't to my taste but it's for my mum and she'll love it.

OP you reminded me - I bought a foam wreath ages ago and was supposed to make myself lots of autumn / winter bits to make it up. Completely forgot Blush

Oh and the crochet poo was a request from my 10 year old nephew. He wants to give it to his dad for Christmas 😂

I love the stripy socks, they're so neat! One day I will master knitting and make myself some.

TheEmoji I finished these yesterday, they're a Christmas present for a PacMan mad 4yo (I need to correct the pupils on the ghost, they're too small and annoying me).

Sophies Universe is on my to do list. But I've made myself a promise that I'll finish some of my other blankets before I make a new one. I'm thinking about doing the stool so we can actually use it.

I've seen a pattern somewhere for little Brussel sprouts which I'm going to make for the Christmas table Grin

diplodocusinermine · 15/11/2020 17:12

Soontobe60, the colours in that blanket are perfect, it's lovely.
Emoji, that is beautiful - have you ever done any Janie Crow patterns? A friend of mine did the lily pond and Frida's flowers and I was so impressed - they look like real works of art.

Can I join? I’ve been knitting for years now, and before lockdown, I went to a weekly knitting group, which was my one regular social, activity. I haven’t been since March, and although I have done some knitting (and embroidery) doing lockdown, my motivation is very patchy.

I always knit or crochet a toy for dh’s stocking each year - which has been a bit of a challenge with him working from home - I’ve had to knit like fury every time he went out with the dog, and hide it as soon as he got home - but the Stealth Knitting is done, and dh will be getting an otter this year.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through my woodland ripple blanket.

I really should be finishing some other in progress projects which need to be completed for Christmas but I've got to tricky bits and I needed something mindless instead.

diplodocusinermine · 15/11/2020 17:27

IT'S AN OTTER. OMG. That is wonderful. Did you make the pattern up? Has he got a name?

murmurgam · 15/11/2020 17:27

Love the otter @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

That otter!!!! Fabulous, SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius! I have a definite soft spot for otters. Well, who doesn't?

Nice ripples, murmurgam. I like the colour scheme.
I'm still musing on whether to attempt the Neville cardigan. It would probably take me about 3 years. Grin

CrochetBug · 15/11/2020 17:42

There's some gorgeous things on this thread! The Neville jumper is now on my Ravelry list, I just need to learn to knit Grin
What I'd really like to make is a hat like the one the girl wears in the new Mary Poppins film. Don't suppose anyone has seen a pattern for that?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/11/2020 17:56

@diplodocusinermine

IT'S AN OTTER. OMG. That is wonderful. Did you make the pattern up? Has he got a name?
@diplodocusinermine - thank you! I bought the pattern on revelry. And his name is Harry. Harry Otter. Grin
TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 18:06

Is that Otter a Dotpebbles pattern? He’s lovely

diplodocusinermine · 15/11/2020 18:48

Ahhhhhh, Harry the otter......

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/11/2020 19:16

He’s a Sarah Elizabeth Keller pattern, @TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince. I love your mandala crochet blanket - that looks really complex.

bruffin · 15/11/2020 19:22

I love that otter Grin

Great idea, I started crocheting at the end of February just in time for lockdown I taught myself off you tube and now I have made quite a few different things. I love it and I have far too much yarn

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 15/11/2020 19:51

Yeah far too much yarn... l think we all have that problem!
