Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

I've ordered the sock book which has been mentioned so thanks for the recommendation @lazylinguist - I'm really looking forward to making progress and having lots of warm, comfy socks to wear in a myriad of colours.

CrochetBug · 27/11/2020 13:42

Ordered yarn? No sir. Wasn't me!

Anyway. I needed 2 balls for a custom order. The others made sense so I could get free postage Grin

lazylinguist · 27/11/2020 14:23

Tbh I rarely even buy physical books any more and haven't bought any kind of magazine for a decade - I just use online stuff, Kindle books etc! I mostly just use Ravelry for patterns.

lazylinguist · 27/11/2020 14:24

Come on then, CrochetBug, 'fess up! What did you get? Grin

CrochetBug · 27/11/2020 14:26

Some sock yarn to see if it actually makes better socks than normal yarn. And a range of cotton yarn to make more Among Us characters and a nativity set.
And grey for a hat someone ordered.
I can't complain. I spent £27 and am getting £20 for the hat. Grin

Try checking out your local libraries website sophs29 mine does e magazines and has knitting, sewing and crochet magazines available on the
RBDigital app. I read The Knitter and Simply Knitting on it.

The styling on the Simply Knitting patterns is usually abysmal especially the clearly held at gunpoint men but when you look past that to see the bones of the pattern they're better.

lazylinguist · 27/11/2020 14:34

Nice! I don't know about sock yarn making 'better' socks, but it's certainly suppised to make them wear better.

OP posts:
sophs29 · 27/11/2020 14:36

Oh great! Thank you @FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack I'll have a look!

Yes @lazylinguist I normally just print off patterns but I am partial to the odd free gift in a magazine haha!Grin

BookShark · 27/11/2020 16:54

I also had a yarn buying accident today. I went on the website to buy another ball for my temperature blanket as I've run out of one of the colours. And somehow came away with five balls of yarn (including three Schjeepes (spelling?) whirls, which are NOT cheap), two new crochet hooks and the Sophie's Universe pattern book.

I justified it as being a Christmas present to myself, but I know I'm not going to wrap it up for under the tree as we're at the in-laws and they already think I'm weird for crocheting. Nobody in my circle of friends does it either - I'd to find a local craft group, but even if there was one, I think I'd be too nervous to go! So I'll have to just chat to people about it online instead...

CrochetBug · 27/11/2020 17:10

Yes I meant better lasting socks. Although the couple if pairs I made before either have no 'elasticity' or too much. So they are great if I sit still. They fall down if I actually try and walk in them Grin
It doesn't help that I have massive calves so have to size them up. Obviously forgot about stretch so they didn't work.
Ho hum. We live and learn. I figure the more I make the better I get and eventually I will make my own custom fit pattern. Which I will sell and make my fortune from. Grin

lazylinguist · 27/11/2020 17:47

Shock How dare they?! Grin

Crazzzycat · 27/11/2020 18:16

Yeah, how dare they?! 🥺

I love the idea of accidental yarn purchases. Not related to knitting at all, but I “accidentally” bought myself a lino printing kit today. As if I need any more crafts when I hardly have time for the ones I’m already doing 🙈

I’m hoping to pick up the needles again this weekend after a whole week of doing nothing (again!). This group is helping me to stay motivated!

SoupDragon · 27/11/2020 18:48

Sometimes knitting and crochet mug ones are free with Amazon Prime Reading. Digital' obviously, and best read with the kindle app on a tablet.

lazylinguist · 27/11/2020 18:53

I'm beginning to think I'm quite restrained yarn-purchasing-wise compared to you lot! It's become clear to me that I don't do nearly enough accidental yarn purchasing, on-holiday yarn purchasing (chance would be a fine thing atm!) or buying yarns just because I like them, rather than because I want them for a particular project.

I hereby pledge to change my ways and model my behaviour in future on your profligate yarn habits. Grin

‘Yarn buying accident’🙄😂

I’ve heard it all now! I never have any of these.😇

Barmbraic · 27/11/2020 19:30

If it's any consolation lazylinguist, I didn't buy the yarn in the end. The colour choice was just too big of a dilemma so I'm going to wait until I can go visit in person and buy way more than I will online.

CrochetBug · 27/11/2020 19:48

In my defence m'lud its the only yarn I've bought all year* and I only ordered some because I need it for a customer.

*other than my now extinct crochet subscription box which doesn't count.

Kate105 · 27/11/2020 20:35

Hi everyone just spied this group and I’m so glad I did! You really sound like my kind of people! I’m a self taught hobby knitter and I am very stuck in my ways, I just do the same things over and over because I lack imagination am easily entertained! I like to knit in the round- mostly jumpers and hats but also attempting to branch out into baby clothes for friends. Here’s my most recent make- a jumper for my mother in law. (Side note - she picked the colours! Orange is not my colour haha). Anyway, sorry for the essay but thought I had better introduce myself 😊

Can anyone help? I'd like to crochet thre Attic24 coastal blanket, but I'm not keen on the Stylecraft yarn. Has anyone made this with other yarns? Any suggestions of other reasonably priced yarn bundles that are softer than Stylecraft? I'm working on the Hydrangea blanket at the moment, but some of the yarn is very coarse.

lazylinguist · 27/11/2020 21:30

That jumper is stunning, Kate105! Orange isn't my colour either, but I like it on other people.

NowImmeagain - I haven't made the Attic24 blanket, but I made Coastal Crochet blanket using Scheepjes Colour Crafter DK. It's pretty nice for acrylic, and it's cheap and soft and comes in lots of colours.

NowImmeagain · 27/11/2020 21:33

Lovely, thanks @lazylinguist I'll take a look. Where did you find the pattern for the coastal blanket?

SeeTheLittleGoblin · 27/11/2020 21:41

Finally finished my Rainbow Through the Storm blanket. 40 hours worth of crochet and weaving in all 360 ends Grin. It's single bed sized and I love it!

It's called the seaside stashbuster blanket here . The pattern is available free as a crochet-along on the website as a series of separate posts, or you can buy it as a single pattern on Ravelry.

I love that blanket, SeeTheLittleGoblin!

Love the blanket @SeeTheLittleGoblin

I've realised just how many projects I need to get finished before Christmas. It's probably a blessing that we're in Tier3 and there's not much else to do. Currently working on this

I’ve just started that this evening! It’s lovely isn’t it?
