Knit, Crochet and Natter Thread

I was hoping to join a local rl knit&natter group, and then lockdown happened. Sad But knitting and crochet are keeping me cheerful during lockdown and as the nights are drawing in!

There seem to be quite a few ongoing chat threads on other MN boards, so I wondered if there might be any interest in a rolling knitting and crochet thread, for anyone who fancies chatting about knitting, crochet and life in general of course! Total beginners and scarily experienced needle-wizards and everyone in between, all welcome.

Share your projects, yarn stash confessions, pattern niggles or newbie questions. Not sure if it will fizzle out after a few posts, but hey ho, worth a try!

I've always wanted to make a temperature blanket but I worry it would end up absolutely ginormous. I'm sure there's a clever trick I could use, just need to think of it Grin

lazylinguist · 23/11/2020 10:32

Ginormous blanket? Sounds like a good thing to me! Smile

Oooh I love the paper chains! What a great way to use up odd bits of yarn! 😍

petridishmystery · 23/11/2020 12:38

@lazylinguist

Oh yours is more festively coloured than mine, petridishmystery! I only just got back to mine tonight as I've finally finished my socks. Mine goes with my living room decor but it's not very Christmassy!
Yours is far neater than mine tho! Thanks so much for telling us about it, I want to do some non-festive ones as well.
SoupDragon · 23/11/2020 12:44

I love the idea of paper chains. If only I had a vast quantity of spare yarn to use up...

Helocariad · 23/11/2020 13:44

@TheSunIsStillShining I only just saw your earlier post. 'Magic', love that comment! I'll stick with my double pointed needles I think. Grin

TheSunIsStillShining · 23/11/2020 13:50

:)

I have ordered yarn from 3 places. 2 are xmas present from my mum, but 1 i am waiting on to keep going with a pullover sitting next to me.
You guessed it: the 2 xmas presents have arrived today :)
1 skein 100% grey cashmere, 1 skein orangeish lace mohair (what was I thinking?) and 1 skein blue merion/silk blend.
Ideas on what to do with them?

CrochetBug · 23/11/2020 15:44

Finally finished my Among Us character. I spent too much time playing the game to do any crochet Grin

DS1 wants a whole set of alive and dead ones so he can make stop motion movies Hmm

I've just done some shopping in anticipation of lockdown starting next week again. My stash has rapidly diminished this year.

I also got a ball of lace mohair TheSun so let me know when you work it out Grin I've been thinking of making this www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/broadleaf-2 so I wanted to test mohair in a hat or cowl or something to see if it'll drive me nuts before buying enough to make the whole. I'd rather have the Drops brushed alpaca silk I think but nowhere stocks it locally.

www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/yarn?brand_nav=42172 for anything Drops in the UK

Broadleaf: not my choice of style on me, but it is beautiful. Pls post pics when you get to it.

My yarns are in 3 day quarantine before I start touching them and then I'll wrap them up as a present so my mum can see me through videocall as I open them :) Knowing myself, by then I'll have forgotten what I got.

I'm not an amazing crocheter but can do the basics, and have made some of these soap bags for Christmas presents for people I know who use bar soap.

So you put in the last bits of the soap when it starts falling apart, breaking etc. and can use the bag with soap in as a sponge and it lathers up! As an idea, with a nice bar of Body Shop soap in it Smile

I used a combination of the two patterns below (not my photos!)

That's a clever idea, starkid - I'm a big bar soap fan. I wonder if it would be good for shampoo bars too.

Was cold here today, I'm now prepared for a day at the keyboard tomorrow.

Cozy, tizwozliz!

I think I might have decided what to make for myself. Fits my criteria of a bit if colourwork and it's Aran. I think I might use Drops Nepal - it's one of the suggested yarns.

Oh I like that a lot.

My wrist warmers are made from Drops Nepal, I've no idea what I originally bought it for.

Barmbraic · 23/11/2020 21:26

Anyone know where I can buy cashmere yarn? I was thinking of treating myself. I have some sublime baby cashmerino for a baby cardigan I'm doing after Christmas and it's gorgeous but I think I'd like to try a pair of snuggly socks for myself.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/11/2020 21:30

It’s hideously expensive. I’ve searched high and low.

This is just 25g

My goto shop currently is Tribe yarns. tribeyarns.com Millie, the owner, is bubbly and knowledgeable and generally lovely! :)

Oof, it is expensive. But such gorgeous colours...

I'll have a look at Tribe yarns too.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/11/2020 21:46

Oh God l know. I just want to sort of eat it, stroke it, feel it, and put it somewhere to admire.

I kind of find yarn calming to look at and touch. Is that weird?

Barmbraic · 23/11/2020 22:02

I do too, Emoji. There's something incredibly satisfying about balls of beautiful yarn. And I procrastinate about what to do with them because I worry I won't do them justice Blush

lazylinguist · 23/11/2020 22:24

After sock yarn and the acrylic I used for my crochet blanket, I'm looking forward to using something a bit softer and squishier for my jumper, even if it's not lovely cashmere. I've used Drops Nepal before to make a smaller blanket. It's quite heavy but lovely. I'll have fun choosing colours!

starkid · 23/11/2020 22:28

@lazylinguist - I'm not sure, might be worth a try! I will say putting a whole new bar of soap in to use like I did proved quite hard and solid to rub on me, takes a bit too lather up but then it's fine. Probably better to just use with all the spare little bits of soap but I was too excited to try it out 😂

TheSunIsStillShining · 23/11/2020 22:34

I don't think so :) I have the 3 yarns quarantining in a shelf very near me, so I can see them all day.
The 2nd photo is the pullover in the making that is sadly sitting there waiting for the postman. Still not sure about the color combo...

Off point but Beautiful knitters is close to my office. I discovered them just before lockdown and was going to join their knitting club which was twice a month after work . Really stylish shop and the owner is so helpful and told me about magic loop
