Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

@lazylinguist

Yes that's true- it's far easier to undo mistakes in crochet. Unless I'm knitting with biggish needles and chunky yarn, I'm too terrified to just rip back knitting in case I can't pick the stitches up again. Unknitting (tinking) stitch by stitch is the only way that feels safe! And even that's hard if you're undoing decrease stitches etc.
My mum used to knit a lot and the family always used to get together on Wednesdays. Apparently my mum couldn’t fix mistakes like dropped stitches so whenever she did that she had to just put it aside and wait till the next Wednesday when her sister could fix it Grin

I'm not getting anything finished at the moment, but I'm mainly working on my crochet blanket.

Does anyone know where I can find a fairly easy pattern for gloves? Preferably not on double ended needles, but I'll give it a go if needs be. I want to knit a pair for adult dd for Christmas. I used to have a pattern and have knitted her two pairs before, but I can't find it 😭

CrochetBug · 30/11/2020 14:01

Well I said on another crochet thread that I hadn't ever found anything that challenged me crochet wise. I'm lucky and just seemed to "get it" straight away.

I can now say that socks, at least these ones, are my nemesis! I couldnt make head nor tail of the pattern and had to contact the creator for help. Even then I got it wrong and had to frog a whole section Blush

I've made socks before that are done toe up. These are cuff down and completely confused me Grin

NightOwl19 · 30/11/2020 17:04

Could I join please? I've been watching this thread a little. I have never made anything but would really love to try and make a baby blanket, I've watched all sorts of videos on YouTube and they make my head spin abit if I'm honest!

lazylinguist · 30/11/2020 18:00

Of course, NightOwl18! Beginners very welcome. If you're a total beginner, I'd get knitting a practice item like a scarf (or just a rectangle) before starting on a blanket you'll want to keep. Did you have a pattern in mind for the blanket?

Thank you!

I have no idea something simple and in the shape of a square I will be happy with Grin

I made a very simple knitted blanket recently. All one colour and knitted as all one piece, but in alternating squares of knit and purl, kind of like a chess board. Ideal for a beginner. Mine was knitted with the yarn held double, so it would be too big and heavy for a baby. But you could easily make it smaller and with single yarn.

That sounds perfect, do you have a link to the pattern online by any chance?

This is adorable and worked flat then sewn up if you have a suitable recipient nightowl Smile www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tiny-tot-2

It's not a blanket but it's a quicker knit if you're looking for something fun

CrochetBug · 30/11/2020 22:05

Sock number one is done. The second one is going to be pink Grin

I love that, thank you for the link! Any recommendations where I should order stuff from?

Sorry for taking up so much thread space Blush

CrochetBug · 30/11/2020 22:19

@NightOwl19 I usually order my supplies from Wool Warehouse. They are fab.
And if you use the code sc19 then you should get a 10% discount Grin

lazylinguist · 30/11/2020 22:31

I second ordering from Wool Warehouse!

Here is the pattern I used for the blanket. www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hip-to-be-square-blanket

It's so simple you could use pretty much any yarn weight.

OP posts:
lazylinguist · 30/11/2020 22:35

Actually if you click on Projects you can see that lots of people have adapted it to be less chunky by using single yarn,or have used lighter weight yarns. Some have made it as a baby blanket.

I've just cast on and knitted the first couple of rows of my Lettlopi sleeveless jumper. I'm still really nervous about the sizing!

Wool warehouse are great, they're pretty quick at getting orders out. I'd avoid Deramores, they take forever

lazylinguist · 01/12/2020 07:10

I like the drawstring bags Wool Warehouse send the yarn in too - they are useful as project bags.

Love a Wool Warehouse bag! Altho I’m glad they have the option now to not get a bag as I do have quite a lot of them now. They’re definitely my favourite place to order from. They weren’t shipping here when lockdown first started but luckily now they are!
SoupDragon · 01/12/2020 08:21

I send my Wool Warehouse bags on to Woolly Hugs.

lazylinguist · 01/12/2020 08:23

That's a good idea, SoupDragon - I've got enough now, so I could do that in future.

SoupDragon · 01/12/2020 08:29

For the first time ever, I ticked the "no bag" option when ordering wool for a baby blanket. I think I have about 4 to send when I finally finished hooking together the Hug construction kit I've got.

bruffin · 01/12/2020 08:30

One of the companies gives you the option to say you dont want the bags.i tend to order from Lovecraft, Deramores Knitting Network and Wool Warehouse

NightOwl19 · 01/12/2020 11:31

Thank you for the advice! Just got a cuppa and going to look through the wool warehouse website and place an order

Kate105 · 01/12/2020 17:58

Thanks for the Wool Warehouse tip! This is clearly going to take up the rest of my evening and my pay haha!

I make a lot of jumpers so I like New Lanark wool for those - obviously pricey for most things but nice for a proper wool jumper!

I’m buzzing because I’ve just finished another jumper for a colleague in a new record of a month! The silver lining to lockdown I suppose...!

Also I am firmly in the knitting camp! Crochet is sorcery!
