Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

I must be a glutton for punishment! I found a unicorn pattern by the same lady as the Among Us men. Its even tinier! But DS1 loves unicorns so I'm making him a keyring for Christmas.

@Strawberrycreamsundae - it is lovely and quite easy to get into a rhythm but I would advise stopping regularly to weave in the ends (or tassel them!). That was truly soul destroying doing it all at once!

It is beautiful though, I do plan to make another as this is a gift and I don't want to gift it Grin

Thank you @lazylinguist! That's great. How difficult is it? Im very much a beginner at crochet Blush

I was a beginner too - I'd only ever made a few granny squares before. It's a really good pattern, and there are really clear videos on her website for the slightly trickier stitches. It's fab, because you've learned so many techniques by the end. I don't quite feel like a beginner any more! I posted a pic of mine upthread, I think. It's on my lap right now with my cat on top of it. Grin

Just needs eyes and hair but that can wait. I can only manage so much tiny work before my eyes give up Grin

@Kate105
Beautiful jumper. Love the colours.

NowImmeagain · 27/11/2020 23:46

@lazylinguist the blanket is beautiful - as is your cat!

BookShark · 28/11/2020 00:01

Cats love blankets. Fact. And this one was specifically made as a cat basket liner, but she loves it so much, it's the sure fire way to get her to sit on your knee.

I'm amazed people don't realise accidental yarn purchase is a thing. It's a conspiracy. You go to buy one thing, then they offer free delivery if you spend a bit more, and before you know it...

And yes, I have irritating family who don't get my love for crafts. They're much more about gardening etc. But that requires being outside in the cold, whereas I can crochet with a cat on my knee, the wood burner going and the TV on. I think we all know who's in the right here!

CrochetBug that unicorn is ridiculously cute!
BookShark - I think I'd be more likely to do accidental yarn-buying in an actual shop. Wander in just to have a look... and find myself tempted. Looking forward to them.being open again, although my local one doesn't have a massive range of brands and a lot of them are pretty pricey.

Oh pants. I've run out of one of the colours i need. I thought I'd bought an extra but turns out I bought the wrong shade. Very frustrating. It's only 99p so hardly worth online ordering but don't know anywhere that stocks it even if shops open up on Thursday.

tizwozliz · 28/11/2020 10:03

So advice, please. The last two rows I've done here are in the shade I bought in error as is the yarn on the left. Do I

  1. unpick as far as his t-shirt, use the different shade for the bottom half and hope the shade variation isn't too noticeable - he would still have legs in the original colour.
  2. As above but redo the legs as well, the arms and head remain original shade
  3. Wait to source original shade and then complete

Background - I've had this on the back burner for months, I've redone the head at least three times, it's a Christmas gift.

Is it staying in your house? If not, I would do the entire lower half on the "wrong" shade, including his legs. If it is staying in the house, I think it would annoy me every time I saw him so I would have to source the right shade.

SoupDragon · 28/11/2020 10:47

(He is very cute:))

tizwozliz · 28/11/2020 11:09

He's a gift so won't be staying with me. I'm so over this project and just want it done, so tempted to use the different shade. So many nice projects in this book but I've found them all super frustrating.

SoupDragon · 28/11/2020 12:31

I think re-doing the bottom half on the "wrong" shade is a good compromise between doing it properly and "can't be arsed" then :) I bet no one notices.

I think I have a blanket that uses 2 different dye lots and the difference used to be noticeable if you knew it was there but isn't now (because I've forgotten where it changes!)

All 4 of the circular needles for my Lettlopivest have now arrived (in separate deliveries Hmm) and I'm waiting impatiently for my yarn delivery from Wool Warehouse.
In the meantime I've decided to keep doing the crochet granny squares in between projects until I've got enough for a big blanket. I need to get some more yarn though. I'm pretty sure it was Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino. It's so hard to match colours on a screen to rl ones in front of you! I've just ordered 8 balls, which should keep me going for a while- and it was 20% off with Black Friday!

These are the ones I've done so far (very sporadically over about 3 years!). Please ignore the lack of blocking and weaving in! Blush They are the same size as each other really. Grin

I love that top, Bruffin! It looks like it would be really lovely on. Is it for you?

OP posts:
bruffin · 28/11/2020 16:53

Yes it is for me. It was going to be a jumper but i think the colour and cotton worked better short sleeve. May do it again in wool and long sleeve sometime.
Love the colours of your granny squares

lazylinguist · 28/11/2020 17:20

It looks like a very flattering shape. Just the right amount of drape. And a lovely colour. Did you say where the pattern was from already?

OP posts:
lazylinguist · 28/11/2020 17:43

Oh just looked back and saw it was Drops Cornflower. People were saying how unreliable Drops patterns are - was it ok?

OP posts:
bruffin · 28/11/2020 19:39

It was ok, i did do the biggest size so its loose rather than fitted, think the cotton is heavier so it hangs well.

tizwozliz · 28/11/2020 19:58

Thanks for the advice. I've done the bottom in the new colour and think I can live with it. Not even sure I'll redo the legs.

That's lovely Bruffin it looks so bright and summery.

He's so cute Tiz, my amiguimuri (sp?) always look a bit sinister around the eyes, he looks friendly Smile

I've nearly finished a WIP, one mitt done and 4 rounds of hand ribbing, the thumb and bazillions of ends to weave in on the other.

Lovely mitt, Flavia. Another thing on my list of things I've never made- gloves or mitts of any kind. I keep saying to dd that I'll make her some out of the extra ball of yarn matching the socks I made her.
