Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

I love him Tiz he is so cute, all the crochet animals on here are super cute. I wish i could crochet, but not in the mindset for that atm.

and really lovely mits Flavia

I have been trying to do 2 coloured brioche/english rib last night/this morning from a Drops pattern called phoenix Ive found the problem is they are continental knitting and i do english. They have a video but the YO , slip one purlwize , then purl 2 together looks so ridiculously complicated and the 2 purl rows keep going wonky. I finally found an english style video and i have now cracked it and am ready to go Grin

I'm the opposite bruffin - never learned to knit as MIL is an excellent knitter so it seemed pointless learning when I could just place an order :-) and there's only so many amigurumi animals and blankets one needs.

MIL not quite so efficient at knitting these days so I'd love to learn but i don't think I have the patience for something new and it would enjoy me that I couldn't do stuff like this straight away.

Ooh, I really really like that hat Bruffin, I've was looking to find brioche hat patterns to practice on before I start a bigger project and I haven't found anything as nice.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 29/11/2020 10:59

You know with YouTube tutorials, you probably could start with something not too far off that Tiz I usually just get stuck in regardless of complete ignorance of what I'm about to attempt to knit and it's worked out ok so far Wink

Hope everyone's been having a nice weekend. I haven't done much knitting, but crocheted another granny square yesterday. We've been kayaking today and I've made pulled pork for dinner, plus two big pots of soup. Feeling a bit wintry!

I'm struggling to get a scarf started. I've walked miles with the dogs today so I need a rest!

NiceCardigan · 29/11/2020 19:13

Feeling wintry here too @lazylinguist we had a long walk and shepherds pie for lunch which may have had a nice glass of red wine with it.

We’ve been trying to sort out the logistics of Christmas. Normally we would see my parents a little bit before Christmas and then MIL and PIL stay with us for the main days. This year it will just be me and DH and the three DCs which will feel strange.

I’m keeping up with the sock knitting progress and am now confident enough in what I’m doing that I can still knit while watching Icelandic dramas with subtitles!

tizwozliz · 29/11/2020 19:31

Completely finished now and ready to fly to Australia.

Not 100% happy with it but it's the best I can do. I've not been able to get the colour changes to look like in the book at all for any of the patterns I've done.

He is very cute.
We went for walk in Hertford today and the local crafters have got together to decorate 40 post boxes in Hertford and Ware

Can I join? I bought some crochet magazine subscription years ago but never managed to get the hang of it - but determined to this winter! I used to knit - made a couple of jumpers - need to return to it!

CrochetBug · 29/11/2020 21:29

Hes lovely @tizwozliz. Colour changes are tricky!

I realised I had 2 balls of sock yarn in my craft cupboard so have started on some socks.

I really need to sort the cupboard out but its such a mammoth task!

Those decorated post boxes are fabulous!

spaceghetto · 29/11/2020 22:02

Which is harder, crotchet or knittting. I really enjoy crotchet but I cant get past the first bit. I can do long lines of nothing but then my wool gets so tight I cant get my hook through!

KNITTING by a mile. It is basically complicated witchcraft.

Can you tell that I am a novice knitter who has spent the evening swearing at a complicated (to me - piss easy according to the kitty denizens of Ravelry) pattern for a scarf?

I find crochet harder, but probably only because I learned knitting first.

Of course! Plenty of people on here to give advice if you get stuck!

100% knitting. I've tried teaching myself both and I think the difference for me is that I can unlock knitting and it's easy to see where I am, whereas picking up stitches in knitting seems impossible.

But then if you ask my mum, she'll tell you crochet is witchcraft and knit you all kinds of complicated stuff in the process. So horses for courses - try both and see what works for you!

BookShark · 30/11/2020 00:08

That'll teach me not to proof read.

Should have said "I can unpick crochet". My whole issue is not being able to do it for knitting!

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 30/11/2020 06:35

Proofreading? Me too.
'Knitty' was autocorrupted to 'kitty', as though Ravelry is overrun by cats.

lazylinguist · 30/11/2020 07:14

Yes that's true- it's far easier to undo mistakes in crochet. Unless I'm knitting with biggish needles and chunky yarn, I'm too terrified to just rip back knitting in case I can't pick the stitches up again. Unknitting (tinking) stitch by stitch is the only way that feels safe! And even that's hard if you're undoing decrease stitches etc.

I'm really enjoying making my granny squares! I have a lovely book of them, which has different suggested designs of how to combine them to make a blanket. It's nice to have an almost endless supply of mini-projects to do between working on bigger ones.
